Big Data And Management: From The Editors, Gerard George, Martine R. Haas, Alex Pentland Apr 2014

Big Data And Management: From The Editors, Gerard George, Martine R. Haas, Alex Pentland

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Big data is everywhere. In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on big data, business analytics, and "smart" living and work environments. Though these conversations are predominantly practice driven, organizations are exploring how large-volume data can usefully be deployed to create and capture value for individuals, businesses, communities, and governments (McKinsey Global Institute, 2011). Whether it is machine learning and web analytics to predict individual action, consumer choice, search behavior, traffic patterns, or disease outbreaks, big data is fast becoming a tool that not only analyzes patterns, but can also provide the predictive likelihood of an event.

Friends And Foes: The Dynamics Of Dual Social Structures, Maxim Sytch, Adam Tatarynowicz Apr 2014

Friends And Foes: The Dynamics Of Dual Social Structures, Maxim Sytch, Adam Tatarynowicz

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper investigates the evolutionary dynamics of a dual social structure encompassing collaboration and conflict among corporate actors. We apply and advance structural balance theory to examine the formation of balanced and unbalanced dyadic and triadic structures, and to explore how these dynamics aggregate to shape the emergence of a global network. Our findings are threefold. First, we find that existing collaborative or conflictual relationships between two companies engender future relationships of the same type, but crowd out relationships of the different type. This results in (a) an increased likelihood of the formation of balanced (uniplex) relationships that combine multiple …

Satiation From Sensory Simulation: Evaluating Foods Decreases Enjoyment Of Similar Foods, Jeff Larson, Joseph P. Redden, Ryan S. Elder Apr 2014

Satiation From Sensory Simulation: Evaluating Foods Decreases Enjoyment Of Similar Foods, Jeff Larson, Joseph P. Redden, Ryan S. Elder

Faculty Publications

We demonstrate in two studies that people get more satiated on a food after repeatedly rating or choosing among similar foods shown in pictures. Repeated evaluations of food apparently have an effect similar to actual consumption—decreased enjoyment of foods that share a similar taste characteristic (i.e., sensory-specific satiety). We provide mediation evidence to show that satiation manifests because considering a food engenders spontaneous simulations of the taste of that food item, which by itself is enough to produce satiation. These findings establish sensory simulations as an important mechanism underlying satiation, and provide behavioral evidence that simple evaluations can produce sensory-specific …

Systems Theory Based Framework For Competency Models, Joseph M. Bradley Apr 2014

Systems Theory Based Framework For Competency Models, Joseph M. Bradley

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to develop and apply a systems theoretic framework for design, analysis and transformation of competency models using an inductive research design. This research examines the origins and development of competency models from a systems theoretic perspective. Competency models have been largely developed by a comparative method first proposed by McClelland, or the use of Delphi method survey techniques. The assumption that a population containing an exemplar and fully successful members would enable population of a holistic competency model has reported numerous failures. Similarly, reporting on the use of Delphi methods has focused on attempting …

Assessing The Impact Of Electronic Health Record Systems Implementation On Hospital Patient Perceptions Of Care, Katherine Sofia Palacio Salgar Apr 2014

Assessing The Impact Of Electronic Health Record Systems Implementation On Hospital Patient Perceptions Of Care, Katherine Sofia Palacio Salgar

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The delivery of health care services has been impacted by advances in Knowledge Management Information Systems (KMIS) and Information Technology (IT). The literature reveals that Electronic Health Records Systems (EHRs) are a comprehensive KMIS. There is a wide recognition in the body of knowledge that demonstrates the potential of EHRs to transform all aspects of health care services and, in consequence, the performance of Health Care Delivery Organizations (HCDO). Authors of published research also agree that there is a need for more empirical contributions that demonstrate the impact of EHRs upon HCDO. It is argued that in most cases, studies …

Mutual Performance Monitoring In Virtual Teams, Nathan Haugejorde Bjornberg Apr 2014

