Empathy, Nonverbal Immediacy, And Salesperson Performance: The Mediating Role Of Adaptive Selling Behavior, Yam Limbu, C Jayachandran, Barry J. Babin, Robin T. Peterson

Department of Marketing Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Purpose: Previous studies that examined the role of empathy and nonverbal immediacy on business-to-business (B2B) salesperson performance is limited in scope and yielded inconclusive evidence. Grounded in Plank and Greene’s (1996) framework of salesperson effectiveness, this paper aims to empirically investigate the mediating role of adaptive selling behavior through which empathy and nonverbal immediacy influence sales force performance and the form of empathy (cognitive or affective) that has the most beneficial role in improving relationship (versus outcome) salesperson performance. Design/methodology/approach: Using cross-sectional data that were collected from 422 pharmaceutical sales representatives, this study used structural equation modeling to test the …

Matching Public Support For Private Product-Innovating R&D: A Theoretical Analysis, Pavlo Buryi, Sajal Lahiri Jun 2016

Matching Public Support For Private Product-Innovating R&D: A Theoretical Analysis, Pavlo Buryi, Sajal Lahiri

Faculty Works

This paper develops a theoretical model of product innovation where research and development (R&D) effort by a monopolist firm is endogenous and its outcome uncertain. The government attempts to aid such efforts with a matching grant. We consider different scenarios depending on whether two parties act simultaneously, act sequentially, or take part in a dynamic cooperative game with a trigger strategy. We also consider cases (i) when the products are exported, (ii) when the firm lobbies for R&D subsidy, and (iii) when the firm is foreign owned. We characterize situations when government intervention increases the chances of product innovation and …

Shrine Pilgrimage (Ziyārat) In Turco-Iranian Cultural Regions, Mehdi Ebadi Jun 2016

Shrine Pilgrimage (Ziyārat) In Turco-Iranian Cultural Regions, Mehdi Ebadi

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Academic studies, dedicated to various aspects of religiously motivated travel have increased steadily, especially in recent years. Despite the huge amount of publications related to tourism and religious pilgrimage, there is still a gap between abstract theory and empirical research. Studies devoted to pilgrimage in the developing countries generally, and Islamic regions in particular are rather few in number in spite of its socio-economic importance and widespread practices. The present work tries to address this relative lack of attention and will shed more light on the tradition of shrine pilgrimage (known as ziyārat) in Turco-Iranian cultural milieu that is almost …

The Relationship Between Religious Tourism And Individual’S Perceptions (A Case Study Of Hazrat Data Ghanj Bakhsh’S Shrine), Ummara Fatima, Sundas Naeem, Farhat Rasool

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Tourism as an industry has become one of the rapidly flourishing sectors in the world economy. It has experienced a continual evolution, and expanding ‎diversification over the last few decades. Religious tourism is one of the ancient types of tourism, i.e. travel entirely and intensely motivated for religious reasons. Specifically talking about Pakistan in business and research circles, religious tourism has recently been accepted as a thriving segment. This paper investigates the relationship between religious tourism and individuals’ perceptions at Hazrat Data Ganj Bakhsh's (HDGB) Shrine. For this empirical study, a survey method, primarily of Likert Scales is used. The …

Self Discovery And Backpackers: A Conceptual Paper About Liminal Experience, Amanda Evangeline Ting, Christian Kahl Jun 2016

Self Discovery And Backpackers: A Conceptual Paper About Liminal Experience, Amanda Evangeline Ting, Christian Kahl

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Little is known about ‘liminoid’, the state of ‘suspension’. However, every backpacker definitely passes through it, to journey from one transitional state of mind, to arrive at the next level of social status; Crossing the threshold between childhood to maturity, peace to war, singlehood to marriage and from being spiritually lost to found. Inspired by Victor Turner’s (1969) significance of the ‘betwixt and between’ level which he named liminal, this paper aims to explore the process of backpackers’ self-discovery by seeking the means of travel through states of cultural rituals, transcendental meditation, adventure and recreational activities. Findings in the literature …

Ritual Journeys In North America: Opening Religious And Ritual Landscapes And Spaces, Daniel H. Olsen Jun 2016

Ritual Journeys In North America: Opening Religious And Ritual Landscapes And Spaces, Daniel H. Olsen

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

The religious landscape of North America is different from other regions of the world in that not only is there a lack of a highly visible religious elements, but also the idea and practice of pilgrimage and ritual travel is not as pervasive as in Europe and Asia. However, there are many human-built and natural spaces marked by Roman Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, Indigenous peoples, and members of other faiths which are subject to either formal or informal pilgrimage-like travel. Visits to these sacred sites have intensified with the rise and expansion of tourism after World War II, conflating pilgrimage-like travel …

Religious Tourism And Italian Sacred Mounts: Experiences Of Networking And Co-Operation At A Unesco Site, Raffaella Afferni, Carla Ferrario

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

A Sacred Mount is a historical holy site and former pilgrimage attraction. It is a devotional complex located on a mountain, and composed of a series of chapels and shrines in which scenes from the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary or the saints are represented through paintings and sculptures. In 2003 the Sacred Mounts of Piedmont and Lombardy were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List being considered as representative of something that can be understood, in part, through visitor interactions with the areas in which they are located (see Di Giovine, 2009:208).

The visitors to Sacred Mounts are: …

Ali, Richard C. Crepeau Jun 2016

Ali, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Looking back on this remarkable life, it seems to me that Muhammad Ali changed nearly everything. He and I are nearly the same age and so our lives ran in parallel paths that seldom crossed but often swept across similar territory. Ali in full public view, a hero and a villain, to different people at different times, he was often both, at one and the same time. Where you sat in time and space and in the American social and political landscape shaped how you viewed this remarkable bellwether of American life.

