The emergence of the 21st century was plagued with extensive, evasive and disheartening leadership failures. Moral and ethical deficiencies were prevalent in many charismatic, dynamic and seemingly transformational leaders that had risen to prominence in both the public and private sectors. In response, leadership and management theorists began to place a renewed emphasis on the importance of ethics and morality in exemplary leaders, and a plethora of values based leadership (VBL) theories emerged. This paper analyzes the impact of deregulation on board structure by comparing the boards of electric utilities before and after the passage of the Energy Policy Act (EPACT) using a unique hand-collected data set. The primary focus of the study is on changes to the boards' character, determined by the background and expertise of the directors. The results show that electric utilities change their board structure in response to their new operating environment. Boards are smaller and more independent in the later period. The primary purpose of this study was to examine the work experience for paid, part-time event staff within public assembly facilities and posited the “employee sportsphere” as a more comprehensive approach to study the work experience of event staff. Specifically, this study explored event staff ratings of various aspects of the employee sportsphere, explored the relationship between the employee sportsphere and overall job satisfaction, and explored the relationship between overall job satisfaction and employees’ willingness to return to work. A census of paid, part-time event staff at a multipurpose public assembly facility (N = 406) generated a 70.2% response rate. …

Agricultural producers and public health authorities apply pesticides to control pests that damage crops and carry diseases. Due to the toxic nature of most pesticides, they are regulated by governments. Regulatory provisions require pesticides to be registered and restrictions operate to safeguard human health and the environment. Yet pesticides used near surface waters pose dangers to non-target species and drinking water supplies leading some governments to regulate discharges of pesticides under pollution discharge permits. We examine the sensitivities of aggregate balances of retail and institutional money market funds (MMFs) and their potential substitutes, bank deposits, to changes in short-term interest rates while controlling for calendar-time effects. We find that institutional MMF and time deposit cash flows are sensitive to recent changes in short-term interest rates. Institutional MMF investors appear to take advantage of arbitrage opportunities created by MMFs using the amortized cost technique. Retail MMF investors are much less responsive to changes in interest rates.

Real earnings management (REM) has gained more attention due to its more extensive application than that before the enactment of Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). Analysts' earnings forecast is an important benchmark for both the investors and the managers. Gunny (2010) finds that the signaling of future prospects overcomes the possibility of opportunism in firms that occasionally use REM to meet/closely beat benchmarks. The dissertation addresses unanswered questions in asset valuation through the lens of financial distress in three different asset markets namely equity market, residential property market and REITs market. The first two essays explore the valuation impact of financial distress in equity and residential property markets while the third essay examines the role of information asymmetry in REITs market around credit rating announcements. In the first essay, I investigate why highly distressed firms earn low returns. The papers were selected from academic journals from business, as well as psychology, education and management. I examine the various terms and definitions used for team learning, as well as measurement methods. I discuss models of team learning as a process of learning and its placement within the three levels of learning: individual, team, and organizational. I also suggest future directions and areas of focus for future research into team learning and its merits in the workplace.

Increasing instances of incivility (e.g. rudeness or disrespect) in the workplace have led to the growing popularity of incivility research within the mistreatment literature. It is believed that incivility may encourage reciprocated behaviors that escalate in intensity. However, the underlying processes by which these `incivility spirals' occur are not yet well understood. Therefore, based on social exchange theory and theories of emotion and organizational justice, I propose and test a multilevel model that examines the effects of daily experienced incivility on daily negative behaviors (e.g. instigated incivility and counterproductive behaviors) via a desire for revenge and state anger. This study examines the effect of sport involvement and fans’ beliefs about sponsorship on certain sponsorship outcomes in the context of professional basketball. Quantitative data were collected from a survey of 222 spectators attending a professional basketball game in Greece. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was employed to examine the validity of the scale. Overall, the examination of the structural parameters indicated that attitude towards sponsors was significantly predicted by sport involvement and beliefs about sponsorship, while it significantly predicted purchase intentions, word of mouth, and fans’ satisfaction from the use of sponsor’s products.

This study examines the influence of analysts on the timing of returns associated with firms’ earnings news, and the implications for returns prediction. This is important for determining the lapse between the time when pieces of earnings news are available, when such news are incorporated in prices, and the implications for a returns trading strategy based on earnings prediction. The results show that depending on the level of analysts’ forecasting activities for a firm, there is a significant variation in the timing of the returns associated with the firm’s total, industry-wide and firm-specific components of earnings news.
