Consumer confidence and business expectations held near July levels during the month of August. The Consumer Confidence Index – Nebraska (CCI-N) stood at 97.4 during August, slightly below the neutral value of 100, and similar to its value of 97.5 in July. Further, Nebraska businesses maintained a positive outlook during August. In particular, respondents to the August 2016 Survey of Nebraska Business had a positive outlook for both sales and employment over the next six months. Twenty-nine percent of businesses expect sales to rise, while 24 percent expect sales to fall. For employment, 15 percent of businesses expect to increase …

Enterprise Risk Management: The Transformation Of Board-Level Engagement As Evidenced By Disclosure, Timothy L. Baker

Utilizing available information about ERM practices within organizations disclosed by boards of directors in annual proxy statements filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), this study expands the understanding of the value of disclosure of board-level ERM oversight information in proxy statements. The study first creates a board-level ERM engagement index (BODERMX) to identify aspects of board engagement in the ERM efforts disclosed by companies. Development of this index will present opportunities to future researchers to conduct empirical ERM-related research as information about firms’ ERM is costly to obtain. The Alchemy of Creativity utilizes tools sourced from historic ateliers of artists and creators with an eye toward its application for innovation. Refined by the artists collectively attracted to the 20th century film and animation industry, this methodology is about creativity and innovation and thus is both art and science. It has been used to develop innovative attributes in the training of creative people. This process, utilized by the animation industry, is compared with the rigorous six sigma approach to innovation used by many corporations. This methodology was codified by former Disney Animator and arts scholar, Dave Zaboski, who witnessed …

Lean organizations actively seek out waste (time, energy and resources) and inefficiencies in order to maximize value for customers. Every problem acknowledged is an opportunity to improve something for your patrons. Several years ago, South Dakota State University began implementing Lean across campus. Staff at Briggs Library are using Lean principles to improve library processes, both large and small. As part of the library’s strategic plan, every department is responsible for at least two Lean projects per year. The examples presented here illustrate the value of Lean for customers as well as the benefits to the organization.

Offensive trademarks have come to the forefront of trademark policy and practice in recent years. While it was once true that more attention had been paid to Lanham Act section 2(a) in the pages of law reviews than in the courts, recent prominent cases have focused attention on the ban on registration of offensive marks and the widespread impact of this ban on trademark owners.

Currently more than 46 million people are living with dementia globally (ADI, 2015). The World Health Organization (WHO) reports the worldwide population of persons 60 years of age and older will more than triple between 2000 and 2050 to two billion. The concept of Western patients receiving long-term dementia care in foreign countries is a new and emerging phenomenon (Gray, 2013; Pomareda, 2014; Wegerer, 2014). This study examines the visual images within Alzheimer’s care facility websites (n=105) and uses a cross cultural comparison lens to contrast differences in patient representations and treatment facilities. Slandering of a firm’s products by competing firms poses significant threats to the victim firm. The resulting damage can be as large as the one from a product-harm crisis. Unlike a true product-harm crisis, the disparagement is based on a false claim, thus we call it a pseudo-product-harm crisis. Using a pseudo-product-harm crisis event that involves two competing firms, this research examines how consumer sentiments evolve surrounding the crisis. Our analyses show that while both firms suffer, the damage is severer to the offending firm (which causes the crisis) than to the victim firm (which suffers from the false claim) …

This study aimed to develop an understanding of how a scenario planning process could be used to assist businesses to adapt to climate change. The focus of this study was on the Icelandic fishing industry since Iceland is experiencing firsthand climate change impacts. Mitigation strategies are the main focus in climate change research, but this study focused on a possible adaptation method that requires changing management practices in order to reduce the impact of climate change on the economy. This report outlines what is currently known about workplace mediation: its benefits, styles and strategies, its expected outcomes and training challenges. It also identifies an urgent requirement for Irish research in light of the increased promotion of mediation at state level in Ireland. It outlines some international experiences of the difficulties faced in balancing high quality accreditation and regulation with innovation and growth.

The paper examines the relationship between farm animal welfare, industrial farm animal production, and human health consequences. The data suggest that when the animal welfare of land-based farm animals is compromised, there are resulting significant negative human health consequences due to environmental degradation, the use of non-therapeutic levels of antibiotics for growth promotion, and the consequences of intensification. This paper accepts that even if meat and fish consumption is reduced, meat and fish will be part of the diet of the future. A survey of private practice veterinarians in the Chicago area was conducted in an effort to pinpoint what constitutes a positive relationship between a veterinarian and a rescue group or shelter. The following research questions guided this project: From the perspective of veterinarians, what is the nature of collaboration between private veterinarians and animal rescues? What are the reasons for these relationships? What is the perceived value of these relationships according to veterinarians? The survey was sent to 50 private practice veterinarians in the Chicago area and received twelve responses, followed by two face-to-face interviews of survey participants. The data …

Ceo Power, Corporate Social Responsibility, And Firm Value: A Test Of Agency Theory, Zhichuan Li

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore whether firms with powerful chief executive officers (CEOs) tend to invest (more) in corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities as the over-investment hypothesis based on classical agency theory predicts.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper tests an alternative hypothesis that if CSR investment is indeed an agency cost like the over-investment hypothesis suggests, then those activities may destroy firm value.

Findings

Using CEO pay slice (Bebchuk et al., 2011), CEO tenure, and CEO duality to measure CEO power, the authors show that CEO power is negatively correlated with firm’s choice to engage in CSR …

We develop a temporal and spatial partial equilibrium model to evaluate the welfare impact of new technology on the apple industry to control fire blight. We show significant benefits of GM technology relative to conventional methods and other new methods such as microencapsulation of biological agents. We also show that the cost-reduction benefits of the technology exceed the yield-increasing benefits.
