Rethinking Cross-Border Talent Management: The Emerging Markets Perspective, Tejpavan Gandhok, Richard Raymond Smith

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A closer look at the relatively little understood issue of how and why emerging market MNCs manage their senior talent for international growth leads us to question the conventional wisdom on talent management practices.

Double Adjusted Mutual Fund Performance, Jeffrey Busse, Lei Jiang, Yuehua Tang Nov 2014

Double Adjusted Mutual Fund Performance, Jeffrey Busse, Lei Jiang, Yuehua Tang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We develop a new approach for estimating mutual fund performance that controls for both factor model betas and stock characteristics in one measure. Our double adjustment procedure shows that fund returns are significantly related to stock characteristics in the cross section after controlling for risk via factor models. Compared to standard mutual fund performance estimates, the new measure substantially affects performance rankings, with a quarter of funds experiencing a change in percentile ranking greater than ten. Double-adjusted fund performance persists a full nine years after the initial ranking period, much longer than standard performance. Moreover, inference based on the new …

Kinship In Entrepreneur Networks: Performance Effects Of Resource Assembly In Africa, Jane N. O. Khayesi, Gerard George, John Antonakis Nov 2014

Kinship In Entrepreneur Networks: Performance Effects Of Resource Assembly In Africa, Jane N. O. Khayesi, Gerard George, John Antonakis

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine the relationship among structural social capital, resource assembly, and firm performance of entrepreneurs in Africa. We posit that social capital primarily composed of kinship or family ties helps the entrepreneur to raise resources, but it does so at a cost. Using data drawn from small firms in Kampala, Uganda, we explore how shared identity among the entrepreneur's social network moderates the relationship between social capital and outcomes. A large network contributed a higher quantity of resources raised, but at a higher cost when shared identity was high. We discuss the implications of these findings for the role of …

The Role Of Operations Executives In Strategy Making, Lieven Demeester, Arnoud De Meyer, Jovan Grahovac Nov 2014

The Role Of Operations Executives In Strategy Making, Lieven Demeester, Arnoud De Meyer, Jovan Grahovac

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Creating competitive advantage based on operations capabilities is likely to require much analysis and communication within the operations function. At the same time, much communication and joint strategizing with the top and other functional executives is likely to be needed as well. Hence, given that operations executives have limited time and also have to perform many other routine tasks, they need to manage two tradeoffs. The first one is between the time spent on strategy making and the time spent on everything else. The other is within strategy making, between the time spent on "functional deliberation" within the operations function …

An Ecological Model For Digital Platforms Maintenance And Evolution, Paolo Rocchi, Paolo Spagnoletti, Subhajit Datta Nov 2014

An Ecological Model For Digital Platforms Maintenance And Evolution, Paolo Rocchi, Paolo Spagnoletti, Subhajit Datta

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The maintenance of software products has been studied extensively in both software engineering and management information systems. Such studies are mainly focused on the activities that take place prior to starting the maintenance phase. Their contribution is either related to the improvement of software quality or to validating contingency models for reducing maintenance efforts. The continuous maintenance philosophy suggests to shift the attention within the maintenance phase for better coping with the evolutionary trajectories of digital platforms. In this paper, we examine the maintenance process of a digital platform from the perspective of the software vendor. Based on our empirical …

Risk Sharing In An Asymmetric Environment, Eric Fesselmeyer, Leonard J. Mirman, Marc Santugini Nov 2014

Risk Sharing In An Asymmetric Environment, Eric Fesselmeyer, Leonard J. Mirman, Marc Santugini

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

We study the effect of an asymmetric environment on risk sharing. In our model, entrepreneurs consider undertaking risky projects in the real sector as well as selling part of their projects to investors. To capture the idea of an asymmetric environment, the returns on the alternative risk-free investment are allowed to differ between the entrepreneurs and the investors, i.e., agents have different opportunity costs of participating in the risky projects. We first show that the presence of asymmetric options establishes links between the risk-free and risky sectors as well as between the real and financial sectors. In particular, an asymmetric …

