Antecedents Of Foreign Corporate Political Activity In American Politics, Lee Warren Brown Jan 2014

Antecedents Of Foreign Corporate Political Activity In American Politics, Lee Warren Brown

Management Dissertations - Archive

International firms compete in the United States in both the market and non-market arenas (Doh, & Lucea, 2013). The international management literature has a long history of research focused on market competition but, non-market competition has been largely ignored (Lawton, McGuire & Rajwani, 2013). At the same time, there is a large and increasing amount of money being spent by foreign firms on lobbying and other non-market activities in America. In an effort to aid in our understanding of foreign firms who engage in corporate political activity (CPA) in the United States, I investigated foreign firms that engage in CPA …

Regulation Of Derivative Financial Instruments (Swaps, Options, And Futures), Ronald H. Filler, Jerry W. Markham Jan 2014

Regulation Of Derivative Financial Instruments (Swaps, Options, And Futures), Ronald H. Filler, Jerry W. Markham

Books

As a result of the Dodd-Frank Act Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010, derivatives regulation has become a hot topic on Wall Street and is, therefore, of much interest to law firms with financial institutions as clients. An increasing number of classes on this subject are being taught at law schools around the country, but, to date, there has been no casebook on the subject.

This casebook explores the regulation of swaps, futures and options by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission. It examines the regulatory history of derivative instruments and traces …

Teaching Llcs Through A Problem-Based Approach, Michelle M. Harner, Robert J. Rhee Jan 2014

Teaching Llcs Through A Problem-Based Approach, Michelle M. Harner, Robert J. Rhee

Faculty Scholarship

Case studies and case simulations can be used to teach LLCs with an eye toward training business lawyers. These tools can be used in the traditional four-credit Business Associations (BA) course to supplement traditional teaching materials with mini-case studies that accent and apply analysis of primary legal sources. Alternatively, case studies and case simulations can be the centerpiece of a specialized course on LLCs. We discuss both approaches in this short essay.

An Empirical Examination Of The Determinants Of The Us Financial Ceos' Compensation For The Post-Financial Crisis Period, Eunsup Daniel Shim, Jooh Lee Jan 2014

An Empirical Examination Of The Determinants Of The Us Financial Ceos' Compensation For The Post-Financial Crisis Period, Eunsup Daniel Shim, Jooh Lee

WCBT Faculty Publications

The US financial crisis of 2008 and subsequent Global Financial Crisis were considered by many economists the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. As a results, Dodd-Frank Act has passed and aims “(1) to promote the financial stability of the United States by improving accountability and transparency in the financial system, to end "too big to fail", (2) to protect the American taxpayer by ending bailouts, (3) to protect consumers from abusive financial services practices, and for other purposes.”*** The enactment of Dodd-Frank Act, in part, intended to significantly influence accountability on executive compensation especially for …

Modeling Stock Return Volatility In Mongolian Stock Market, Munkhtsog Altankhuu Jan 2014

Modeling Stock Return Volatility In Mongolian Stock Market, Munkhtsog Altankhuu

Theses

This paper is one of the first research works to examine the stock index volatility in the Mongolian Stock Exchange. The study utilizes the Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity (GAR CH) models to estimate volatility of stock market return of the Mongolian Stock Exchange. A number of prior research work demonstrated that ARCH and GARCH models are fruitful models for modeling volatility of time series data. However, they recommend using different versions of GARCH-type models for different distributions (Normal, Student's t, Skewed Student's t and Generalized Error Distribution) for emerging markets or developing markets. This paper compares the GARCH(l, 1) model …

Information Systems User Competency: A Conceptual Foundation, Brenda Eschenbrenner, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works

Research has identified a variety of factors that influence people's intentions to use IS and their degree of IS use. However, what has not been well understood are the characteristics of competent IS users who are proficient in using IS and are able to achieve quality IS usage. Considering that improving IS users' abilities to more efficiently and effectively use IS has always been and remains a challenge, research that provides a comprehensive view of the characteristics associated with competent IS users is warranted. This paper addresses this research question by proposing a conceptual foundation for IS user competency. Based …

The Flash Crash: An Examination Of Shareholder Wealth And Market Quality, Thomas J. Boulton, Marcus V. Braga-Alves, Manoj Kulchania Jan 2014

