Summary Of Analysis And Marketing Plan Prepared For A Haitian Handicraft Company, Christian Syphus, Dr. Christopher Meek

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The economic and political instability of Haiti has rendered it “the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and its only least-developed country” (1). Familiar with social unrest due to military takeovers and high unemployment, Haitian leadership has struggled to provide consistency for its citizens since Haiti became the first black independent nation in 1804. The future of Haiti depends on the ability of its leaders to discover solutions to bring it successfully into the 21st century.

What Is Socially Responsible Business?, Kevin Pestinger Feb 2014

What Is Socially Responsible Business?, Kevin Pestinger

Journal of Undergraduate Research

It is becoming increasingly apparent in the world of business that companies have to address the issue of social responsibility. Consumers have begun to demand, with both their purchases and their investment dollars, that companies start to account for their impacts on numerous social issues such as poverty, unemployment, the environment, and world peace. As information becomes readily available to the masses, people recognize the disparity between those whom business should serve and those whom business does serve. The future of business does not lie in the maximization of profits for the owners at the expense of society, but rather …

Reducing Conflict And Violence In Hospitality Establishments., James Peter Murphy Feb 2014

Reducing Conflict And Violence In Hospitality Establishments., James Peter Murphy

Conference papers

Bar owners and staff members must be more concerned about safety and security issues. This is the result of a variety of factors, most notably recent legislative changes at national and international level and the subsequent high costs of assaults (including costs relating to litigation and compensation). Poor health, safety and security standards place staff members and customers at risk of serious injury if not death; employers suffer in terms of lost productivity and potentially higher premiums and the morale of the staff, as well as the industrial relations climate in the bar, can be adversely affected. At a minimum, …

Russian Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau Feb 2014

Russian Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

With the Winter Olympics finally underway is it possible that the American journalists, if we can use that term in these circumstances, will be able to write about something other than the failure of Russia to be the United States? Having traveled to Russia multiple times since the collapse of the Soviet Union, I have witnessed the remarkable transformation of this society. Caught in a time warp created by the failure of the Soviet Union, the standard of living of the average Russian trailed behind that of most of Western Europe and the United States. The Soviet Union was not …

Professor Frank Shuman Recognized In Ima Magazine, Usu Jon M. Huntsman School Of Business

Jon M. Huntsman School of Business News Collection

The student chapter at Utah State University is one of IMA’s ongoing success stories. For 18 consecutive years, the chapter has achieved the Gold Level Award of Excellence. For five of those years, including 2013, it’s been named an Outstanding Student Chapter, which is granted to only a few schools each year. That’s quite a track record – and although he’s too modest to admit it, a large portion of the credit goes to Frank Shuman, CMA, pictured here, who’s been the chapter’s faculty advisor (now an IMA Campus Advocate) since that long, successful run began.

Frog In The Pan: Continuous Information And Momentum, Zhi Da, Umit G. Gurun, Mitch Warachka Feb 2014

Frog In The Pan: Continuous Information And Momentum, Zhi Da, Umit G. Gurun, Mitch Warachka

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We test a frog-in-the-pan (FIP) hypothesis that predicts investors are inattentive to information arriving continuously in small amounts. Intuitively, we hypothesize that a series of frequent gradual changes attracts less attention than infrequent dramatic changes. Consistent with the FIP hypothesis, we find that continuous information induces strong persistent return continuation that does not reverse in the long run. Momentum decreases monotonically from 5.94% for stocks with continuous information during their formation period to –2.07% for stocks with discrete information but similar cumulative formation-period returns. Higher media coverage coincides with discrete information and mitigates the stronger momentum following continuous information.

Seeing Others As Others See Us, James Peter Murphy

Conference papers

The many challenges to the bar industry today include increased competition from a variety of entertainment sources, Bar owners recognize that other establishments are providing a similar offering sometimes at lower prices. This realization has brought about an increased focus on the care of customers and their viewpoints. Customers encounters can include attitudes of indifference from staff and poor overall service. Dissatisfied customers usually talk to others about their dissatisfaction and the negative effect of this outcome can paralyze, all your best pro-active customer and marketing efforts. It costs, on average, five times as much to win a new customer …
