Improving Public Health Safety Nets After An Economic Recession, Sanjay Basu Oct 2014

Improving Public Health Safety Nets After An Economic Recession, Sanjay Basu

Center for Policy Research

When we say ‘here’s what’s going on with our nation’s health,’ how do we know the answer? Where is the data coming from? How can we best evaluate our public health system? We’re talking about it every day on CNN given the Ebola scare. What do we mean by our ‘public health system’? I would argue that we should expand our definition to mean something more than hospitals and clinics, or doctors and nurses. In particular, I’ll argue that some of our non-health programs that we have as part of the safety net actually make a bigger health impact than …

The Impact Of Symbiotic Visions: Increasing Engagement And Motivation Through Vision Alignment, Jodi Berg Oct 2014

The Impact Of Symbiotic Visions: Increasing Engagement And Motivation Through Vision Alignment, Jodi Berg

Student Scholarship

It is believed that symbiotic visions can drive employees and organizations toward a common objective based on the premise that people will attain a higher level of motivation and engagement when they are working toward a personal purpose. The field of organizational development has been aspiring to help organizations and people align their vision for decades without much, if any, empirical support for the assumption that alignment helps. This qualitative study examines the impact of a company's aspirational vision statement, or higher purpose, on motivating and engaging employees. The presence and lack of congruency between senior managers' personal callings and …

توظيف عوائد القطاع النفطي في الاقتصاد الجزائري, سيهام شباب

Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences

Muthanna Journal of Administrative and Economics Sciences

Leveling The Playing Field: Financial Regulation And Disappearing Local Bias Of Institutional Investors, Gennaro Bernile, Alok Kumar, Johan Sulaeman Oct 2014

Leveling The Playing Field: Financial Regulation And Disappearing Local Bias Of Institutional Investors, Gennaro Bernile, Alok Kumar, Johan Sulaeman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study examines how changes in firms’ information environment affect local agents. We show that local bias and informational advantage of institutional investors and equity analysts located around corporate headquarters decline sharply following the adoption of Regulation Fair Disclosure and Sarbanes-Oxley Act. The decline in local bias is more salient among firms whose information environment is more opaque before the new rules. At the aggregate market level, the degree of informed trading attributed to local investors also declines. Overall, the evidence is consistent with disclosure regulation affecting the informational advantage that market participants enjoy due to their proximity to firms.

The Role Of Simmelian Friendship Ties On Retaliation Within Triads, Kenneth T. Goh, David Krackhardt, Laurie R. Weingart, Tat Koon Koh Oct 2014

The Role Of Simmelian Friendship Ties On Retaliation Within Triads, Kenneth T. Goh, David Krackhardt, Laurie R. Weingart, Tat Koon Koh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine the effect of friendship in triads on retaliatory responses to unfair outcomes that originate from a group member. Drawing on Simmel's classic discussion of relationships in social triads versus dyads, we hypothesized that the effect of unfairness on retaliation between friends is stronger when the third party in the triad is a mutual friend, rather than a stranger. We also draw on social categorization theory to hypothesize that the effect of unfairness on retaliation between strangers is stronger when the third party is a friend of that stranger than when the triad consists of all strangers. Hypotheses were …

This is Old Dominion University's 15th Annual State of the Region Report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

Finance And Social Responsibility In The Informal Economy: Institutional Voids, Globalization And Microfinance Institutions, Hao Liang, Chris Marquis, Sunny Li Sun Oct 2014

Finance And Social Responsibility In The Informal Economy: Institutional Voids, Globalization And Microfinance Institutions, Hao Liang, Chris Marquis, Sunny Li Sun

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine how different types of country-level globalization and the industry structure of microfinance institutions (MFIs) affect organization-level microcredit interest rates which crucially affect the poor's entrepreneurial opportunities. We develop an opportunity structure perspective that argues that MFI interest rates can be reduced by egalitarian-based social globalization but increased by neoliberal-based economic globalization. Moreover, stronger presence of nonprofit organizations in the microfinance industry lowers interest rates. Furthermore, these three forces can moderate the relationship between MFIs' outreach to the poor and average interest rate. Analyses of 2,559 MFI observations across 74 countries from 2002 - 2012 largely support our hypotheses.

An Assessment Of The Assimilation Of Lean And Supply Chain Management Practices In The Construction Industry, Helen S. Nunez

Open Access Theses

The purpose of this research was to identify and assess the success factors corresponding to Lean and Supply Chain Management that are currently applicable to the construction industry. These factors were originally extracted from manufacturing research and practice and corroborated construction industry literature and expert validation. Using Pearson's correlation coefficients, the researcher was able to identify the correlation among factors and with the identified measures of overall performance. Another important output of this research was the ability to compare the construction industry response level with a preceding study from manufacturing. The data was collected through a survey sent to general …

