Ethics Of Tax Evasion, The Case Of Albania, Emirjeta Kandri, Agim Mamuti

UBT International Conference

Tax evasion and the ethics about it are widely discussed topics nowadays and they have revived a lot of debates among ethics analysts or government representatives and business mangers or owners. The first ones argue that it is unethical hiding revenues to avoid taxes, since they are one of the ways business owners contribute to their proper countries in order for the society of that country to benefit from those. On the other hand, businessmen argue that they already pay too much tax and do philanthropic donations, so there is no reason for them to feel they should pay more …

An Empirical Investigation On The Public-Private Sector Wage Gap In Albania, Esmerelda Shehaj Nov 2015

An Empirical Investigation On The Public-Private Sector Wage Gap In Albania, Esmerelda Shehaj

UBT International Conference

This study aims to empirically investigate the public-private wage differentials in Albania. The public/private pay differential in these countries is certainly an interesting issue to study given that the country has undergone in-depth restructuring of the economy, which requires understanding in particular the role of the public and private sector. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt in empirically investigating the factors determining the public-private wage gap in the country. Using nationally representative data from the Albanian Living Standard Measurement Survey 2012, the double selection methodology in Heitmueller (2006) is employed in order to model the …

Rethinking Innovation - Contextual Factors Impact, Manuela Mece, Entela Lako Nov 2015

Rethinking Innovation - Contextual Factors Impact, Manuela Mece, Entela Lako

UBT International Conference

In the past 2 decades a keen interest in innovation is demonstrated by governments (financial instruments for R&D) or intergovernmental agencies (EU financial instruments) because of its connection to regional economic advantage. In Albania, understandings of innovation is predominantly technological and product driven and defined in general terms such that the nature of innovation is disclosed of its contextual influence. Following the above logic innovation is assumed to be overly masculine. Through combined analysis of interview material from previous studies on the engendering of entrepreneurship based in Albania, this paper challenges current conceptualizations of innovation geographically and in a gender …

Estimating Quarter To Quarter Economic Growth In Kosovo, Ledjon Shahini, Bernard Dosti, Perseta Grabova

UBT International Conference

Estimation of economic growth in real time is one of the main objectives for most of the policymakers. At this point Gross Domestic Production at quarterly frequencies is the most accurate indicator. Most of the countries that have developed this macroeconomic indicator are publishing GDP in two main forms, seasonal and not seasonal adjusted. Seasonality is a present phenomenon for most of the economic sectors at quarterly frequencies. These different rhythms caused by weather, human habits, legislation, and so on, tend to repeat themselves periodically. It is therefore natural to try to estimate their impact and take account of them …

The analysis is carried out using micro-data from the National Employment Service and the Labour Force Survey conducted by the Albanian Institute of Statistics. Because It Makes Me Feel Good: Moderation And Mediation Effects In Cause-Related Marketing, Reto Felix, Arash H. Zadeh, Arne Baruca

WCBT Faculty Publications

Based on a 2x2 factorial design, advertisements for a consumer product generated higher purchase intentions when a cause-related marketing (CRM) message was present than when no such message was included in the ad. This effect was statistically significant, regardless of the type of the product (luxury versus non-luxury). However, for the specific cause used in this study (fight against breast cancer), gender moderated the relationship between the presence/absence of a cause in the ad and purchase intentions. Further, in order to shed more light on the underlying process of cause related marketing messages, two alternative mediation hypotheses were tested using …

Responsible Accounting For Stakeholders, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Joyce Van Der Van Der Laan Smith Nov 2015

Responsible Accounting For Stakeholders, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Joyce Van Der Van Der Laan Smith

Accounting Faculty Publications

Through a critique of existing financial theory underlying current accounting practices, and reapplication of this theory to a broad group of stakeholders, this paper lays a normative foundation for a revised perspective on the responsibility of the public accounting profession. Specifically, we argue that the profession should embrace the development of standards for reporting information important to a broader group of stakeholders than just investors and creditors. The FASB has recently moved in the opposite direction. Nonetheless, an institution around accounting for stakeholders continues to grow, backed by a groundswell of support from many sources. Based on institutional theory, we …

The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin Nov 2015

The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

It is fitting to think of the half-life of new media using the time-based metaphor of radioactive decay. As a metaphor, an object’s half-life can be a useful way to talk about the potent technological modernity of new media and, like Walter Benjamin’s well-known notion of the aura, call attention to an object’s performativity. However, Benjamin’s aura remains a constant reminder of irrevocable originality whereas remarking on half-life references a quality that changes over time. But what happens after the rhetorical impact of being new has run its course? What is the life expectancy of once-new media and what of …

Purchased Goodwill And Its Accounting Treatment, Terence Sheridan Nov 2015

Purchased Goodwill And Its Accounting Treatment, Terence Sheridan

The ITB Journal

When a company decides to purchase another company or enterprise, the consideration paid will, in many cases, exceed the total of the separate valuation of each of the assets and liabilities of the company or enterprise being purchased. The extent of the premium paid is sometimes dependent on the growth potential of the company in question. In other cases, the premium is linked to the possibilities for cost-cutting when synergies between the existing and new companies are exploited. Occasionally, the fact that a company has an established reputation or an established customer base will result in a considerable premium being …

Are Travel Purchases More Satisfactory Than Nontravel Experiential Purchases And Material Purchases? An Exploratory Study, Galia Fuchs, Po-Ju Chen, Abraham Pizam Nov 2015

Are Travel Purchases More Satisfactory Than Nontravel Experiential Purchases And Material Purchases? An Exploratory Study, Galia Fuchs, Po-Ju Chen, Abraham Pizam

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Satisfaction derived from purchases can affect one's happiness and quality of life. Previous studies illustrated that this effect is not equal across purchase categories. Specifically, experiential purchases were found to bring more satisfaction and happiness to consumers than material purchases. However, these comparison studies treated a variety of experiential purchases as one homogeneous category regardless of their nature of consumption. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to bridge this gap and to assess the difference in the level of satisfaction among the three purchase categories: material, travel (composite event experiential purchases), and nontravel experiential purchases (single event experiential purchases). …

Cognitive Reflection And The Diligent Worker: An Experimental Study Of Millennials, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hernán-González, Ricardo Mateo

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

Recent studies have shown that despite crucially needing the creative talent of millennials (people born after 1980) organizations have been reluctant to hire young workers because of their supposed lack of diligence. We propose to help resolve this dilemma by studying the determinants of task performance and shirking behaviors of millennials in a laboratory work environment. We find that cognitive ability is a good predictor of task performance in line with previous literature. In contrast with previous research, personality traits do not consistently predict either task performance or shirking behaviors. Shirking behaviors, as measured by the time participants spent browsing …