Managing Seller Heterogeneity In A Competitive Marketplace, R. Wu, Mei Lin Nov 2014

Managing Seller Heterogeneity In A Competitive Marketplace, R. Wu, Mei Lin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The growth of online marketplaces is accompanied by significant heterogeneity of the third-party sellers. The marketplace owner often applies policies that favor the sellers who offer higher values to buyers, which puts the lower-value sellers at an even greater disadvantage. This leads to the phenomenon of Matthew Effect. Our study focuses on a marketplace owner’s policy in managing seller heterogeneity and analyzes Matthew Effect in a competitive market environment. By extending the circular city model, we analytically examine the price competition among a large number of sellers that differ both in variety and in their value offerings. We present the …

International Expansion Through Flexible Replication: Rethinking The Propositions, Emmanuel T. Kodzi Nov 2014

International Expansion Through Flexible Replication: Rethinking The Propositions, Emmanuel T. Kodzi

Faculty Publications

The international expansion of businesses today invites the analysis of organizational mechanisms that allow these businesses to thrive in spite of the known challenges of doing business in a foreign culture or market. Specifically, the extent to which firms replicate their existing business models relative to the perceived need for local adaptation is topical. This paper is a commentary on the brilliant work of Anna Jonsson and Nicolai Foss, who outline a model of flexible replication, drawing from a longitudinal study of IKEA, the famous Swedish home furnishing company. Their study concludes with four propositions for further investigation. For the …

Space Separatism: Degree Of Differentiation, Luke R. Stover, Alan A. Johnson Nov 2014

Space Separatism: Degree Of Differentiation, Luke R. Stover, Alan A. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Space is so important that the DOD recognizes it as one of five domains in which US forces operate (the other four are land, sea, air, and information). In 2001 Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld designated the Department of the Air Force (DAF) the “Executive Agent for Space for the DOD.” Given the national importance of space activities, the formation of a separate space force has been a topic of persistent discussion in academic and doctrinal circles ever since the United States first entered the space age. Proponents of a separate force argue that because space is an inherently unique …

Organizational Learning As Catalyst To Technological Innovation, Jongbae Kim, David Wilemon

Asia Marketing Journal

With rapid change and intensive competition in the global economy, the capability to capture, absorb, develop, and transfer new knowledge is a key organizational success factor. Through effective learning, companies are more likely to develop the innovation, quality, and responsiveness essential to meet the growing expectations of customers and the disruptive threats of competitors and new technologies. In the paper the role of technological innovation and its relationship to organizational learning in managing technology-based new products are examined. Several factors which can influence the rate and effectiveness of organizational learning are identified. Barriers to learning also are discussed. Finally, several …

Automotive Telematics Market Segmentation Based On Quality Expectations, Dayoung Kim, Donghee Kim, Jungsuk Oh Oct 2014

Automotive Telematics Market Segmentation Based On Quality Expectations, Dayoung Kim, Donghee Kim, Jungsuk Oh

Asia Marketing Journal

This paper explores the possibility of segmentation of consumers based on their quality expectations toward the automotive telematics service. Hypotheses on utilizing consumers’ expectations toward the automotive telematics service for the market segmentation and linking the segments with optimal product designs are formulated. Samples are segmented based on their perceived service quality to the service attributes from various configurations of automotive telematics service. Then, a regression analysis on the segmented groups of users is performed to check whether they have qualitatively differing evaluation on the service quality. The result indicates that the proposed segmentation is operational and differing product attributes …

Cultural Tunneling Effect, Seungkook Roh Oct 2014

Cultural Tunneling Effect, Seungkook Roh

Asia Marketing Journal

Many researchers have analyzed the relationship between the financial success patterns of a motion picture and many other factors, such as the production cost, marketing, stars, awards, reviews, genre, and rating. Through these studies, many researchers and investors concluded that big budgets to make a blockbuster movie can serve as an insurance policy to meet their ROI; thus the box office is dominated by blockbuster movies. High-budget blockbuster movies are more likely to receive attention because these movies are more recognizable given their high expenses for production and casting. Therefore, audiences choose blockbusters in an effort to reduce the searching …

