Volatility And Risk Management In European Electricity Futures Markets, Jim Hanly, Lucia Morales May 2015

Volatility And Risk Management In European Electricity Futures Markets, Jim Hanly, Lucia Morales

Articles

This paper estimates and applies a risk management strategy for electricity spot exposures using futures hedging. We apply our approach to three of the most actively traded European electricity markets, Nordpool, APXUK and Phelix. We compare both optimal hedging strategies and the hedging effectiveness of these markets for two hedging horizons, weekly and monthly using both Variance and Value at Risk (VaR). We find significant differences in both the Optimal Hedge Ratios (OHR’s) and the hedging effectiveness of the different electricity markets. Better performance is found for the Nordpool market while the poorest performer in hedging terms is Phelix. However …

School Of Hospitality & Tourism Management Research Strategy For Information Technology 2015-2017, Patrick Horan

Other resources

The aim of this document is to introduce a research strategy for the area of Information Technology for the School of Hospitality & Tourism Management DIT. The proposed strategy for 2015-2017 is all about exploration and foundation for strategies to come. To date there has been no strategy in place within the School which focuses specifically on research in the area of Information Technology. Therefore, we are beginning with a blank canvas so to speak. This, in itself , is both a drawback and a huge opportunity. We have an opportunity to shape the IT research activity of the School …

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between And Among Power, Trust And Job Satisfaction Of Nurse Managers In Acute Care Hospitals Using Rogers Science Of Unitary Human Beings, Maureen A. Schneider May 2015

An Investigation Of The Relationships Between And Among Power, Trust And Job Satisfaction Of Nurse Managers In Acute Care Hospitals Using Rogers Science Of Unitary Human Beings, Maureen A. Schneider

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Background: Defined as control and freedom, power is often characterized as hierarchical. Power-as-freedom exists as a unitary manifestation of the whole and is acausal. Thus a worldview that emphasizes mutual process rather than a causal (control) view supports a culture of trust in the healthcare environment that generates a committed and a thriving work force. When nurse leaders support a climate of trust, managers develop a sense of commitment to the organization which may lead to job satisfaction. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence supporting the relationship between power, trust and job satisfaction among nurse managers.

Purpose: The …

Storytelling In Art Museums, Hayley P. Trinkoff May 2015

Storytelling In Art Museums, Hayley P. Trinkoff

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Storytelling, in the context of art museums, is a method of communicating the qualities and attributes of art through a story. It helps the visitor bring the work of art to life and understand something the eye cannot see, a compelling narrative. It is important for visitors to discuss art and share stories on tours and through virtual media. We learn and form our own meanings from stories. These interactions will help build more relationships within communities. It is the museum’s job to take visitors on a journey and introduce them to new objects and perspectives.

This thesis addresses what …

The Early Identification of At-Risk Students in an Undergraduate Marketing Metrics Course

Abstract

This research describes the development of a diagnostic tool to permit the early identification of at-risk students in an undergraduate marketing metrics course. Using multiple discriminant analysis, students were classified into performance categories by drawing on a set of predictor variables conceptually linked to student performance in math-based courses. The discriminant model included math ability, perceived self-efficacy, math anxiety and overconfidence as potential discriminators of student performance. The model successfully identifies at-risk students at three times the chance probability. The early identification of at-risk students is a …

Teaching Customer Orientation To Millennials By Utilizing Electronic Communication Between Students And Firms, Thomas M. Hickman, Michael M. Pearson May 2015

Teaching Customer Orientation To Millennials By Utilizing Electronic Communication Between Students And Firms, Thomas M. Hickman, Michael M. Pearson

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This article describes an experiential method for teaching customer orientation by directing students to use their own experience with a business to write either an e-mail letter of praise or complaint to that business. Students complete a survey that asks them to rate businesses on customer orientation measures at the time they send the e-mail and, again, at the end of the semester after having had time to receive a response. Results of the surveys are analyzed and recommendations are given for conducting an interactive discussion that allows students to see the variability of the firms’ commitment to customer orientation.