Mutual Performance Monitoring In Virtual Teams, Nathan Haugejorde Bjornberg

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

The use of virtual teams in organizations has become commonplace (SHRM, 2012). While a great deal of research on teamwork exists, much of it has focused on collocated teams. Spatial and temporal separations inherent in virtual teams make working together as a team more difficult. This research examined a teamwork process previously unexplored within virtual teams -- mutual performance monitoring. An experimental intervention was conducted and outcomes at both the individual and team levels of analysis were examined. A total of 161 participants were assigned to work together in 47 teams on a decision-making task. Participants communicated and worked together …

Assessing Organizational Effectiveness Through The Competing Values Framework A Data Envelopment Approach, Raghavender Macherla Apr 2014

Assessing Organizational Effectiveness Through The Competing Values Framework A Data Envelopment Approach, Raghavender Macherla

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study proposes a model to diagnose organizations using the mathematical principles of data envelopment analysis (DEA) to the variables generated using competing values framework (CVF) in order to evaluate overall organizational effectiveness. The notion of organizational effectiveness is abstract and difficult to measure due to its complexity and multi-functional nature. Over the years, measurement of organizational effectiveness has remained a challenge due to the lack of agreement on the factors that should be assessed to determine effectiveness. This research is aimed at shedding some light into this topic by using data envelopment analysis as a tool to measure relative …

New Media And The Nfl Fan: Determining The Impact Of New Media On Team Identification In Displaced Nfl Fans, Dorothy R. Collins Apr 2014

New Media And The Nfl Fan: Determining The Impact Of New Media On Team Identification In Displaced Nfl Fans, Dorothy R. Collins

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

Sports team identification, when viewed through the lens of social identity theory (Tajfel, 1978), can be seen as a powerful means of maintaining one's sense of self and feelings of belonging as part of a group. In some cases, team identification has been found to be based on one's feelings of connection with the geographic location of that team (Uhlman & Trail, 2012). Furthermore, prior research has shown that bonds of team identification forged in one's youth are particularly strong (James, 2001). The surge of new media options that have appeared in the last decade are changing the way in …

Adverse Impacts Of Furlough Programs On Employee Work Rate And Organizational Productivity, Adedeji B. Badiru Apr 2014

Adverse Impacts Of Furlough Programs On Employee Work Rate And Organizational Productivity, Adedeji B. Badiru

Faculty Publications

This article is primarily a research-provoking exposition against the management approach used in the 2013 government furlough program. It is intended to prompt potentially productive research investigations on the impact of personnel furloughs, particularly on defense acquisition programs. Defense acquisition programs are time-sensitive and systems oriented. What appears as a minor delay in one unit of an acquisition life cycle can lead to long-term encumbrances within the entire defense system, resulting in enormous cost escalation. Pertinent analytical techniques/methodologies are provided to illustrate potential pathways for further research studies of furloughs and how they adversely impact organizational productivity. The author’s intent …

Audit Committee Oversight Of Fraud Risk, Robert M. Wilbanks Apr 2014

Audit Committee Oversight Of Fraud Risk, Robert M. Wilbanks

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

This study examines how audit committees (ACs) fulfill their responsibilities for assessing fraudulent financial reporting (FFR) risk by focusing on the social influence/risk aversion relationship. Although the AC’s responsibility for assessing FFR risk is arguably one of its most important roles, ACs lack consensus on how to perform the task of fraud risk oversight. This study explores this issue at a deeper level by examining the relationship between the AC’s fraud risk assessment process and the professional and personal ties that exist between AC members and (a) management (CEO and CFO), and (b) other corporate governance actors (internal audit, external …

An Investigation Of Sustainable Product Purchase Behavior: A Social Cognitive Perspective Of Consumer Action, Keith Edmund Ferguson Apr 2014

An Investigation Of Sustainable Product Purchase Behavior: A Social Cognitive Perspective Of Consumer Action, Keith Edmund Ferguson