To Bid Or Not To Bid?, Yingying Ma, Luping Sun Oct 2014

To Bid Or Not To Bid?, Yingying Ma, Luping Sun

Asia Marketing Journal

The selection of keywords for bidding is a critical component of paid search advertising. When the number of possible keywords is enormous, it becomes difficult to choose the best keywords for advertising and then subsequently to assess their effect. To this end, we propose an ultrahigh dimensional keyword selection approach that not only reduces the dimension for selections, but also generates the top listed keywords for profits. An empirical analysis using a unique panel dataset from a large online clothes retailer that advertises on the largest search engine in China (i.e., Baidu) is presented to illustrate the usefulness of our …

How Consumer Characteristics Moderate Time Effects On Online Purchase Preference, Zhen Li, Lin Huang Oct 2014

How Consumer Characteristics Moderate Time Effects On Online Purchase Preference, Zhen Li, Lin Huang

Asia Marketing Journal

In this paper, we posit that time-related effects (i.e., the importance of saving time) on patronage preference for shopping online will be moderated by consumer characteristics. To explore these moderating effects, we empirically examine the moderating roles of consumer characteristics on the respective effects of shopping-time-saved and delivery on online purchase preference. On the basis of analyses performed on data gleaned from an Internet-based survey, this study demonstrate that time effects related to both shopping-time-saved and delivery on online purchase preference are more pronounced for consumers who are male, young, and more starved for time. In addition, the effect of …

Airport Performance And Ownership Structure: Evidence From The United Kingdom, United States, And Latin America, Bijan Vasigh, G. Rod Erfani, Brian W. Sherman Oct 2014

Airport Performance And Ownership Structure: Evidence From The United Kingdom, United States, And Latin America, Bijan Vasigh, G. Rod Erfani, Brian W. Sherman

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

This study investigates the operational and financial efficiency of airports in selected countries using a cross-regional analysis. A total factor productivity (TFP) approach is used to examine the operational and financial efficiencies of selected airports in the United States, the United Kingdom, and several Latin American countries. The empirical results indicate mixed implications and suggest that the privatized airports in the United Kingdom outperform the partially privatized, government-owned airports in Latin America; however, the evidence also suggests that the selected United States airports outperform the other two groups for each year of this investigation (2000– 2010). The ambivalence of these …

Establishing A Benchmark Of Fuel Efficiency For Commercial Airline Operations, Samuel Chandra, Chetan K. Chitgopeker, Ben Crawford, John Dwyer, Yi Gao Oct 2014

Establishing A Benchmark Of Fuel Efficiency For Commercial Airline Operations, Samuel Chandra, Chetan K. Chitgopeker, Ben Crawford, John Dwyer, Yi Gao

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

Fuel efficiency is vital for commercial airlines as fuel is one of the most costly items for airline operations. This study aims to compare fuel efficiencies of selected airlines around the globe and to build a benchmark of fuel efficiency that can be referred to by airlines. By using data on fuel consumption and traffic output collected from various sources including airline annual reports, environmental reports and sustainability reports, this study calculated fuel efficiencies measured by liters of fuel consumed per revenue tonne kilometer (RTK) for the selected airlines in the calendar year 2011 or financial year 2010–2011. Airlines were …

Advancing Theories Of Women And Leadership, Julia Storberg-Walker, Susan R. Madsen Oct 2014

Advancing Theories Of Women And Leadership, Julia Storberg-Walker, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Although there are many leadership frameworks, models, and theories, the majority of them were developed by men and are based on male-normed assumptions (Jogulu & Wood, 2006). There is clearly a gap in the literature in terms of individual and organizational leadership theories that focus on women. To help address this gap, in January 2014 a group of 70 scholars started an intensive collaboration to generate new theories of leadership for women. They will meet in Utah in May 2014 for a two-day theory building colloquium, titled “Advancing Theories of Women and Leadership.” The collaboration and May 2014 Colloquium will …