An Analysis Of Perceptual Gaps Among Chamber Management, Chamber Member Contacts, And A Proxy Sample Of Chamber Member Employees: An Attempt To Improve Marketing Efficacy, Paul J. Costanzo, Janelle E. Goodnight May 2015

An Analysis Of Perceptual Gaps Among Chamber Management, Chamber Member Contacts, And A Proxy Sample Of Chamber Member Employees: An Attempt To Improve Marketing Efficacy, Paul J. Costanzo, Janelle E. Goodnight

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Decreases in membership for a local chamber of commerce led the authors to conduct research to assist them in determining why they have been experiencing difficulty with business organization memberships within the last few years. This paper presents findings from an exploratory study that examined perceptual gaps on a series of factors that the authors believe when identified, may lead to improved marketing efficacy. Chamber management, chamber member contacts, and a proxy sample of chamber member employees for a local chamber of commerce completed surveys to assess the level of consistency among their perceptions of value added benefits of chamber …

A Modified Framework Of Service Encounter Types For The Application Of Relationship Marketing In Services, Gary D. Futrell May 2015

A Modified Framework Of Service Encounter Types For The Application Of Relationship Marketing In Services, Gary D. Futrell

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Many firms believe that the best way to inculcate loyalty and retain customers is to establish connections with them through relationship marketing. Unfortunately, only about half of the firms surveyed in a recent study indicated any level of success with it. The significant attention directed toward service classification suggests legitimate differences among service types that may moderate the effectiveness of relationship marketing efforts. This paper proposes a typology of service interactions that takes into account three critical dimensions of relationship marketing: anticipated future interaction, channel of interaction, and customer involvement. Corresponding propositions are offered to guide further research.

Negotiating Stances Used With Minority Suppliers: A Research Note, Alicia D. Cooper Ph.D., Rodney L. Stump Ph.D. May 2015

Negotiating Stances Used With Minority Suppliers: A Research Note, Alicia D. Cooper Ph.D., Rodney L. Stump Ph.D.

Atlantic Marketing Journal

While new ways of organizing exchange have become prominent in business-to-business markets, the function of corporate minority supplier purchasing programs in this changing organizational environment has received scant attention. Specifically, the extent to which the present structure of minority supplier purchasing programs enhances -- or deters -- the creation of strategic partnerships, impacts the way buyers and suppliers interact, and ultimately determines the efficacy of these exchange relationships has not been sufficiently addressed in the literature. The present study examines the relationship between the minority supplier categorization (versus those not classified as such) and the negotiation stances that purchasing agents …

Does Thin Always Sell? The Moderating Role Of Thin Ideal Internalization On Advertising Effectiveness, James A. Roberts, Chloe' A. Roberts May 2015

Does Thin Always Sell? The Moderating Role Of Thin Ideal Internalization On Advertising Effectiveness, James A. Roberts, Chloe' A. Roberts

Atlantic Marketing Journal

Much of the current focus on the use of ultra-thin models in fashion magazines can be attributed to Madison Avenue which still operates under a “Thin Sells” ethos. Research to date, however, has provided equivocal evidence of the efficacy of thin models in advertising (Yu 2014). The present study’s two related objectives include: (1) determining whether model size has an impact on advertising effectiveness, and (2) if internalization of the thin ideal moderates this relationship. Study results suggest model size in fashion advertisements has no main effect on advertising effectiveness. Additionally, thin ideal internalization moderates the model size – advertising …

Patriarchy, Empire, And Ping Pong Shows: The Political Economy Of Sex Tourism In Thailand, Kristen Kelley May 2015

Patriarchy, Empire, And Ping Pong Shows: The Political Economy Of Sex Tourism In Thailand, Kristen Kelley

Cultural Studies Capstone Papers

This project provides a postcolonial feminist analysis of the prosperity and reputation of the sex tourism industry in Thailand. It examines the ways in which Western imperialism created the space for the globalization of sex work, as well as providing a postcolonial analysis of the hegemonic structures which have existed throughout Thailand's history that enable the sex tourism industry to thrive today. This project also explores how policy making and enforcement in Thailand affects the sex tourism industry, as well as the ways in which activism works to change or support these policies, and how this affects individuals who are …

Estimating The Short-Run Supply Curve Of Higher Education, Carter Davis, Taylor Nadauld May 2015

Estimating The Short-Run Supply Curve Of Higher Education, Carter Davis, Taylor Nadauld

