Window To The Unbanked: The Potential Of Mobile Money As A Means Of Saving In Uganda, Allison Ryder
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The meaning of poverty is more than just merely the shortage of money. It is the lack of access to the instruments and means through which the poor could improve their lives. Many people lack appropriate means to manage their finances, which limits their economic potential and renders them vulnerable to exogenous shocks. Increasing financial inclusion to those without access contributes to poverty reduction by providing people with means to manage their finances. This study was conducted through a month long internship at the Bank of Uganda following with a short trip to Gulu, northern Uganda. The objective of this …

A Theoretical Model Of Directional Volume On Acquirer Stock In Cash Mergers, Mark W. Zikiye, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington
A Theoretical Model Of Directional Volume On Acquirer Stock In Cash Mergers, Mark W. Zikiye, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington
HCBE Faculty Articles
The acquisition of a target firm in a transaction financed by cash is a cash merger. Announcements of cash mergers release the positive signal that the acquirer possesses cash reserves. As stock prices rise, informed traders may obtain abnormal returns by purchasing call options, selling put options or purchasing stock. This paper constructs a theoretical model in which call buy volume forms the upper bound of the final stock price, put sell volume forms the lower bound of the final stock price and stock purchase volume reveals the final stock price.

Understanding Knowledge Management Software-Organisation Misalignments From An Institutional Perspective: A Case Study Of A Global It-Management Consultancy Firm, Khuong Le-Nguyen, G. Harindranath, Romano Dyerson
Business Faculty Publications
Inspired by the proposition that “Enterprise IS configurations chosen by the organisations will encodeinstitutionalised principles into these systems” (Gosain, 2004, p. 169), this study seeks to draw attentionto potential sources of misalignment between knowledge management (KM) software and the imple-menting organisation from an institutional theory perspective. Using a case of a global consultancy firm, the study elucidates such misalignments as the consequence of different institutional contexts wheretechnology developers and adopters operate. This study demonstrates how institutional forces affect theimplementation project and provides some lessons learned for organisations that are rich in high-valuetext-based knowledge for making decisions.
The Value Of Creating An Innovation Talent Pipeline, Britta Mckenna
The Value Of Creating An Innovation Talent Pipeline, Britta Mckenna
Publications & Research
Investing in the innovation pipeline today translates to Illinois business tomorrow. Somewhere between the rise of “STEM” and “staying globally competitive” in a time after Millennials is Generation Z. Gen Z digital natives are now making their way to and through primary and secondary education and we need to be ready to nurture the emerging talents of these and other future innovators. This is particularly important in Illinois where developing – and retaining – top talent will be a key driver of the state’s knowledge-based economy. There is hard work ahead reimagining what education should look like to support this …

Continuous Auditing: Technology Involved, Yohann Pierre Junior D. Aboa
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study will concentrate on the latest factor causing changes in the domain of accountancy: technological advances. With a great deal of creativity and ingenuity, accountants around the world were able to find solutions to one of the problems that arose: increased fraudulent behavior. These, at times, involved a level of technology that was still not fully understood by all its users. This paper is going to focus on one of the ways that technology was applied to react to these changes: continuous auditing and monitoring. The idea of continuously auditing/monitoring the events and transactions of companies is not a …

Issue Brief: Asset Management For Stormwater, New England Environmental Finance Center, Sustainable Communities Learning Network
Sustainable Communities Capacity Building
Asset management is a strategic approach to maintaining and sustaining infrastructure in order to meet the needs of the community at the lowest overall life cycle cost. This approach helps communities know how and where to prioritize limited funds in order to achieve the greatest benefit. Often applied to drinking water and wastewater infrastructure, this method is well suited to managing any assets, including stormwater systems.
This issue brief is intended to introduce local governments to the asset management process and to show how it can be applied in managing stormwater assets. It was adapted from an appendix written by …

Fostering Fair And Sustainable Marketing For Social Entrepreneurs In The Context Of Subsistence Marketplaces, Tina M. Facca-Miess, Nicholas J. C. Santos
Marketing Faculty Research and Publications
In recent years, in-depth, on-the-ground research has generated many insights into the nature and functioning of subsistence marketplaces and the people who operate in them. Such knowledge is bound to be useful to various companies and organisations, as they seek to engage such marketplaces, particularly for marketing managers, who quite likely have not had education or experience in marketing in such impoverished settings. This paper complements these practical insights with a normative ethical framework, presented in the marketing literature and labelled the integrative justice model (IJM) for impoverished markets, so as to synthesise a new framework for fair and sustainable …

