Business Leadership Education: A Virtual Storytellers Exercise, Maria Mendez, Yue Cai Hillon, Khadija Al Arkoubi

Management Faculty Publications

Online courses are becoming popular in business education and require creative strategies to maintain students’ engagement and facilitate contextual and complex understanding of class concepts and theories. In this paper, we are proposing an exercise for online undergraduate Organizational Behavior courses to motivate students and enhance their understanding of class concepts through the use of storytelling. In this exercise, students work in teams to narrate stories that describe with rich detail different concepts and theories pertaining to team management in general and virtual team management in particular. The results suggest that students develop a higher level of critical thinking in …

What Do Institutional Investors Know And Act On Before Almost Everyone Else: Evidence From Corporate Bankruptcies, Elena Precourt, Henry Oppenheimer Jan 2015

What Do Institutional Investors Know And Act On Before Almost Everyone Else: Evidence From Corporate Bankruptcies, Elena Precourt, Henry Oppenheimer

Accounting Department Faculty Journal Articles

We analyze investment behavior of institutional managers who hold and trade shares of firms that file for bankruptcy. We find that during the five-year period preceding a bankruptcy filing, institutional investors (except those managing investment companies) are net buyers with a positive abnormal net number of shares traded during the period. Institutional managers start to sell shares of bankrupt firms sooner in some firms than in others; these earlier sales are of smaller firms with weaker operating performance, and lower equity risk. We do not find evidence that institutional stockholders trade strategically and avoid material price declines before they occur.

The Medical Tourism Index: Scale Development And Validation, Marc Fetscherin, Renee-Marie Stephano

Faculty Publications

Medical tourism is an estimated $100 billion dollar industry. Despite the increasing number of people, companies and countries involved in medical tourism, we know very little about the key drivers and how countries are perceived as medical tourism destinations. The purpose of this paper is to present the Medical Tourism Index, a new type of country-based performance measure to assess the attractiveness of a country as a medical tourist destination. We followed a rigorous multi-steps scale development procedure by using four empirical studies based on 4995 respondents. The MTI is a multidimensional construct with 4 dimensions (country, tourism, medical costs, …

Are There Whiter Shades Of Pale In Marketing The Ivory Tower? An Examination Of Differentiation In Institutional Public Service Announcements Through Content Analysis, Elizabeth Anne Wolfe

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This study explored the public service announcements (PSAs) produced by institutions of higher education that competed in the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s 2013-14 postseason football bowl games. Utilizing content analysis and survey results, the researcher examined the level of content distinction between and within institutional groups based on athletic conference, Carnegie classification, total student enrollment, and primary target audience. The researcher also investigated the role the PSAs played in marketing campaigns conducted by the institutions and the additional marketing strategies used in those campaigns. The analysis showed limited distinction between institutional groups and little to no distinction within groups. Further, …

Information Systems Strategy And The Role Of Chief Information Officers: Strategizing And Aligning Practices, Anna Karpovsky Jan 2015

Information Systems Strategy And The Role Of Chief Information Officers: Strategizing And Aligning Practices, Anna Karpovsky

2015

Information Systems (IS) pose both a challenge and an opportunity for organizations. The topic of strategizing around IS issues is thus of considerable importance. While there has been substantial academic research relating to the strategic value of IS – over 50 years – much of it focuses on such aspects of the topic as strategic IS planning, strategic alignment, and IS for competitive advantage. Fewer studies have taken into account the emergent nature of strategy formation. Fewer still have given attention to strategy-making practitioners, in particular their role and influence in the strategizing process. Accordingly, the goal of this dissertation …

Management Faculty Research

This essay discusses the requirements for the long-term acceptance of virtual currency as a financial medium of exchange by examination of fundamental criteria associated with the historical development of common tender and selected virtual currencies. The relatively recent appearance of Internet-based transactions have necessitated developing virtual forms of payment such as virtual currencies. According to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (“FinCEN”) of the United States Treasury,5 virtual currencies are subject to regulation if that virtual currency has a substitutive purpose for facilitating the exchange of goods and services. Although governments can place stipulations on currencies, users of common tender, including …

This realization is reflected in the 2011-13 Report by AACSB Task Force on Globalization of Management Education (The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business - International, June 2011-13). The AACSB report highlights broad globalization trends in management education that have drawn the attention of institutions, corporations and business schools alike, that are striving to prepare their key stakeholders (managers and students) to face today’s complex global challenges. Department of Management: Faculty Publications

The successful diffusion of innovations in rapidly changing supply chain technological environments is essential to support operations and supply chain management functions. In this paper we conceptualize and develop a framework for research into the diffusion of innovations in organizations pertaining to software adoption in supply chain management. Incorporating Task-Technology Fit theory with a network externalities model, we develop a novel approach in customer relations management (CRM) software adoption. An empirical study using Partial Least Squares (PLS) on data from US supply chain managers is utilized to confirm the usability of the proposed framework as well as confirming the efficacy …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: February 20, 2015, Eric Thompson, William Walstad Jan 2015

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: February 20, 2015, Eric Thompson, William Walstad

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) rose by 0.40% during January 2015. The increase in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, suggests that economic growth will accelerate in mid-2015. Three of six components of the leading economic indicator rose during January. Respondents to the Survey of Nebraska Business were optimistic. Respondents predicted a strong increase in sales and employment over the next six months. There also was a decline in initial claims for unemployment insurance, which suggests strength in the labor market. Building permits also edged up on a seasonally adjusted …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: October 16, 2015, Eric Thompson, William Walstad

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) fell by 0.13% in September 2015. The decline in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, is the first in the last six months. The decline suggests that economic growth will be modest in Nebraska in the first quarter of 2016. The LEI-N fell because of a decline in manufacturing hours and an increase in initial claims for unemployment insurance during September. There also was an increase in the value of the U.S. dollar during the month, which creates a challenge for exporters, particularly in agriculture …