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The original project that I set out to research with this ORCA grant was to investigate how the real estate bubble spread leading up to the financial crisis, using an incredible 90 gigabyte dataset of mortgage information. Two unfortunate events occurred during the course of this project: the external hard drive that stored the data was lost and a programming error on my part destroyed the data on the BYU supercomputer. Dr. Nadauld and I were devastated. Instead of investigating how bubbles spread, I set out to estimate the slope of the supply curve of higher education. Dr. Nadauld and …

Micro-Enterprise Education: The Academy For Creating Enterprise, Barry West, Gibb Dyer May 2015

Micro-Enterprise Education: The Academy For Creating Enterprise, Barry West, Gibb Dyer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In developing countries throughout the world, one often-used approach to alleviating poverty has been to encourage entrepreneurship among the poor. Micro-credit is a highly popular solution to encourage the poor to launch new enterprises, but has somewhat mixed results (Field et al., 2013; Banjeree et al., 2009; Karlan and Zinman, 2011; Kaboski and Townsend, 2011). Current literature suggests that simply giving loans to those who start businesses out of necessity is not the best approach to encourage entrepreneurial success. These writers argue that these “necessity entrepreneurs” need education in the form of business knowledge and tools to help them succeed …

Remote Worker Characteristics: The Positive Relationship Of Intrinsic Motivation In Remote Worker Productivity, Josefina Martinez-Amador May 2015

Remote Worker Characteristics: The Positive Relationship Of Intrinsic Motivation In Remote Worker Productivity, Josefina Martinez-Amador

Student Scholarship

Recent research predicts that by 2016, 47% of the workforce will perform work from a remote location. This study contributes new knowledge to remote workforce management by hypothesizing that personality traits (intrinsic motivation, grit, and impression management) and job engagement have direct positive and significant relationships with employee productivity. To address this gap, we conducted a quantitative study of 300 employees (remote and non remote) who are currently actively employed by different kind of companies. Three major findings emerged from our study. First, our research demonstrates that intrinsic motivation to work remotely is a critical characteristic for remote workers to …

Smartphones: A Game Changer For Psychological Research, Wei Wang, Jibo He May 2015

Smartphones: A Game Changer For Psychological Research, Wei Wang, Jibo He

Publications and Research

As technology continues to advance and smartphones continue to grow in popularity, we argue that smartphones have rapidly evolved as a suitable tool for psychological research. In this editorial, we will first briefly introduce the technological and social features possessed by smartphones that are ideal for psychology research. Then we distinguish two approaches to use smartphones for research, highlighting the external and internal validity of each approach. We further discuss computer skills and analysis methods needed for research with smartphones.

Essays On Risk Measurement And Fund Separation, Fang Liu May 2015

Essays On Risk Measurement And Fund Separation, Fang Liu

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Chapter 1 extends Cass and Stiglitz's analysis of preference-based mutual fund separation. We show that high degrees of fund separation can be constructed by adding inverse marginal utility functions exhibiting lower degrees of separation. However, this method does not allow us to find all utility functions satisfying fund separation. In general, we do not know how to write the primal utility functions in these models in closed form, but we can do so in the special case of SAHARA utility defined by Chen et al. and for a new class of GOBI preferences introduced here. We show that there is …

Three Essays In Accounting Regulation And Debt Contract Characteristics, Bryan Graden May 2015

Three Essays In Accounting Regulation And Debt Contract Characteristics, Bryan Graden

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of three essays relating to accounting regulation and debt contracting. The first essay is designed to draw inferences about lenders' demand for lease accounting rules in light of proposed lease accounting standard changes. I study changes in lease-related debt covenants surrounding the adoption of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards 13: Accounting for Leases in 1976. I find that lenders are significantly less likely to inhibit leasing activity via lease restrictions after SFAS 13 adoption and that lenders are significantly more likely to modify debt covenants to capitalize operating leases across time in the post-SFAS 13-adoption period. …

The Humility Effect: Mitigating Intergroup Conflict, Reese Haydon, Dr. Kurt Sandholtz May 2015

The Humility Effect: Mitigating Intergroup Conflict, Reese Haydon, Dr. Kurt Sandholtz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Prior techniques for solving intergroup prejudice have shown limited practical application. Common to these techniques is an emphasis on understanding and appreciating the competencies of the out-group members (i.e., disconfirming the in-group’s stereotypes of the out-group). The purpose of our research is to build a case for a different approach—one that emphasizes in-group humility, or recognition by in-group members of their own strengths and weaknesses.