Pay It Forward
The Greek playwrights wrote of the beautiful selfless concept of "paying it forward" as early as approximately 300 B.C. Later, Ben Franklin and Ralph Waldo Emerson also wrote of its honor. The actual phrase "pay it forward" likely was first penned by the author Lily Hardy Hammond in 1916.
Saying "thank you" to someone who gave you a gift of money or kindness, but who does not expect or even wish to be repaid, by returning the favor to someone else...thus "paying it forward"...is alive and well at IMSA. This issue of 360 showcases several acts of …

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: April 18, 2014, Eric Thompson, William Walstad, Shannon Mcclure, Mihdi Vahedi
Leading Economic Indicator Reports
The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) declined by 0.07% during March 2014. The slight decline in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, followed a solid increase in February. Together, results for the two months are consistent with moderate growth in the Nebraska economy during the summer of 2014. Among the components of the leading economic indicator, there was an increase in initial unemployent claims, suggesting a weakening of labor market conditions. At the same time, there was solid improvement in business expectations. Specifically, respondents to the Survey of Nebraska Business predicted …

From Altruism To Investment: Venture Philanthropy And Its Impact On Shared Governance At Liberal Arts Colleges, Joshua D. Merchant
Dissertations
Competition for philanthropic dollars has escalated in recent years, particularly in higher education. A new type of charitable giving – venture philanthropy – has emerged and is impacting both educational policy and practice. Venture philanthropy involves donors using business models, championed practices of venture capitalists, and decision making procedures to drive their philanthropy and ongoing engagement with organizations they support.
Venture philanthropy has the potential to improve the financial vitality of colleges and universities. However, it also poses significant questions to the academy as more colleges and universities engage with donors who embrace its tenets. The primary research question seeks …

Public & Community Service Studies Student Scholarship
Students participating in an Alternative Spring Break trip to Nicaragua in 2012 focused their exploration on coffee growing and production; they visited a Fair Trade grower, and became interested in developing a longer-term project. Simultaneously, the College’s School of Business began sponsoring an Entrepreneurship Society, while the Feinstein Institute for Public Service and the Smith Hill Community Development Corporation began convening an economic development incubator group as a project of the newly opened Providence College/Smith Hill Annex. These multiple interests coalesced as students, faculty and community came together to open Common Grounds Café.

Improving Saasi’S Knowledge Management Practices, Ximeng Chen
MPA Capstone Projects 2006 - 2015
Binghamton University’s Student Affairs Assessment and Strategic Initiatives (SAASI) is facing a variety of problems related to knowledge management (KM). Regarding explicit knowledge, SAASI has no universal format for documenting the analysis process and professional staff and student workers have different skill sets. Meanwhile it receives documents from other departments within Student Affairs Division and those data require a significant amount of time for SAASI to spend on reformatting to make it useable. Regarding tacit knowledge, since many of the student positions are on year appointments, there is a great deal of turnover in the department. The turnover influences the …

Why Real Leisure Really Matters: Incentive Effects On Real Effort In The Laboratory, Brice Corgnet, Roberto Hérnan-Gonzalez, Eric Schniter
ESI Publications
On-the-job leisure is a pervasive feature of the modern workplace. We studied its impact on work performance in a laboratory experiment by either allowing or restricting Internet access. We used a 2x2 experimental design in which subjects completing real-effort work tasks could earn cash according to either individual- or team-production incentive schemes. Under team pay, production levels were significantly lower when Internet browsing was available than when it was not. Under individual pay, however, no differences in production levels were observed between the treatment in which Internet was available and the treatment in which it was not. In line with …

A percentage of its total operating budget, Mill Street Loft's (MSL) individual donations have remained at 3 percent since 2011. MSL would like to launch new programs and expand program scholarship assistance but is unable to do so because of its small level of discretionary income. This study examines how MSL can enhance fundraising strategies to increase individual donations.
