The Relationship Between Accounting Processes And Interpersonal Trust Within Organizations, Jace B. Garrett Jan 2015

The Relationship Between Accounting Processes And Interpersonal Trust Within Organizations, Jace B. Garrett

2015

Trust is an increasingly critical determinant of organizational success. This dissertation consists of three studies investigating the relationship between firms’ accounting processes and interpersonal trust. Using survey data from Great Place to Work® Institute, the first study investigates the association between trust (i.e., employees’ trust in management) and three aspects of financial reporting: accruals quality, misstatements, and internal control quality. Results suggest that trust is associated with better financial reporting quality. However, these effects are not uniform across companies. Consistent with trust improving financial reporting quality through improved information production and information sharing, results suggest that trust is significantly associated …

Effects Of Extension Services On The Technical Efficiency Of Rice Farmers In Albay, 2014-2015, Bm Bathan

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

Through the Farmers Information and Technology Services (FITS) program, extension services in the form of trainings and seminars, and education and communication materials were provided to rice farmers in Albay. Using farm-level input-output data covering the wet season of 2014 and the socio-economic and farm-specific characteristics of randomly sampled 30 farmer beneficiaries and 30 non-beneficiaries, a stochastic production function and technical inefficiency model were estimated. Results of the study reveal that beneficiaries have higher input utilization, yield and technical efficiency than non-beneficiaries. Furthermore, the amount of seed and fertilizer significantly and positively affects the yield of rice. In addition, the …

Ryanair Holdings, Nicole Blake Tran, Jamie Perkinson, Caron Sinnenberg, Lionel Tarcia, Jeffrey S. Harrison

Robins Case Network

The crass Irish CEO of Ryanair presides over a modern miracle. Ryanair, with its ridiculously low prices and poor reputation for service, has become one of Europe’s largest and most successful airlines. Employees pay for their own training, flights are cancelled if they won’t be full enough to be profitable, and the concept of “no frills” is heartily embraced. However, some new competitors have come on the scene, and Ryanair may be forced to improve its service and reputation to keep up.

Economic Impacts Of Smallholder Oil Palm (Elaeis Guineensis Jacq.) Plantations On Peatlands In Indonesia, Roberto F. Ranola Jr., Asa Jose Sajise

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

Oil palm smallholders on peatlands have contributed significantly to economic development in rural areas by augmenting income and reducing poverty. However, these plantations also cause adverse environmental impacts such as carbon emission, haze and peat fires, deforestation, water supply disruption and biodiversity loss. The objective of the study is to determine the economic impacts of developing smallholder oil palm plantations on peatlands in Siak District Riau Province, Indonesia. Cochran sampling technique was employed to select the respondents. Cost benefit analysis was used to determine the economic impacts of the smallholder oil palm plantations. Results reveal that the development of 94,726 …

Inquiry Into The Conceptual Dimensions Of Project Portfolio Management, Pedro Bruno De Souza, Jorge Carneiro, Rodrigo Bandeira De Mello Jan 2015

Inquiry Into The Conceptual Dimensions Of Project Portfolio Management, Pedro Bruno De Souza, Jorge Carneiro, Rodrigo Bandeira De Mello

Strategy and Operations Faculty Publications

Although much has been written about how to manage individual projects, there is still little guidance on how to evaluate the “quality” of project portfolio management itself, that is, the degree of “accomplishment” of the process by which the project portfolio is formed and run. This study addresses this gap by employing a qualitative approach to uncover managerial perceptions about what is encompassed by project portfolio management and how the this construct should be evaluated. By building from a review of the scant literature on project portfolio management, conversations with expert scholars on project management, interpretations provided by managers, and …

Disruptive Technology As Antecedent To Ceo Pay-Performance Sensitivity, Rebecca Abraham, Judith Harris, Joel Auerbach Jan 2015

Disruptive Technology As Antecedent To Ceo Pay-Performance Sensitivity, Rebecca Abraham, Judith Harris, Joel Auerbach