The Flash Crash: An Examination Of Shareholder Wealth And Market Quality, Thomas J. Boulton, Marcus V. Braga-Alves, Manoj Kulchania

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

We investigate stock returns, market quality, and options market activity around the flash crash of May 6, 2010. Abnormal returns are negative on the day of and the day after the flash crash for stocks that had trades that executed during the crash subsequently cancelled by either Nasdaq or NYSE Arca. Consistent with studies that suggest that other sources of liquidity withdrew from the markets during the flash crash, we find that the fraction of trades executed by the NYSE increases during this volatile period. Market quality deteriorates following the flash crash as bid-ask spreads increase and quote depths decrease. …

Gender Composition Of Occupations And Earnings: Why Enter A Female Dominated Occupation?, Peter G. Toumanoff, Timothy J. Keaveny Jan 2014

Gender Composition Of Occupations And Earnings: Why Enter A Female Dominated Occupation?, Peter G. Toumanoff, Timothy J. Keaveny

Management Faculty Research and Publications

Given the inverse relationship between the proportion of females employed in an occupation and earnings, why enter a female-dominated occupation? It has been argued that an individual’s total compensation from work is a combination of wage compensation plus non-pecuniary compensation associated with job characteristics, and when choosing an occupation, one selects the utility-maximizing combination of wages and job characteristics. Our findings support the theory that employee and job characteristics are rewarded differently in non-female dominated (NFD) and female dominated (FD) occupations, and that people choose occupations that reward their attributes more or penalize them less. Comparison of the variables significantly …

Management Faculty Publications

In today’s technologically driven world, there is a need to better understand the ways that common computer malfunctions affect computer users. These malfunctions may have measurable influences on computer user’s cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses. An experiment was conducted where participants conducted a series of web search tasks while wearing functional nearinfrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and galvanic skin response sensors. Two computer malfunctions were introduced during the sessions which had the potential to influence correlates of user trust and suspicion. Surveys were given after each session to measure user’s perceived emotional state, cognitive load, and perceived trust. Results suggest that fNIRS …

North-African Immigration To France: Economic Benefit Or Burden?, Adam Weaver Jan 2014

North-African Immigration To France: Economic Benefit Or Burden?, Adam Weaver

Honors Theses

Over the past several years, France has had a steadily increasing immigrant population. Most of these immigrants come from fellow European nations, but North-Africans follow closely behind as the second largest group of French immigrants. The ever-increasing Maghrebian population in urban areas has caused hostility from French natives as social unrest rises in response to the European sovereign debt crisis of 2008. The goal of this thesis is two-fold. First, it aims to show the growing intolerance that North-Africans are experiencing in French society. And second, it will examine the consequences of North-African immigration on the labor market outcomes of …

Sentiment-Induced Institutional Trading Behavior And Asset Pricing In Securitized Real Estate Markets, Prashant K. Das, Julia Freybote, Gianluca Marcato

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Institutional investors such as pension funds or insurance companies commonly invest in the unsecuritized and securitized real estate market. We investigate how institutional investor sentiment in the inefficient commercial real estate market affects institutional trading behavior in the REIT market and subsequently asset pricing. In particular, we test two alternative theories - flight to liquidity and style investing theory - to explain the sentiment induced trading behavior of institutional investors in the REIT market for the pre-crisis (2002-2006), crisis (2007-2009) and post-crisis (2010-2012) period. We find that the applicability of either theory depends on economic conditions. In the pre-crisis period …

The Consequences Of Somali Piracy On International Trade, La'nita M. Johnson Jan 2014

The Consequences Of Somali Piracy On International Trade, La'nita M. Johnson

Global Tides

In the last decade, piracy in the African waters, especially surrounding Somalia, has vastly increased. Due to a previous civil war, absence central government in the country and lack of natural resources, Somalia is presently one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world—which many say is a large stimulus in the rise and expansion of piracy. Although these attacks frequently go unnoticed, they have a large-scale effect on the global economy and international trade. This paper will first briefly observe the history of piracy, then go on to introduce the recent prevalence of Somali pirates off of the Horn …

Resource Security: Competition For Global Resources, Strategic Intent, And Governments As Owners, A. Erin Bass, Subrata Chakrabarty Jan 2014

Resource Security: Competition For Global Resources, Strategic Intent, And Governments As Owners, A. Erin Bass, Subrata Chakrabarty

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

We develop a resource security perspective by examining the resources that multinational firms acquire when investing abroad. Firms can acquire resources to increase power and decrease dependence for long-term security (exploration) or acquire resources for relatively shorter-term gains and consumption (exploitation). We find state owned enterprises (SOEs) acquire resources for exploration, and pay more for these resources than non-state owned enterprises (NSOEs). We contribute to the literature by suggesting that long-term resource security is of immediate importance to SOEs and their home countries, that ownership influences resource acquisitions, and investments can be a safeguard for the SOE’s home country’s future.

