Discrimination In Selection Decisions: Integrating Stereotype Fit And Interdependence Theories, Sunyoung Lee, Marko Pitesa, Stefan Thau, Madan M. Pillutla

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We integrate stereotype fit and interdependence theories to propose a model that explains how and why decision makers discriminate in selection decisions. Our model suggests that decision makers draw on stereotypes about members of different social groups to infer the degree to which candidates possess the specific ability required for the task. Decision makers perceive candidates that have a greater ability required for the task as less (more) instrumental to their personal outcomes if they expect to compete (cooperate) with the candidate, and they discriminate in favor of candidates that are perceived as more instrumental to them. We tested our …

Singaporeans face two key risks in life: dying too young and living too long. The latter risk, commonly known as longevity risk, has been the key focus of the Central Provident Fund Advisory Panel's recent deliberation and recommendations. By saving the Basic Minimum Sum and purchasing a life annuity, Singaporeans can hedge the risk of outliving their lifetime savings.

The Impact Of Culture On Creativity: How Cultural Tightness And Cultural Distance Affect Global Innovation Crowdsourcing Work, Roy Y. J. Chua, Yannig Roth, Jean-François Lemoine Jun 2015

The Impact Of Culture On Creativity: How Cultural Tightness And Cultural Distance Affect Global Innovation Crowdsourcing Work, Roy Y. J. Chua, Yannig Roth, Jean-François Lemoine

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper advances a new theoretical model to understand the effect of culture on creativity in a global context. We theorize that creativity engagement and success depend on the cultural tightness—the extent to which a country is characterized by strong social norms and low tolerance for deviant behaviors—of both an innovator’s country and the audience’s country, as well as the cultural distance between these two countries. Using field data from a global online crowdsourcing platform that organizes creative contests for consumer-product brands, supplemented by interviews with marketing experts, we found that individuals from tight cultures are less likely than counterparts …

Will High-Frequency Trading Practices Transform The Financial Markets In The Asia Pacific Region?, Robert John Kauffman, Yuzhou Hu, Dan Ma Jun 2015

Will High-Frequency Trading Practices Transform The Financial Markets In The Asia Pacific Region?, Robert John Kauffman, Yuzhou Hu, Dan Ma

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

High-frequency trading (HFT) practices in the global financial markets involve the use of information and communication technologies (ICT), especially the capabilities of high-speed networks, rapid computation, and algorithmic detection of changing information and prices that create opportunities for computers to effect low-latency trades that can be accomplished in milliseconds. HFT practices exist because a variety of new technologies have made them possible, and because financial market infrastructure capabilities have also been changing so rapidly. The U.S. markets, such as the National Association for Securities Dealers Automated Quote (NASDAQ) market and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), have maintained relevance and …

Continuous Monitoring Of Enterprise Risks: A Delphi Feasibility Study, Robert Baksa May 2015

Continuous Monitoring Of Enterprise Risks: A Delphi Feasibility Study, Robert Baksa

Dissertations

A constantly evolving regulatory environment, increasing market pressure to improve operations, and rapidly changing business conditions are creating the need for ongoing assurance that organizational risks are continually and adequately mitigated. Enterprises are perpetually exposed to fraud, poor decision making and/or other inefficiencies that can lead to significant financial loss and/or increased levels of operating risk. Increasingly, Information Systems are being harnessed to reinvent the risk management process. One promising technology is Continuous Auditing, which seeks to transform the audit process from periodic reviews of a few transactions to a continuous review of all transactions. However, the highly integrated, rapidly …

Information Filtering By Multiple Examples, Mingzhu Zhu May 2015

Information Filtering By Multiple Examples, Mingzhu Zhu

Dissertations

A key to successfully satisfy an information need lies in how users express it using keywords as queries. However, for many users, expressing their information needs using keywords is difficult, especially when the information need is complex. Search By Multiple Examples (SBME), a promising method for overcoming this problem, allows users to specify their information needs as a set of relevant documents rather than as a set of keywords.

Most of the studies on SBME adopt the Positive Unlabeled learning (PU learning) techniques by treating the user's provided examples (denoted as query examples) as positive set and the entire data …

Assessing Learning Outcomes And Social Capital Formation Resulting From The Use And Sharing Of Internet Knowledge Resources, Regina S. Collins May 2015

Assessing Learning Outcomes And Social Capital Formation Resulting From The Use And Sharing Of Internet Knowledge Resources, Regina S. Collins

Dissertations

Today’s “digital natives” use the Internet to address most, if not all, their learning-related knowledge needs. This research evaluates the outcomes of formal learning activities requiring students to use, manage, share, and consolidate Internet knowledge resources (such as websites, videos, and blogs) to achieve both individual and group learning. This research takes an integrative approach to learning, capturing learner cognitive, interpersonal, and intrapersonal characteristics as well as the impact of the digital environment by evaluating the technological affordances of two different systems supporting such learning activities. This research also examines pedagogical modifications that would best integrate course assignments utilizing Internet …

Bank Monitoring: Impact On Equity Reit Risk And Return, Mariya Letdin May 2015

Bank Monitoring: Impact On Equity Reit Risk And Return, Mariya Letdin

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The first half of this paper studies the impact of bank screening on the risk of asset collateral pledged against secured loans for a sample of US equity REITs. Using a unique, hand-collected data sample, I show that bank screening results in lower risk assets being pledged as collateral, a finding confirmed by property type risk and location risk. Further, I find evidence consistent with the role of monitoring for secured, non-recourse mortgage loans. Finally, examining risk at the company level, I find that screening and monitoring of REITss assets via utilizing secured mortgage financing (as opposed to unsecured, recourse …

Essays On International Payout, Governance, And Information, Richard Clifton Herron

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This dissertation consists of four chapters that span international payout policy, firm- and country-level governance, and information in capital markets.