HCBE Faculty Articles

This study examines the influence of disruptive technology on firm performance, which in turn explains CEO compensation. Innovation consists of a series of S-curves which progress from introduction to growth, maturity and decline until they are replaced by new technology which has its own S curve. Each S curve involves the introduction of products that are cheaper, simpler, smaller and more convenient than established technology by catering to specific market needs currently unserved by existing technology. Disruptive technology is a special case of innovation characterized by its ability to displace a mainstream competitor, while innovation displaces ex- isting technology. This …

Consumption Patterns Of The Millenial Generational Cohort, Rebecca Abraham, Charlie W. Harrington Jan 2015

Consumption Patterns Of The Millenial Generational Cohort, Rebecca Abraham, Charlie W. Harrington

HCBE Faculty Articles

This study constructs a consumption profile for the Generation Y age cohort using responses to the Consumer Expenditure Survey furnished by the Bureau of Labor Statistics from the financial crisis period. This generation was theorized to employ both economic reasons, i.e. preferences for inexpensive products, and the desire to comply with the values and normative beliefs of social referent groups. For the rent or buy a home decision, the variability of income, risk of foreclosure and loss of mobility governed the consumption choice. For the purchase a new car or a used car decision, economic considerations dominated with variability of …

HCBE Faculty Articles

The financial collapse of many prominent institutions over the past six years has highlighted the importance of morality and ethics in the workplace. Recent evidence has demonstrated that ethics is an important topic for all working adults and students who will soon join the workforce. As such, using the personal business ethics scores (PBES) survey, this study tests 164 students' demographic profiles and ‘ethical exposure' in Saudi Arabia. Using factor analysis, analysis of variance, and regression analysis with the sample data, this study highlights a statistically significant relationship between legal knowledge and ethical maturity among Arabs in this research. Other …

Adoption Factors Impacting Human Resource Analytics Among Human Resource Professionals, Roslyn Vargas Jan 2015

Adoption Factors Impacting Human Resource Analytics Among Human Resource Professionals, Roslyn Vargas

HCBE Theses and Dissertations

In today’s fast paced, ever-changing world, one cannot help hearing the terms Big Data and analytics. The Internet holds vast amounts of data and this data, for example in retail, is being used to predict shopping habits, current needs, trends, and more. Why should this be limited to the retail side of an organization? Today, there is a more significant push for Human Resource (HR) professionals to be strategic business partners, and, therefore, HR professionals need to work on leading, not lagging, in the area of measurements and analytics. Some organizations that have adopted the use of analytics in their …

"A Kiss Is But A Kiss": Cultural Mores, Ethical Relativism, And Sexual Harassment Liability, Frank J. Cavico, Bahaudin G. Mujtaba, Maria Petrescu, Stephen C. Muffler

HCBE Faculty Articles

Sexual harassment legal liability has been one of the momentous legal outcomes of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. This seminal civil rights law in Title VII governing employment expressly prohibits discrimination based on sex (that is, gender). Two areas the courts have defined as sexual harassment have been quid pro quo (meaning “this for that”) and hostile working environment. Quid pro quo claims take the form of “broken promises”, “favors”, or “threats” promised by male superiors to female subordinates in exchange for sexual favors or relationships. Hostile environment means any hostile, offensive, or intimidating action or environmental factor that would …

Selection Of Inflatable Bounce Houses Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Janice Bowen, Rebecca Uboldi Jan 2015

Selection Of Inflatable Bounce Houses Using Data Envelopment Analysis, Janice Bowen, Rebecca Uboldi

Undergraduate Review

The decision to purchase one consumer product over another is becoming more challenging as the choices that are made available to consumers have increased. This research studies the decision making process when consumers purchase an inflatable bounce house. In addition to cost, a variety of features such as structure size, weight capacity, weight of product, customer ratings, and the number of customer ratings must be compared. It is difficult to make a direct comparison of each of these individual features through traditional methods. As a result, Data Envelopment Analysis is used to compare the outputs and inputs to determine which …