Reinstating Employer Accountability By Protecting All Forms Of Whistleblowing: Erisa Section 510, Roshni Hemlani Jan 2014

Reinstating Employer Accountability By Protecting All Forms Of Whistleblowing: Erisa Section 510, Roshni Hemlani

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

In the United States, employers who have little formal accountability largely manage health and retirement benefits of the working class. Employers face an enormous amount of responsibility to properly manage and protect the health and retirement benefits of their employees and their families. These organizational entities, however, are not subject to similar institutional safeguards as major public pension funds. Thus, Congress enacted the Employment Retirement Income Securities Act to charge employers with fiduciary duties of care over such plans. However, the remedies for those who breach their duty by mishandling funds or arbitrarily dispensing and denying benefits are quite limited. …

Social Media Strategy: The Keys To Successfully Penetrating Online Communities, Joshua Patrick Conroy Jan 2014

Social Media Strategy: The Keys To Successfully Penetrating Online Communities, Joshua Patrick Conroy

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

The proliferation of social media usage has made engagement with social networks a marketing imperative. The effectiveness of any marketing effort is largely dependent on the quality and implementation of its strategy. Social media generates an intense amount of interest as a marketing platform because of its low cost and wide reach. However, this study finds that leveraging social media may be far more effective as a public relations asset than as an advertising platform. This study in no way deals with the effects of paid advertising on social media, but focuses instead on utilizing social media for unpaid marketing …

Lean Transformation: Overcoming The Challenges, Managing Performance, And Sustaining Success, David A. Marshall Jan 2014

Lean Transformation: Overcoming The Challenges, Managing Performance, And Sustaining Success, David A. Marshall

Theses and Dissertations--Marketing and Supply Chain

To remain competitive in a global market, many organizations are transforming their operations from traditional management approaches to the lean philosophy. The success of the Toyota Production System in the automotive industry serves as a benchmark that organizations continually seek to emulate in search of similar results. Despite the abundance of lean resources, many organizations struggle to attain successful lean transformation. To facilitate investigation of the failure mechanisms and critical success factors of lean transformation, this dissertation addresses the following research questions: (1) Why do transformations from traditional organizational philosophies to lean fail? (2) What are the critical factors for …

Developing A Method For Measuring "Working Out Loud", Dennis E. Pearce Jan 2014

Developing A Method For Measuring "Working Out Loud", Dennis E. Pearce

Theses and Dissertations--Finance and Quantitative Methods

Enterprise social network software platforms (ESNs) are increasingly being deployed in firms across almost every industry as a means of fostering employee collaboration. Although benefits in increased productivity, innovation, and employee engagement are highly touted, there is a high failure rate of these deployments. This often occurs because (1) there is a misapplied focus on technology adoption rather than adoption of the employee behaviors that are ultimately required to obtain those benefits, and (2) it is unclear what those behaviors are and how to measure them.

“Working Out Loud” is one possible framework for understanding and measuring the behaviors necessary …

How They Think You Got There Matters: Attributions About Networking Behavior And Performance, Theresa M. Floyd Jan 2014

How They Think You Got There Matters: Attributions About Networking Behavior And Performance, Theresa M. Floyd

Theses and Dissertations--Management

Certain properties of individuals’ social networks within their organizations are known to be associated with benefits. However, these properties are not universally beneficial for all individuals. To explain the differing utility of social connections for different actors, network research has tended to focus on factors relating to the actor’s characteristics, agency and cognition. With this dissertation, I explore a different contingency affecting actors’ abilities to leverage their networks: how observers perceive and evaluate the behavior of actors as they craft and use their networks, and how these attributions impact actors’ job performance.

