Estimating The Reproducibility Of Psychological Science, Alexander A. Aarts, Et Al, Stephanie C. Lin Aug 2015

Estimating The Reproducibility Of Psychological Science, Alexander A. Aarts, Et Al, Stephanie C. Lin

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Reproducibility is a defining feature of science, but the extent to which it characterizes current research is unknown. We conducted replications of 100 experimental and correlational studies published in three psychology journals using high-powered designs and original materials when available. Replication effects were half the magnitude of original effects, representing a substantial decline. Ninety-seven percent of original studies had statistically significant results. Thirty-six percent of replications had statistically significant results; 47% of original effect sizes were in the 95% confidence interval of the replication effect size; 39% of effects were subjectively rated to have replicated the original result; and if …

Leveraging Social Capital To Obtain Top Management Support In Complex, Cross-Functional It Projects, Gloria H. W. Liu, Eric T. G. Wang, Cecil Eng Huang Chua Aug 2015

Leveraging Social Capital To Obtain Top Management Support In Complex, Cross-Functional It Projects, Gloria H. W. Liu, Eric T. G. Wang, Cecil Eng Huang Chua

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research argues that a major reason for IT project failure is the lack of top management support. However, obtaining top management support is often considered outside the IT project team's control. In this paper, we investigate how IT project teams can obtain such support. We find that creating and mobilizing social capital through repeated interaction with top managers and their confidants helps a project obtain top management support. Also, a failure to use social capital to engage top management can cause a decrease in their support. We demonstrate these points through a natural experiment of the support of three division …

Customer expectations can be extremely nebulous. This research identifies the demographic segmentations and their respective expectations for the spa market. Interviews were conducted and a subsequent questionnaire was employed to gather the voice of the customer and assess the expectations of spa clientele. All of the data was collected from luxury spas in Hawaii, and consisted of respondents from all over the world. Results of the survey suggest that while men want more tangible benefits of a spa, women prefer the experiential qualities of peace and rejuvenation. Additionally, those of lower to middle income focus on the atmosphere more than …

Self-Esteem And Women’S Performance In Mixed-Gender Negotiations, Serena Changhong Lu, Elizabeth Layne Paddock, Jochen Reb Aug 2015

Self-Esteem And Women’S Performance In Mixed-Gender Negotiations, Serena Changhong Lu, Elizabeth Layne Paddock, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Past research shows gender stereotype threat effect negatively affects women's economic negotiation outcomes, but little is known about moderators of this effect. The present research investigated self-esteem (SE) level and social contingent self-esteem (SCSE) as potential buffers to the gender stereotype threat effect. Based on the contingencies of self-worth model (Crocker & Wolfe, 2001), we hypothesized that SE level interacts with SCSE to determine women's outcomes at the bargaining table such that high SE women with low SCSE do not confirm gender stereotypes and achieve higher performance in mixed-gender negotiations. Drawing on the integrated process model of stereotype threat effects …

Consumer Responses To Imported Products: The Product Adoption Process, Antecedents, And Consequences, Miguel Angel Sahagun Aug 2015

Consumer Responses To Imported Products: The Product Adoption Process, Antecedents, And Consequences, Miguel Angel Sahagun

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

When consumers adopt imported products, they may rely on a different adoption process than they do when adopting domestic products, primarily because imported products are developed under different positioning strategies in foreign markets that have different levels of development. Little is known about how the process of adopting imported products differs from that involved in adopting domestic products and to what extent the process influences consumer purchase intention. Several factors influence the adoption process of imported products. The main goals of this research are 1) explaining consumers' purchase intention for imported products, 2) examining the process consumers engage in when …

An Empirical Assessment Of Patient Healthcare Quality: A Lean Hospital Supply Chain Perspective, Subhajit Chakraborty Aug 2015

An Empirical Assessment Of Patient Healthcare Quality: A Lean Hospital Supply Chain Perspective, Subhajit Chakraborty

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Improving the quality of healthcare services available to patients and increasing the efficiency of treatment processes are two pressing needs of the U.S. healthcare system. Aside from extensive research on medicine and disease-specific cures, extant literature does not offer a comprehensive framework that considers all determinants of patient care quality. The objective of this research is to offer an empirically tested framework that may be used by full-service U.S. hospitals to improve the quality of care available to their admitted patients. This framework draws in variables from both external as well as internal hospital supply chains, as recommended by many …

Religious Consumption: Inside The Minds Of Apple And Catholic Devotees, Yi-Chia Wu Aug 2015

Religious Consumption: Inside The Minds Of Apple And Catholic Devotees, Yi-Chia Wu

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Cult-like phenomena have been researched widely in the fields of marketing, religion, sociology, and---more recently---in the field of neuroscience, where the exploration between individuals and brands through these lenses begins to offer glimpses into the relationship between brands and their devotees. Religion, a multidimensional influence on human behavior and decision-making, has been under-researched in the marketing discipline due to the sensitivity of religious topics and difficulties in measuring the impact of so potentially broad a field as "religion". This research narrows the topic and begins filling in the gap in the religion-brand relationship and explores what constitutes a cult-like allegiance …

Kpmg Global Anti Bribery And Corruption: Rising To The Challenge In The Age Of Globalization, Themin Suwardy, Poh Sun Seow, Pan, Gary

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Corruption continues to corrode the global economy, 18 years after member governments of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) signed a convention1 that establishes legally binding standards to criminalize the bribery of public officials. Since then, a growing number of governments have passed anti-bribery and corruption (ABC) laws. The U.S. is no longer the lone policeman on the beat; the UK and other European governments have implemented anti-corruption regulations too, as have emerging economies including China and Brazil.

