Reports

The HR@Moore Survey of Chief HR Officers probed 143 CHROs regarding their strategies for building the C-suite talent pipeline. CHROs reported that they place the greatest importance on practices aimed at developing this talent, followed by those focused on retaining this talent. Specifically, firms provide individuals in the C-suite talent pipeline with significant access to the senior leadership of the firm, so that these individuals can begin to understand C-suite roles and so firm leaders can assess individuals in the talent pipeline. CHROs also emphasize using stretch assignments/job rotation and special projects as means of both developing broader skills/perspectives and …

The Value Of External Hires: Effects Of External Versus Internal Ceo Successors On Firm Performance Over Time, Donald J. Schepker, Youngsang Kim, Pankaj Patel, Michael Campion, Sherry Thatcher

Reports

Managing the talent pipeline is a critical risk area for organizations in today’s business environment. Chief Human Resource Officers are particularly concerned with ensuring the organization has a deep talent bench to replace executives who depart or retire. Both internal and external hires are likely to bring significant benefits to the organization. The most important consideration, however, should be a focus on the capabilities needed in the role for which an individual is to be hired.

Enabling Self-Service Bi Through A Dimensional Model Management Warehouse, Karen Corral, David Schuff, Gregory Schymik, Robert St. Louis

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The promise of Self-Service Business Intelligence (BI) is its ability to give business users access to selection, analysis, and reporting tools without requiring intervention from IT. However, while some progress has been made through tools such as SAS Enterprise Miner, IBM SPSS Modeler, and RapidMiner, analytical modeling remains firmly in the domain of IT departments and data scientists. The development of tools that mitigate the need for modeling expertise remains the “missing link” in selfservice BI, but prior attempts at developing modeling languages for nontechnical audiences have gone largely unadopted. This paper seeks to address this unmet need, bringing model-building …

A Newsvendor Approach To Compliance And Production Under Cap And Trade Emissions Regulation, Andrew S. Manikas, James R. Kroes

IT and Supply Chain Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Since the 1990s, governmental agencies have increasingly turned to market based cap and trade programs to control the emission of pollutants. Firms subject to cap and trade regulation are typically required to acquire emissions allowances via open auction markets. The cost to acquire allowances may impose a substantial financial burden on a firm. While emissions reduction efforts may eliminate some firm's need to acquire additional allowances, there are still numerous firms that need to purchase additional allowances on the open market. This study presents a new forward buying heuristic, designed for those firms that need to purchase emissions allowances via …

The Influence Of Exploration On External Corporate Venturing Activity, Varkey K. Titus Jr., Jenny M. House, Jeffrey G. Covin

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

We utilize the exploration/exploitation framework to examine how a firm’s engagement in exploration influences its portfolio of external corporate venturing (ECV) activities. Three forms of equity-based ECV are considered: corporate venture capital investments, joint ventures, and acquisitions. The organizational learning literature is used to investigate how a firm’s engagement in exploration influences its usage of acquisitions relative to its overall portfolio of ECV activities. The investing firm’s industry technological dynamism is posited as a moderator of the relationship between exploration and the relative usage of acquisitions. Utilizing a sample of 1,326 firm-year observations between 1996 and 2008, we find that …

Quality Management And Innovation: New Insights On A Structural Contingency Framework, Dara Schniederjans, Marc Schniederjans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

With increasing market competition, organizations are striving for greater innovation in products and services. Quality management has the potential to invigorate an organization’s product, process and administrative innovation when strategically aligned with internal contingencies. Moreover, this paper empirically assesses contingency factors including organization size, task and managerial ethics which play roles in moderating the relationship between quality management and innovation. Based on an empirical study we find social quality management practices, not technical quality management practices, are positively associated with innovation. We also find a …

Racial Differences In Job Attribute Preferences: The Role Of Ethnic Identity And Self-Efficacy, Jakari N. Griffith, Gwendolyn M. Combs

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Using a sample of 149 white and 190 black business students, the authors examined racial differences in job attribute preferences. Results of this study indicate there were significant racial differences in 19 of 21 job attributes examined, with black students placing greater importance on job attributes than white students. Investigation of the mechanisms contributing to this difference reveals that the relationship between race and job attribute preferences was mediated by ethnic identity. Furthermore, the relationship between ethnic identity and job attributes was moderated by personal efficacy, with higher self-efficacy levels leading to greater importance placed on job attributes.

Resource Planning In Engineering Services Firms, Vincent Hargaden, Jennifer K. Ryan

Department of Supply Chain Management and Analytics: Faculty Publications

We develop a model to enable engineering professional services firms to improve the management of their competitive resources, i.e., skilled engineers, to be better able to respond to customer demand. The model was informed by semistructured interviews with senior executives from engineering, information technology (IT) services and technical consulting firms. As a result, we capture many of the complexities associated with the resource planning process in the professional engineering services sector. In the resulting model, the key attributes of supply, demand, and operations constraints are identified. Based on information obtained from the interviews, a number of test firms are created. We …

Ranking Small Business Resistance Criteria Toward The Affordable Care Act, Rakesh M K Gupta

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Such interpretations intensified the skepticism and concerns of small business enterprise (SBE) owners. The purpose of this study was to develop a representative, prioritized list of SBE owners' concerns or resistance factors. The goal was to create a useful guide for SBE owners who are seeking ways to reducing the adverse financial impact of the law. With social choice theory as the theoretical framework, 50 randomly selected SBE owners across 5 distinct …

Tax Compliance: Ethical Orientation, Risk Perception And The Role Of The Tax Preparer, Ashley Beckett Soliz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a voluntary tax system, taxpayers have an opportunity to avoid or evade paying taxes. The reasons for and the causes of noncompliance are expansive. One way to increase revenue to the government without increasing taxes is to focus on deterring tax evasion and tax underreporting. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects on tax compliance of the taxpayer’s ethical orientation and perceived financial risk, as well as the role of the tax preparer in the compliance decision. This research adds to the current tax compliance literature by investigating (in an experimental setting) the role of the …

How Does The Audit Report's Structure Affect Nonprofessional Investors' Attention To Its Content?, Brian Matthew Goodson Jan 2015

How Does The Audit Report's Structure Affect Nonprofessional Investors' Attention To Its Content?, Brian Matthew Goodson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study experimentally examines whether and how two potential changes to the audit report’s structure affect the extent to which nonprofessional investors attend to the report’s content when evaluating a potential investment, and whether the potential effects differ across levels of investor sophistication. Specifically, I examine the impact of descriptive paragraph headings and the relative location of the opinion paragraph on judgments of financial statement reliability and investment decisions. Results indicate that when the audit report includes descriptive paragraph headings, less sophisticated investors perceive the report to be more readable, which, in turn, leads them to attribute higher levels of …
