There are many underbanked Americans who struggle to obtain financing due to poor credit or no credit. Credit score is the primary measure used in the United States to determine credit worthiness, however there are many problems with credit score. Credit score may not be an accurate representation of risk and it can be manipulated. In addition, many Americans do not have a credit score. Some companies are beginning to use alternative measures to underwrite, but there are no published studies on using this method for subprime auto loans. Interest in classical music is on a steady decline among Millennials and this paper provides a discourse on some of the prevailing reasonings behind the deterrents to classical music concert attendance. This paper aims to compile past research on the sovereign debt crisis as well as the formation and role of monetary unions, specifically optimal currency areas. It further analyzes the causes as well as possible future consequences for Greece and the European Monetary Union (EMU). It will provide a history of how Greece reached the debt levels it did and the measures taken by the EMU over the past decade. The Effect Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002 On Earnings Quality, Emily B. Blair

The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 on the earnings quality of public firms. I begin by discussing the history of the act and examining its provisions. I then explain the significance of earnings quality and how earnings quality can be measured. After gathering financial statement and earnings quality data, I used SAS to compare quality of earnings before and after 2002. From the results, I concluded that the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 did in fact significantly improve earnings quality.

Ngo Collaboration In Natural Disaster Response Efforts- A Comparative Case Study Of Earthquakes In Asia, Richelle S. Grogg

This paper examines the response of NGOs to natural disasters, specifically in regards to collaboration efforts. The study utilizes a comparative case study methodology of most-similar design to look at three specific disasters- The Kashmir Earthquake, The Sichuan Earthquake, and The Japan Earthquake. Within each of these earthquakes the organizations Doctors Without Borders, the International Red Cross, and Oxfam International’s specific responses will be highlighted. The collaboration efforts will be examined utilizing general questions focusing on willingness to collaborate, commitment, and compatibility of objectives. Ultimately, this study found that all three components seem to be hypotheses worthy of further study.

The Empathy Project: Using A Project-Based Learning Assignment To Increase First-Year College Students’ Comfort With Interdisciplinarity, Micol Hutchison

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Empathy and interdisciplinarity are both concepts that are current and relevant—across professions, in research, and in academia. This paper describes a large, interdisciplinary, project-based assignment, the Empathy Project, which allows students to delve into and increase comfort and skill with interdisciplinary thinking and collaborative learning, while improving the core college skills of written and oral communication, ethical and quantitative reasoning, and critical thinking. As I revised the assignment based on student feedback and results, I found that group conferences and time in class to work collaboratively were beneficial. Additionally, building increased scaffolding into the assignment, including greater student and group …

Business expectations remained strong and consumer confidence stayed weak during April. These findings, based on monthly surveys of both Nebraska households and businesses, show a split assessment of the state economy. In particular, the Consumer Confidence Index – Nebraska (CCI-N) stood at 92.2 in April, little changed from its value of 91.0 in March. However, consumer confidence is well below the value of 100 which would signify neutral confidence. Households report a variety of financial concerns with three in five indicating that their primary financial concerns relate to the cost of living including health care costs, taxes, major expenses (furniture, …

Private school leaders face financial sustainability challenges as competition for students and money increases. This study aims to identify financial metrics which school leaders can use for monitoring and guiding their school’s financial health. IRS Form 990 provided the financial data for calculating predictors of interest. The study evaluated data from 2009–2013 for five groupings of schools, as measured by operational size. The study included 1029 private schools after removing outliers and cases with missing data. Private school leaders helped define the dependent variable as the ratio of total revenue/total expense. International diversification reduces total risk to a portfolio by adding uncorrelated assets and brings higher long-term returns. In this study, the research looks to see if any single country index or continent index consistently outperforms a diversified value-weighted global market index. In order to value-weight the global index, the study uses the International Monetary Fund’s voting shares of each country and equates each voting share to each country or continent’s stake within the value-weighted global market index. This thesis project creates a hypothetical situation in which individuals choose either a thirty-year or fifteen-year fixed-rate mortgage on the same house at the same time and uses historical data to simulate the stock portfolios resulting from investment strategies based on this choice. Both strategies have the same time horizon and total monthly payment, so investors should be indifferent between the two. Using the fifteen-year strategy, the investor pays a higher mortgage payment every month for fifteen years then invests the entire amount of the payment in the stock market monthly for the next fifteen years.