I develop a theoretical framework that incorporates social …

Entrepreneurial Orientation, Collaborative Networks, And Nonprofit Performance, Brandon Ofem Jan 2014

Entrepreneurial Orientation, Collaborative Networks, And Nonprofit Performance, Brandon Ofem

Theses and Dissertations--Business Administration

In this mixed-method study, I explore the idea that an entrepreneurial orientation serves as a key driver of nonprofit organizational performance, and that a focal nonprofit’s set of collaborative ties moderates that relationship. I theorize that for nonprofits operating in an environment characterized by resource scarcity, possessing an EO is vital. More specifically, I theorize that organizations with smaller and less heterogeneous sets of collaborative ties benefit more from an EO than those with larger and more heterogeneous sets. I also explore the possibility that a focal nonprofit’s pattern of collaborative ties may be a function of that nonprofit’s EO. …

How Do Consumers Use Social Shopping Websites? The Impact Of Social Endorsements, Pei Xu Jan 2014

How Do Consumers Use Social Shopping Websites? The Impact Of Social Endorsements, Pei Xu

Theses and Dissertations--Business Administration

Social endorsements are user-generated endorsements of products or services, such as “likes” and personal collections, in an online social platform. We examine the effect of prior social endorsements on subsequent users’ tendency to endorse or examine a product in a social shopping context, where a social platform connect consumers and enable a collaborative shopping experience. This research consists of two parts. In part I, we identify two ways prior social endorsements can affect subsequent user behavior: as a crowd endorsement, which is an aggregate number of endorsements a product receives for anyone who comes across the product, and as …

Board Governance Of World-Class Annual Sport Championships: Learning From Kentucky To Create Tourism Opportunities In The Bahamas, Elvis V. Burrows

Theses and Dissertations--Retailing and Tourism Management

The economy of The Bahamas relies heavily on leisure visitor tourism (cruise ships, resorts, holiday trips) which leaves the country vulnerable to changes in visitor travel habits. Because the country is so reliant on investments in resorts, casinos and cruise ships, it leaves a wide capacity of other touristic opportunities. One opportunity is sports tourism. The purpose of this study is to analyze the strategic board capability of the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event’s (RK3DE) board governance using the Ferkins and Shilbury (2012) model as the theoretical construct and make recommendations regarding the application of these successful aspects to the …

The Influence Of The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People During A Merger Of A Fire Department And Emergency Medical Services In A Midwestern State : A Single Case Study From 2007 To 2013, Lisa Barnes Greco

Dissertations

Problem. Organizational mergers are difficult and often chaotic at best, fraught with unknowns that can derail the best of plans. In this study, two cultures, fire suppression and emergency medical services, were brought together in order to create a stronger fire department by consolidating resources and knowledge and to appease an ever-tightening municipal budget. How to save the best practices from each side and create a new culture was the conundrum the leadership team faced.

The purpose of this study was to understand how Stephen Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People influenced the change dynamics experienced during the …

Direct-To-Consumer Advertising Of Drugs And Patients' Health Care Seeking Behaviors, Patricia Elaine Kennedy-Tucker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Known as direct-to-consumer advertising (DTCA), pharmaceutical companies in the United States are permitted to advertise prescription drugs directly to consumers. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if an association exists between DTCA and health care-seeking behaviors. The theoretical framework for this study involved social learning theory, information integration theory, and prospect theory. The research questions identified if exposure to DTCA (a) is associated with physician office visits, (b) influences a patient/physician conversation regarding a prescription, (c) influences requesting a prescription, and (d) has an impact on patients' ratings of the overall interaction with the physician. Data were …

Academic Analytics In Higher Education: Barriers To Adoption, Willie L. Pomeroy Jan 2014

Academic Analytics In Higher Education: Barriers To Adoption, Willie L. Pomeroy

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The analysis of big data points and the use of data analytics have proven successful in improving corporate business efficiencies, growing profits, and increasing competitive advantages. The theory of academic capitalism, which holds that institutions of higher education are becoming more like corporations due to declining operating funds and the need to become more efficient, transparent, and competitive, guided this study. Despite the positive outcomes that analytic tools may produce in advanced efficiencies and competitive growth, college academic administrators have not yet adopted these tools, due in part to barriers facing the administrators. The purpose of this phenomenological study was …