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Environmentally friendly products have been available since the 1970s receiving both praise and skepticism on the part of consumers. More recently, product focus has shifted towards a product‘s social, economic, and environmental concerns (sustainable products). While consumers admit they would buy sustainable products, this behavior is currently not occurring at the point of purchase. This research contributes to the existing literature by further exploring why a consumer‘s likelihood to purchase sustainable products is not translated into actual sales. Based on an extensive review of the extant literature a theoretical model was developed and tested using an online survey distributed to …

Essays On Motivating Investment, J. Reid Cummings Apr 2014

Essays On Motivating Investment, J. Reid Cummings

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

Essay 1

This research examines the relationship between Real Estate Investment Trusts‘ uses of the audit process to increase financial transparency, and their ability to attract and/or maintain reasonable access to capital investment. I find that capital investment is positively and significantly associated with three commonly used audit-related attributes: auditor quality (captured by higher audit fees), auditor specialization (captured by industry-audit specialization), and auditor reputation (captured by the audit firm being a Big 4 auditor). Moreover, I find the positive relationship between capital issuance and auditor fees remains after controlling for the financial crisis of 2007-2008. This positive association between …

How Many Stocks Are In The S&P500?, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Traditionally, the answer is 500, as the index was constructed using the 500 largest companies. However, Google's upcoming stock dividend will change all this. As of April 3, 2014, Google is undergoing a 2:1 split via a stock dividend, as owners of record will receive an additional share -- but of a different nonvoting class stock. This means that there will be two Google share classes being traded. To keep the value in place, the S&P will retain both share classes, meaning there will now be 501 stocks in the S&P500. The Status Of Women Leaders In Utah Education, Susan R. Madsen, Brian Fischer, D. Candice Backus Mar 2014

The Status Of Women Leaders In Utah Education, Susan R. Madsen, Brian Fischer, D. Candice Backus

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In September of 2013, the Center for American Progress released a report titled“ The State of Women in America: A 50- State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation.” The report ranked Utah last of all 50 states in terms of women holding positions of decision making and leadership. Because the focus was solely on the percentage of women in elected office and private sector management positions, we determined that a more detailed look at the status of women and leadership in various sectors within the state would be useful. This is the third of four 2014 briefs, …

Cultural Accountability For Business-Practice Differences And Beyond: A Comparative Study On Bank Loan Classification Between Japan And The Usa, Kanji Kitamura Mar 2014

Cultural Accountability For Business-Practice Differences And Beyond: A Comparative Study On Bank Loan Classification Between Japan And The Usa, Kanji Kitamura

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The aim of this interdisciplinary essay is to demonstrate locally shared senses of values (“cultural values”) as the root causes of the cross-national differences in business practice between Japan and the USA; in particular bank loan classification and its value-driven consequences. For this aim, it investigates three levels of bank lending; decision-making at an individual level, bank loan classification at an organisation level and aggregate bank loans at a national level. The essay first examines the historical debate in economic anthropology, with the focus on cultural values. The second part explores research-proven differences in individualism and collectivism. The third part …

Taken For Granted Or Taken With Gratitude? An Examination Of The Differential Effects Of Donations Of Time And Money On Consumers' Evaluation Of Corporate Philanthropy, Ryan Langan Mar 2014

Taken For Granted Or Taken With Gratitude? An Examination Of The Differential Effects Of Donations Of Time And Money On Consumers' Evaluation Of Corporate Philanthropy, Ryan Langan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the potential for two forms of corporate philanthropy, donations of time and money, to have differential effects on consumers' response to corporate giving. Drawing upon indirect-reciprocity theory I show that corporate donations of time compared to money elicit a greater desire to reciprocate on the part of consumers. It is found that the influence of corporate donations on consumers' desire to reciprocate occurs through serial mediation, whereby donations of time are perceived as being more effortful than monetary donations. This in turn leads to more altruistic motive attributions, and ultimately greater admiration towards the firm and a …