Despite tougher enforcement of regulations to combat bribery and corruption, illicit payments to counter-parties continue to burden economies, diverting resources …

An Investigation Of The Centrality Of Competing Institutional Logics For Social Enterprises., Tae Jun Bae Aug 2015

An Investigation Of The Centrality Of Competing Institutional Logics For Social Enterprises., Tae Jun Bae

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social enterprises have recently been recognized as organizations located in the field where two competing institutional logics co-exist preeminently. My dissertation attempts to examine the conditions under which the centrality of competing institutional logics, referring to the degree to which two competing institutional logics are both important to organizational functioning, is higher or lower in social enterprises. Using hand-collected data from the survey of 190 social enterprises in South Korea, this dissertation not only presents a validated and reliable measure for the centrality of competing logics, but also identifies the factors associated with variation in a social enterprise’s centrality of …

Singapore’S Housing Policies: Responding To The Challenges Of Economic Transitions, Sock Yong Phang

Research Collection School Of Economics

Singapore has developed its own unique state-driven housing system, with more than three quarters of its housing stock built by the Housing and Development Board and homeownership financed through Central Provident Fund savings. As a result, it has one of the highest homeownership rates amongst market economies. This paper provides a historical perspective of the main housing problems faced by successive prime ministers and their respective policy responses. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew (1959-1990), the government established an integrated landhousing supply and housing finance framework to channel much needed resources into the housing sector to deal …

The Impact Of Information Quality Awareness On Users' Behaviors Toward Information Quality Practices, Javier Flores

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Healthcare organization rely more on electronic information to optimize most of their processes. Additional information sources and more diverse information increase the relevance and importance of information quality (IQ). The quality of information needs to be improved to support a more efficient and reliable utilization of information systems (IS). This improvement can only be achieved through the implementation of initiatives followed by most users across the organization. The purpose of this study is to develop a model related to how awareness of IS users about IQ issues would affect their actual practices toward IQ initiatives. It is posited that users’ …

Managing Risk And Resilience: From The Editors, Gerben Van Der Vegt, Peter Essens, Margareta Wahlstrom, Gerard George

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Ten years of Global Risks reports by the World Economic Forum show a daunting list of risks that challenge humankind, including water and food crises, terrorist attacks, cybercrime, financial crises, and extreme weather events, among others (World Economic Forum, 2015). The annual number of these high-risk events worldwide has steadily increased from around 350 in 1980 to almost 1,000 in 2014 (UN, 2015). Managing the devastation of these disaster events extends beyond concerns about mortality; economic losses are rising from around U.S.$50 billion in the 1980s to around U.S.$250 billion in the last decade (UN, 2015). Similarly, cataclysmic effects caused …

Tail Event Driven Asset Allocation: Evidence From Equity And Mutual Funds Markets, Wolfgang Karl Hardle, David K. C. Lee, Sergey Nasekin, Xinwen Ni, Alla Petukina Aug 2015

Tail Event Driven Asset Allocation: Evidence From Equity And Mutual Funds Markets, Wolfgang Karl Hardle, David K. C. Lee, Sergey Nasekin, Xinwen Ni, Alla Petukina

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The correlation structure across assets and opposite tail movements are essential to the asset allocation problem, since they determine the level of risk in a position. Correlation alone is not informative on the distributional details of the assets. Recently introduced TEDAS -Tail Event Driven ASset allocation approach determines the dependence between assets at tail measures. TEDAS uses adaptive Lasso based quantile regression in order to determine an active set of negative nonzero coefficients. Based on these active risk factors, an adjustment for intertemporal correlation is made. In this research authors aim to develop TEDAS, by introducing three TEDAS modifications differing …

New Product Development Flexibility In A Competitive Environment, Janne Kettunen, Yael Gruksha-Cockayne, Zeger Degraeve, Bert De Reyck Aug 2015

New Product Development Flexibility In A Competitive Environment, Janne Kettunen, Yael Gruksha-Cockayne, Zeger Degraeve, Bert De Reyck

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Managerial flexibility can have a significant impact on the value of new product development projects. We investigate how the market environment in which a firm operates influences the value and use of development flexibility. We characterize the market environment according to two dimensions, namely (i) its intensity, and (ii) its degree of innovation. We show that these two market characteristics can have a different effect on the value of flexibility. In particular, we show that more intense or innovative environments may increase or decrease the value of flexibility. For instance, we demonstrate that the option to defer a product launch …

Opaque Financial Reporting Due To Unemployment Concerns, Jeffrey Ng, Tharindra Ranasinghe, Guifeng Shi, Holly I. Yang Aug 2015

Opaque Financial Reporting Due To Unemployment Concerns, Jeffrey Ng, Tharindra Ranasinghe, Guifeng Shi, Holly I. Yang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

This paper examines the link between rank-and-file employees’ unemployment concerns and financial reporting opacity. Following Agrawal and Matsa (JFE, 2013), we use exogenous variations in state unemployment insurance benefits to capture changes to unemployment concerns. We find that when unemployment concerns are lower, there is less opaque financial reporting. This relation is stronger when workers face higher unemployment risk, labor union participation is high, and executives have higher equity incentives. Using Tobin’s Q to capture firm value, we also find that the economic rationale to engage in opaque financial reporting reduces when unemployment benefits are high. Our findings suggest that …