The Effects Of Facial Cues On Consumer Judgment And Decision-Making, Fan Liu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the roles of facial cues in consumer behavior. Specifically, the research examines the effect of facial structural resemblance, facial expressions, and other perceptual cues—in both individual and group settings—on consumer judgment and decision-making. Essay 1 examines the influence of facial resemblance on consumers* product purchase likelihood. This effect is moderated by consumers* mental construal, such that the effect of increased facial resemblance on product purchase likelihood occurs among consumers with high-level construals but not among those with low-level construals. Results of three experimental studies show that increased facial resemblance among team members enhances the perceived entitativity of …

Findings – The authors found five thematic categories of realignment strategies: promotional, organizational, price, operational, and product …

The Capacity For Mobilization In Project-Based Cultural Work: A Case Of The Video Game Industry, Marie-Josee Legault, Johanna Weststar Jan 2015

The Capacity For Mobilization In Project-Based Cultural Work: A Case Of The Video Game Industry, Marie-Josee Legault, Johanna Weststar

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

Though dissatisfied with some management practices and working conditions, like most high-tech knowledge workers, videogame developers remain reluctant towards unionization. This article examines the factors of collective action among developers as an example, using data gathered from an international survey and interviews. We conclude that developers meet some conditions conducive to collective action but face many obstacles as well, both to collective action and to unionization proper. This does not lead us to share the belief of a decline in collective action, but rather raises the issue of conflating union action and collective action. Our study reveals how unsuited the …

Work Hour Congruence: The Effect On Job Satisfaction And Absenteeism, Bryon Y. Lee, Jing Wang, Johanna Weststar

Management and Organizational Studies Publications

This study examines the effect of work hour congruence on employee job satisfaction and absenteeism using a large, longitudinal sample from the Canadian Workplace and Employee Survey (WES). An employee is said to have work hour congruence when they actually work the number of hours that they desire. Results indicate a difference between employees who desire more hours and those who desire fewer hours: employee desire for and receipt of more hours was related to positive changes in job satisfaction, while employee desire for and receipt of fewer hours was related to reduced absenteeism. In addition, the results suggest that …

Gilles Deleuze: Contribution Aux Sciences De L'Organisation (Gilles Deleuze: Contribution To Organization Science), Jean-Philippe Vergne Jan 2015

Gilles Deleuze: Contribution Aux Sciences De L'Organisation (Gilles Deleuze: Contribution To Organization Science), Jean-Philippe Vergne

Business Publications

Motivations For Corporate Political Activity, Adam Fremeth, Brian Kelleher Richter, Brandon Schaufele Jan 2015

Motivations For Corporate Political Activity, Adam Fremeth, Brian Kelleher Richter, Brandon Schaufele

Business Publications

Campaign contributions are typically seen as a strategic investment for firms; recent empirical evidence, however, has shown few connections between firms’ contributions and regulatory or performance improvements, prompting researchers to explore agency-based explanations for corporate politics. By studying intrafirm campaign contributions of CEOs and political action committees (PACs), we investigate two hypotheses related to public politics and demonstrate that strategic and agency-based motivations may hold simultaneously. Exploiting transaction-level data, with over 6.8 million observations, we show that (i) when PACs give to specific candidates, executives give to the same candidates, especially those who are strategically important to the firm; and …

Failing To Meet Analysts' Expectations: How Financial Markets Contribute To Corporate Short-Termism, Mark R. Desjardine, Tima Bansal Jan 2015

Failing To Meet Analysts' Expectations: How Financial Markets Contribute To Corporate Short-Termism, Mark R. Desjardine, Tima Bansal

Business Publications

Recent research has shown that earnings pressure from financial analysts and investors encourage managers to make decisions that over-prioritize short-term profits relative to long-term value. According to this body of research, these pressures cause managers to shorten their time horizons, focusing their attention in the present and ignoring the long run implications of their decisions. However, many competing studies have shown that managers are often short term even when investors are not, and analysts and investors reward firms that make long-term investments. The equivocal findings may arise because the relationship between financial market pressures and managerial behaviors is distal. We …