Consumer Confidence Index – Nebraska And Survey Of Nebraska Business: June 3, 2016, Eric Thompson Jun 2016

Consumer Confidence Index – Nebraska And Survey Of Nebraska Business: June 3, 2016, Eric Thompson

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

Continuing a pattern seen over the last three months, business expectations remained positive and consumer confidence stayed weak in Nebraska during May. These mixed findings are based on monthly surveys of both Nebraska households and businesses. The Consumer Confidence Index – Nebraska (CCI-N) fell back to 89.3 in May, after a reading of 92.2 in April. In both months, consumer confidence is well below the value of 100 which would signify neutral confidence. Households report a variety of financial concerns with 52 percent reporting that their primary financial concerns relate to the cost of living including health care costs, taxes, …

Accounting For Impact: A Path To Innovation Through Csr Reporting, Madison F. Davis Jun 2016

Accounting For Impact: A Path To Innovation Through Csr Reporting, Madison F. Davis

Honors Projects

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Reporting has emerged as a way for companies to communicate emphasis and measures beyond the traditional profit. CSR Reporting has the potential to be used as a tool for companies to move from just compliance with sustainability standards to promote efficiency and innovation. Through case studies of current users, my project explores three reporting platforms and how these platforms can help companies measure this transition to efficiency and innovation rather than using sustainability practices as window-dressing for the reputation company.

Understanding Beef As A Business: A Corporate Social Responsibility Analysis Of Chipotle Mexican Grill, Megan Wilford Jun 2016

Understanding Beef As A Business: A Corporate Social Responsibility Analysis Of Chipotle Mexican Grill, Megan Wilford

Honors Projects

This project is a Corporate Social Responsibility Analysis of Chipotle Mexican Grill that seeks to answer the question: has Chipotle adequately and honestly incorporated Corporate Social Responsibility and stakeholder value creation into their beef sourcing? Industrialized beef production has changed the way we live, making meat more accessible and affordable than ever. In order to provide such a large quantity of beef, sacrifices have been made regarding our health, animal wellbeing, and the environment. Chipotle Mexican Grill claims to source their beef differently, patenting the phrase Food with Integrity. Ultimately, this project will determine whether or not Chipotle provides value …

Essays On Foreign Firms Following Deregistration From U.S. Exchanges, Kathleen Michelle Bakarich Jun 2016

Essays On Foreign Firms Following Deregistration From U.S. Exchanges, Kathleen Michelle Bakarich

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In 2007 the SEC introduced Rule 12h-6, which significantly reduced the requirements for cross-listed firms to leave U.S. markets. While the benefits and costs of cross-listing in the U.S. have been widely analyzed in prior literature, questions as to the impact of deregistration on firms, investors, and other parties have been raised given the increase in foreign firms leaving the U.S. over the past decade. In addition, the growing global adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and worldwide regulatory developments over this time period have brought changes to the home markets to which deregistering firms return potentially influencing the …

Essays On Institutional Investor Trading, Karolina Krystyniak Jun 2016

Essays On Institutional Investor Trading, Karolina Krystyniak

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation consists of three chapters that examine the role of institutional investors in stock market efficiency. Institutions are important and influential market participants. This study aims to analyze whether institutional investor trading is consistent with higher attention and better skill, what is the impact of institutional trading on future asset prices and how does institutional trading relate to the liquidity in the market.

The first chapter of the dissertation analyzes institutional investors’ response to stock level liquidity shocks. I find that institutions, especially the transient ones, buy stocks that experience positive liquidity shocks and sell those that experience negative …

Essays On Investor Attention, Hongqi Liu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation consists of three chapters that examine investor attention and its impact on corporate events and asset prices using a Google search-based measure of investor attention.

Chapter 1 This chapter investigates investor attention patterns and its determinants. I document that investor attention displays strong seasonality. It is significantly lower on Fridays and in summer months. I find that investor attention increases significantly following earnings announcements and macro news releases, and the effect is stronger for large firms. When faced with both firm-specific and market-wide information shocks, investors’ attention response to firm-specific information attenuates and their trading behavior is also …

Both publicly available documents and internal …

The Impact Of Modality Expectancy On Memory Accuracy For Brand Names, Daniel Rubin Jun 2016

The Impact Of Modality Expectancy On Memory Accuracy For Brand Names, Daniel Rubin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

It is proposed that an individual’s expectations regarding the modality by which to-be-remembered brand names will be communicated in the future can impact memory accuracy for those brand names. Specifically, we hypothesize that the likelihood of malapropistic errors (i.e., false recognition of phonetically similar brand names) increases with greater attention to phonemic codes relative to orthographic codes. Attention to these memorial representations is driven by expectations as to whether retrieval will be written or spoken. When visually presented with brand names, those expecting text-based retrieval pay relatively greater attention to the visual forms or orthographies of brand names, as this …

Earnings Management And Bargain Purchase Gains, Yan Yan Jun 2016

Earnings Management And Bargain Purchase Gains, Yan Yan

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation consists of two chapters that investigate earnings management through the recognition of bargain purchase gains in the banking industry and in other industries.

Chapter 1 In business acquisitions where the fair value of net assets acquired exceeds the consideration paid, acquiring firms recognize bargain purchase gains under ASC 805. The determination of the fair value of net assets at date of acquisition gives acquiring management considerable flexibility in judgments. In this chapter, I focus on bargain purchase acquisitions in the banking industry, and find that acquirer utilizes bargain purchase gains to avoid negative earnings and earnings decline. The …