Chapter 1: This chapter tests if information gathered by investment bankers during a firm's initial public offering (IPO) creates value in a subsequent acquisition of that same firm. In a sample of 1,519 all-public acquisitions, for 54 of these acquisitions the target's IPO underwriter later becomes the acquirer's adviser. These "same adviser" acquisitions outperform, with three-day acquirer cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) that are 4% higher, all else equal. This outperformance is through both better acquisitions and better prices, and combined …

Think Unbound: Changing The Way People View And Teach Creativity In The Work Environment, Michael Wienke May 2015

Think Unbound: Changing The Way People View And Teach Creativity In The Work Environment, Michael Wienke

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

The traditional model of innovation in the workplace leaves no room for the true meandering nature of innovation and thus detracts from effective workplace innovation. This paper presents a new non-linear model, the Clover Model, which guides thinkers through a flexible and interconnected six-step process of innovation while still allowing room for the cycles and epicycles of real-world innovation. The “clover” refers to the 4 interconnected critical and creative thinking epicycles (investigation, ideation, incubation and refinement) that come together at a central point and allow thinkers to follow the natural ebbs and flows of innovation by seamlessly transitioning between clover …

The Effects Of Home Country, Gender, And Position On Listening Behaviors, Deborah B. Roebuck, Reginald L. Bell, Reeta Raina, Cheng Ean Lee

Faculty Articles

Regardless of national culture, often listening is mentioned as an important component for effective business operations. In addition, understanding how individuals of different national cultures perceive and process listening is fundamental to our global world of work. The present study used Glenn and Pood (1989) Listening Self-Inventory to examine the distracted and attentive listening behaviors of male and female managers and non-managers who worked full time inthe countries of India, Malaysia, and the United States of America (USA). Findings in this study suggestUSA females and males, in general, are less likely to be attentive listeners than the Indian and Malaysianrespondents …

Shaky Foundations: The Tradeoff Between Structural Safety And Financial Security, Grace Daly May 2015

Shaky Foundations: The Tradeoff Between Structural Safety And Financial Security, Grace Daly

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This paper investigates the relationship between the financial positions of a subcontractor and their performance on the construction site. Financial default by a subcontractor can cost general contractors additional time and expense, as they try to find replacements and keep the projects on schedule. This highlights the importance of vetting subcontractors before awarding a bid. This study attempts to bridge the gap between the subjective nature of construction quality and the more technical financial analysis in determining the overall quality of subcontractors. Safety measures are also incorporated into performance ratings. Data is collected for the years 2009 through 2014 from …

Marketing Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study is to examine the moderating effect of gender on the relationship between environmental concern and attitude towards green purchasing behavior from a Lebanese consumer perspective. This study is based on socialization theory, which suggests that individual behavior is shaped by gender expectation in relation to the cultural context. An online questionnaire was used to collect data from Lebanese consumers with independent purchasing power. A total of 326 complete questionnaires were analyzed in this study. The moderating effect of gender was found to be significant and affect both environmental concern and attitude towards green purchasing behavior. …

The Relevance Of Economic, Institutional And Cultural Determinants For Venture Capital Investments. A Us-Europe Comparison., Nadja Benes May 2015

The Relevance Of Economic, Institutional And Cultural Determinants For Venture Capital Investments. A Us-Europe Comparison., Nadja Benes

Master's Theses

This study analyzes the determinants of early-stage VC investments by identifying characteristics in the economic, institutional, as well as cultural framework that could explain the diverging levels of early-stage VC investments across countries. Data was assembled for 16 countries during the period from 1995 until 2013. The results indicate that countries that are more open to trade are associated with higher levels in early-stage venture capital. A higher unemployment rate negatively affects a country’s level of early-stage VC funds. Higher R&D expenditures as a proxy for the technological and innovation capacity in a country as well as a higher value …

Purpose: The purpose of this design was to integrate various apparel construction techniques used throughout history in one creative garment.

Process: Inspiration for the design came from recent trips to Paris, London, and Milan. My imagination was sparked while I was engrossed in the stories and images of these historical cities were people have lived their lives and fashion evolved over hundreds of years. Drawing inspiration from a boat ride down the Seine River in Paris and the miles-long network of canals, the monuments and carvings at Westminster Abbey, the Wedding Dress 1775-2014 exhibit at the Victoria and Albert Museum, …