Customer Envy At Service Encounters, Gerardo Anaya Oct 2014

Customer Envy At Service Encounters, Gerardo Anaya

Open Access Theses

Envy has been regarded as a complex emotion which can produce both positive and negative outcomes for consumers. This study explored the subjective experience of customer envy at service encounters in order to better understand how customers respond to unflattering comparisons with an envied customer. A questionnaire was designed to measure the cognitive appraisals, emotional responses, and consequences of customer envy. Study participants were also asked to share their envy incidents in the survey. A sample of 300 participants was collected and used for analysis. The findings illustrate that distinctively different patterns of cognitive appraisals such as preferential treatment, are …

The Effects Of Acquisition On Restaurant Firms’ Performance: Different-Sector Versus Same-Sector Acquisitions, Yongjin Lee Oct 2014

The Effects Of Acquisition On Restaurant Firms’ Performance: Different-Sector Versus Same-Sector Acquisitions, Yongjin Lee

Open Access Theses

This study examines the postacquisition accounting performance of acquiring firms in the restaurant industry between 1992 and 2012. Specifically, this study investigates the effects of different-sector and same-sector restaurants acquisitions between full-service and limited-service restaurants on restaurant firms' performance. Additionally, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and regression model are used to examine return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE) for the accounting performance of the acquiring restaurants.

The ROA and ROE reveal that the profitability is significantly negative up to 5 years after firms are acquired. However, negative effects are strongest within the first year after acquisition and decrease …

Essays On Corporate Bank Loan Contracting, Leann G. Pashnyak Oct 2014

Essays On Corporate Bank Loan Contracting, Leann G. Pashnyak

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of two essays on corporate bank loan contracting. The purpose of the first essay is to investigate the effect of loan's designated purpose on loan agreement contracting terms, as well as to examine whether lenders apply different standards to assess the value of borrower's corporate governance for each type of loan purpose. Using a large sample of private bank loans, the results indicate that both price and non-price loan terms vary significantly by loan purpose. Specifically, the spread yield varies by about 182 basis points (bps) for loans made for different purposes. Further, borrowers of operations …

Essays On Pricing Of Cardinality Bundles, Jianqing Wu Oct 2014

Essays On Pricing Of Cardinality Bundles, Jianqing Wu

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation studies the pricing of cardinality bundles, where firms set prices that depend only on the size of the purchased bundle, a practice that is increasingly being adopted by industry. The first essay develops a fast combinatorial technique to obtain the optimal prices for cardinality bundles. The second essay extend the basic model to solve the problem when there exists fixed costs or economies of scale. The third essay relax a key assumption in cardinality bundling literature, which restricts each consumer to purchase no more than one bundle.

Project Portfolio Evaluation And Selection Using Mathematical Programming And Optimization Methods, Hugo Caballero Oct 2014

Project Portfolio Evaluation And Selection Using Mathematical Programming And Optimization Methods, Hugo Caballero

Open Access Dissertations

Project portfolio selection is an essential process for portfolio management and plays an important role in accomplishing organizational goals. This research explores the feasibility of developing a project portfolio selection tool by using mathematical programming and optimization models, specifically 0-1 integer programming (one objective portfolio) and goal programming (multiple objectives portfolio). These methods select the set of projects which deliver the maximum benefit (e.g., net present value, profit, etc.) represented for objective functions subjected to a series of constraints (e.g., technical requirements and/or resources availability) considering the scheduling of selected projects in a planning horizon, interdependence relationship among projects (e.g., …

On Maximizing Annualized Option Returns, Charles J. Higgins

Finance Faculty Works

While options do generally demonstrate an increase in prices as time increases, an annualized return of their excess premiums exhibit other characteristics including a lower return on options farther out of the money, that as the exercise price is farther out of the money that the expiration with the greatest annualized return is longer in time, and more interestingly that for underlying securities having larger standard deviations the greatest annualized option returns are found with options having shorter expirations.

Dynamic Asset Allocation: A Bayesian Approach, Yalan Feng Oct 2014

Dynamic Asset Allocation: A Bayesian Approach, Yalan Feng

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The first half of this dissertation consists of two essays addressing dynamic asset allocation problem by exploring time-varying volatility and covariance between different assets.

In the first essay, I propose a time-varying Bayesian approach based on autoregressive models. To allow a parsimonious specification while improving predictive power, I specify a step function that considerably decreases the number of parameters to be estimated. To reduce data dimensionality, I use orthogonal portfolios instead of correlated assets in estimation and forecast. Finally, a Bayesian estimation is applied to dynamically update coefficients and error variance. I combine Bayesian time-varying autoregression with step function restriction …

The Shadow Banking System In The United States, Bhakti Joshi Oct 2014

The Shadow Banking System In The United States, Bhakti Joshi

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In 2008 the United States suffered a devastating economic collapse. Millions of Americans were unemployed; families lost their homes; and long time businesses were forced to shut down. These events put the United States into an economic depression so deep that the country has yet to fully recover. The crisis was not a natural disaster but varieties of private sector agents such as banks and hedge funds were responsible for its efficient cause. Even though the housing and stock bubbles were generated largely by market forces rather than by government policies, the US government policies and institutions also played a …
