Meet Barbara Sylvester. Originally from Bradenton, Florida, Sylvester joined ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy in August 2013. She currently works in the college's Department of Pharmacy Practice (DPP). Previously, Sylvester worked in the college's Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Her background includes 30 years in banking and public school accounting. Since joining ETSU, Barbara has earned LEAD certification and passed the Certified Administrative Professional exam.

Meet alum Dr. Chase Ballinger (’14), from Chattanooga, Tennessee, who serves as an Air Force Commander over Pharmacy, Lab, Radiology, and Immunizations departments, where he manages over thirty people across those sections. In this role, he serves as a health care administrator while also having the opportunity to work within the pharmacy and interact with patients and active-duty members. Ashana Puri, PhD, is the newest faculty member in Pharmaceutical Sciences. Originally from Chandigarh, India, sherecently completed her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutics at Mercer University and worked on transdermal drug formulations with the well-known scientist, Dr. Ajay Banga. She also has experience working on research projects with cosmetic companies, L’Oreal and NuFace.Ashanaearned a MS degree in Pharmaceutics and a BS in Pharmacy at Panjab University, India. She worked as a research intern and associate scientist at Teva Pharmaceuticals in West Chester, Pennsylvania, before joining ETSU.

JOHNSON CITY Students in East Tennessee State Universitys Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy will have the opportunity to earn a bachelors degree while studying for the doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree starting this fall.

The Gatton Colleges new bachelor of science degree in pharmacy studies the first in the state of Tennessee was approved this summer by the Tennessee Board of Regents.

Gatton is among the vast majority 121 of 129 of pharmacy schools in the country that do not require a bachelors degree for admission, according to data from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy.

JOHNSON CITY The Generation Rx (GenRx) chapter at East Tennessee State Universitys Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy recently brought home a national award for its efforts related to prescription drug abuse.

The student organization, which aims to enhance medication safety and combat the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs through educational programs, was named the best overall GenRx chapter in the country during the American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists conference held late last month.

JOHNSON CITY A new team of collaborators at East Tennessee State University has received a grant to study the possible connection between genetic traits and side effects of a drug used to treat HIV.

Right now, there are more than one million people diagnosed with HIV in the United States, said Dr. Sam Harirforoosh, associate professor at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at ETSU and principal investigator for the project. Currently, there are 25 medications available to treat HIV and a number of combinations of those drugs.

JOHNSON CITY The student chapter of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University recently was awarded a high honor from the NCPA Foundation.

The group earned first-runner up for 2015 NCPA Student Chapter of the Year. The award recognizes commitment to community service, recruiting new members, promoting independent community pharmacy and advocating legislative action.

This article examines the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in advancing international criminal justice. I argue that NGOs have had considerable impact by contributing, among other things, to the global struggle against impunity through advocacy for the creation of more robust institutional mechanisms to prosecute those who perpetrate such crimes. Wellness tourism as a subsector is differentiated in terms of the pursuit and enhancement of wellbeing. Wellness itself is defined as holistic wellbeing and optimal psychological states. Enhanced wellbeing is cited as the motivation and outcome of travel and in terms of dedicated infrastructure, services, and amenities at destinations. Yet enhanced wellbeing following a wellness vacation is typically assumed rather than assessed. While tourism studies have focused on wellbeing as the outcome of leisure travel, a theoretical framework that might be adapted to assess wellbeing following a stay at a wellness facility was not apparent. ETSU Professor, Dr. Steven Wallace, gave a presentation on the fossil history of tapirs at the Nashville Zoo. The presentation was part of the Zoo’s 3^rd Annual Party for the Planet Celebration and was open to the public. During the talk Wallace highlighted the Gray Fossil Site and the importance of its fossil tapirs for helping save living tapirs. In their last studio at ETSU, senior design students just presented their projects on how design can address a social issue.  This semester long project included research papers, multiple presentations using various types of delivery methods (Skype, PowerPoint and large presentation boards – shown).  All during the semester they worked with regional professional mentors who works with them each week.  Topics included deafness, obesity, urban farming, and domestic abuse.

2015 Design is much, much More Than Decorating

All designers spend a very small portion of their time selecting finishes and working with color but a vast majority of their time is spent doing so many other important things that relates to the safety and their clients. In their Building Systems course students learn about fire and life safety codes, fire separation, compartmentalization, smoke/heat detectors, pull stations, exit illumination, water flow, and many others.

The Senior Health Care Studio toured Johnston Memorial Health in Abingdon, VA. to learn about the functions within their facilities.  Students will be making design modifications to several locations within the facility based on a new branding program and the hospitals needs following a post-occupancy evaluation.  Before starting the project students tried to navigate the ETSU campus in a wheelchair to bring awareness to design issues facing the wheelchair bound.  After completing these activities students took time for a time for brainstorming before returning to the classroom to begin their designs.

Following the contraction in demand for law firms’ services during the Great Recession, “Big Law” was widely diagnosed as suffering from several maladies that would spell its ultimate demise, including excessive fees, excessive size, increased competition from in-house counsel, the commoditization of legal work, and the decline in demand for “relationship firms.” While each of these market pressures is only too real for certain segments of the law-firm population, their threat to the most elite U.S. law firms has been largely misunderstood. The Supreme Court has looked to the rights of corporate shareholders in determining the rights of union members and non-members to control political spending, and vice versa. The Court sometimes assumes that if shareholders disapprove of corporate political expression, they can easily sell their shares or exercise control over corporate spending. This assumption is mistaken. Because of how capital is saved and invested, most individual shareholders cannot obtain full information about corporate political activities, even after the fact, nor can they prevent their savings from being used to speak in ways with which they disagree.
