A Change Management Approach To Enhance Facility Maintenance Programs, Stanton P. Brown Mar 2014

A Change Management Approach To Enhance Facility Maintenance Programs, Stanton P. Brown

Theses and Dissertations

A recent study assigned a grade of D+ on the nation's public infrastructure. Because of this poor asset condition, many organizations tend to respond to maintenance in a reactive mode; however, relying on corrective maintenance leads to increased maintenance costs due to unplanned downtime, increased labor costs, and inefficient use of personnel. To address this situation, asset management (AM) principles should be employed to transition organizations towards a proactive maintenance program. Unfortunately, it has been shown that two-thirds of the organizations failed to implement general change efforts. Therefore, an organizational change management framework should be followed to implement a change …

Research Brief: "Unemployment, Earnings, And Enrollment Among Post 9/11 Veterans", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This study found that Afghanistan/Iraq era veterans have a higher likelihood of unemployment than non-veterans, with female veterans faring worse than their male counterparts. In practice, female veterans of the post-9/11 era suffer from higher absolute levels of unemployment than male veterans, as well as also experiencing a higher unemployment penalty from their service relative to their civilian counterparts than male veterans do. In policy, policymakers may wish to determine ways to increase utilization of GI Bill benefits among disadvantaged populations to increase their long-term employment and earnings. Suggestions for future study include considering the surge of female veterans, and …

Disruption Of Information Technology Projects: The Reactive Decoupling Of Project Management Methodologies, Kurt W. Schmitz Mar 2014

Disruption Of Information Technology Projects: The Reactive Decoupling Of Project Management Methodologies, Kurt W. Schmitz

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Information Technology projects have migrated toward two dominant Project Management (PM) methodologies. Plan-driven practices provide organizational control through highly structured plans, schedules, and specifications that facilitate oversight by hierarchical bureaucracies. In contrast, agile practices emphasize empowered teams using flexible methods aligned to organizational values reinforced by cultural controls and rituals. While project teams mix and combine practices from both traditions, a stylistic bias remains in the initial project management practices established at the onset of IT projects. A review of existing literature on IT project management serve as a filter on the stylistic biases of these dominant PM paradigms that …

The Benefit Of Financial Advisors, Steven D. Dolvin Mar 2014

The Benefit Of Financial Advisors, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Many individual investors believe that the primary role of a financial advisor is to "pick stocks." However, research shows that not only are active managers not able to outperform the market consistently, but that the security selection piece is really not the most important determinant of portfolio return. The key issue is asset allocation. A recent report (see article here, InvestmentNews) suggests that financial advisors can add value, but primarily from activities unrelated to security selection: determining asset allocation, helping clients avoid behavioral errors, facilitating rebalancing, reducing fees, and managing taxes and withdrawals.

High Frequency Trading And Market Efficiency, Steven D. Dolvin Mar 2014

High Frequency Trading And Market Efficiency, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Arbitrage is, essentially, taking advantage of mispricing across (or within) markets to earn a risk-free profit. In an efficient market, such opportunities would be rare. A recent Fed report (see article here, Bloomberg) finds that high frequency traders have effectively reduced the number of arbitrage opportunities, thereby improving market efficiency.

Stubborn Taxation Regime, Ishrat Husain Dr. Mar 2014

Stubborn Taxation Regime, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Successive governments have been confronted with the issue of a stagnant or declining tax revenue stream. Many reforms of the Federal Board of Revenue, tax policy and tax administration have been attempted but the results have been painfully disappointing.

To analyse the reasons for the tax regime’s intractable nature we have to adopt a more systemic approach by dissecting the economy into sectors including rural and urban; formal, informal and illicit; agriculture, industry and services; and income distribution groups.

Of Pakistan’s potential labour force of 75 million, 18 million are not participating, five million are unemployed and 52 million employed. …

Friends Or Foes?: Examining Social Capital Of International Ngos And Food Security Programs, Mariah Ann Kraner Mar 2014

Friends Or Foes?: Examining Social Capital Of International Ngos And Food Security Programs, Mariah Ann Kraner

Dissertations and Theses

Food insecurity and chronic hunger are devastating global problems currently facing more than a billion people. There are many actors involved in the response to stomp out world hunger, including International Non-Governmental Organizations (INGOs). These INGOs, however, work in tumultuous environments with limited resources. This dissertation examines the INGOs involved in the food security dilemma (N=51) to investigate how they use resources to reach hungry populations.

It is hypothesized INGOs use a mix of material resources and social capital to enhance their organizational performance. However, little is known about the impact these resources have on reaching communities in need. Social …
