The Advanced Course In Professional Selling, Terry W. Loe, Scott A. Inks Apr 2014

The Advanced Course In Professional Selling, Terry W. Loe, Scott A. Inks

Faculty Articles

More universities are incorporating sales content into their curriculums, and although the introductory courses in professional sales have much common ground and guidance from numerous professional selling texts, instructors teaching the advanced selling course lack the guidance provided by common academic tools and materials. The resulting potential variance in content and pedagogy in advanced selling courses makes comparing programs or assessing the relative preparedness of students coming from different universities challenging for recruiters, faculty, and students. A review of the syllabi of the instructors currently teaching the advanced selling course reveals common themes, content, and pedagogy that are helpful to …

Lease Accounting Convergence Project: What Are The Impacts Of The New Accounting Standards?, Kevin Jirik Apr 2014

Lease Accounting Convergence Project: What Are The Impacts Of The New Accounting Standards?, Kevin Jirik

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Current US GAAP lease accounting standards, with its four part test, and two forms of accounting for leases has existed since the 1970s. Due to cases such as WorldCom and Enron, where the assigning of other assets to remote bankruptcy entities has caused some of the world's largest bankruptcies and misleading financials. The SEC called for elimination of all off sheet financial arrangements to change the guidelines of financial reporting to better reflect the economic transaction and not distort it. The new proposal has created a Right-of-Use model where new assets and liabilities will be created to represent the value …

An Analysis Of International Corporate Tax Reform, Travis D. Gohman Apr 2014

An Analysis Of International Corporate Tax Reform, Travis D. Gohman

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

This research paper will focus on the current discussion in Washington D.C. regarding the reform of international taxation by the U.S. government. In recent years, multinational companies have been accumulating an ever-increasing amount of undistributed foreign earnings. Critics see this as a loophole to avoid U.S. taxation. Corporations view this as purely a smart business decision since it increases their bottom lines. The primary reason for this trend of not repatriating for foreign earnings is that the U.S. has the highest corporate tax rate of 35 percent. Therefore, with fewer foreign earnings making their way back into the U.S., the …

Capital Gains Tax And Its Effect On Investment, Andrew Long Apr 2014

Capital Gains Tax And Its Effect On Investment, Andrew Long

Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)

Recently, there has been controversy surrounding the capital gains tax. During his state of the union address, President Obama mentioned the case of Debbie Bosanek as a clear indication that the tax is unfair. Debbie is the secretary of Warren Buffet, and happens to pay fewer taxes than her boss. The primary reason for this is through capital gains. The tax rate on long-term capital gains (assets that have been held for over a year), is less than the tax on regular income, with most people paying about 15% on gains (the highest earners now pay 20%).

All Earnings Are Not The Same, Steven D. Dolvin Apr 2014

All Earnings Are Not The Same, Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Two companies in the same industry with the same earnings per share (EPS) may be quite different, particularly depending on how they report their earnings. For example, companies can choose different depreciation methods (e.g., straightline, accelerated, etc.) and inventory accounting approaches (e.g., LIFO, FIFO, etc.). However, while these choices all fall within generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and are relatively easy to reconcile, business also have many choices with regard to reported adjustments to earnings, which are more opaque. Click here for a recent article discussing the discrepancies.

Gopro Marketing Competition, Usu Jon M. Huntsman School Of Business

Jon M. Huntsman School of Business News Collection

I had no idea what to expect from my first marketing competition. I signed up anyway, thinking that this could lead to anew line on my resume, or maybe the opportunity to rub shoulders with other professionals in the marketing field. While both those things did happen, I can honestly say I am a better marketer because this is experience, and that alone is worth it.

Shadow It And Data Credibility: The Impact Of Shadow Systems In An Erp Environment, Noah Myers, Dr. David Wood Apr 2014

Shadow It And Data Credibility: The Impact Of Shadow Systems In An Erp Environment, Noah Myers, Dr. David Wood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In recent years, companies have increasingly turned to large software solutions known as ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems to centralize and streamline their accounting information systems. However, this centralization has caused tension with end users because of the system’s rigid structure and unfamiliarity to employees. While ERP’s are often implemented to enhance internal control procedures, in practice, users often circumvent the controls by removing data from the system and manipulating it separately in spreadsheet software. This practice has become commonly known as Shadow IT in the business press.

Ethical Consistency And Courage Scale, Matthew Moen, Dr. Brad Agle Apr 2014

Ethical Consistency And Courage Scale, Matthew Moen, Dr. Brad Agle

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Integrity matters. If a person says one thing and then does something else, then that person is being ethically inconsistent. If that same person is ethically inconsistent over time, then her/his moral performance will eventually suffer. If an organization is filled with ethically inconsistent employees, then that organization’s moral performance will also suffer over time. Sadly, examples of this fact are replete in the business world (e.g. Bear Stearns, Enron, Tyco, WorldCom). Thus, it’s important for business firms of all sizes to assess the ethical consistency of their current and future employees. Currently, there is no good measure of ethical …

Making The Magic: How Public Relations Is Handled At The Disney Parks, Elizabeth Demeo

Senior Honors Theses

The Walt Disney Company has always been an organization that has prided itself on its corporate image. One of their biggest successes has been their 11 theme parks across the globe. Ever since its creation in 1955, Disneyland has been known as "the happiest place on earth." However, many wonder how this reputation came to be and how it is being maintained today. To find this answer, one must look to the creative minds behind Disney's public relations. By examining the Disney parks and their public relations history, tactics, crisis management and current and future campaigns, companies can find out …

Major League Baseball's Antitrust Exemption And The Impact Of The Curt Flood Act, Gina Scalzo Apr 2014

Major League Baseball's Antitrust Exemption And The Impact Of The Curt Flood Act, Gina Scalzo

Senior Honors Theses

For many years, professional baseball has enjoyed a privileged antitrust exemption apart from other professional sports. With the passing of the Curt Flood Act in 1998 this exemption was removed; however, the act may not be as influential as it seems. Court rulings were prominent in initiating and maintaining the antitrust exemption for professional baseball. These include the Supreme Court Trilogy, especially the case of Curt Flood, a baseball player who fought against the reserve clause system which limited his and other players’ employment options. Collective bargaining as well as arbitration became dominant in professional baseball labor relations under the …

Reflections Magazine - A Promotional Magazine For Reflections Adoption Ministry, Kamryn Reynolds

Senior Honors Theses

For my senior honors thesis I have received permission to present a project along with its scholarly apparatus. I will be displaying ways to apply communications to ministry. The project will be a promotional magazine and informational materials. For the thesis I will include the magazine and a press release. I will be approaching some marketing techniques for a non-profit organization and assessing potential ways to reach the public. Many organizations are doing incredible work to fight social injustice and oftentimes few people understand the issues. I want to show how communication can revitalize ministry and get the word out …

The Effect Of Scarcity On Consumer Purchase Intentions, Jeremy Sanders, Stephanie Morgan Apr 2014

The Effect Of Scarcity On Consumer Purchase Intentions, Jeremy Sanders, Stephanie Morgan

Innovate UNO

Can placing time constraints on promotions result in increased consumer response? According to Brannon and Brock (2001), when consumers are aware of product scarcity, they are more likely to exhibit greater purchase intentions. Our goal is to test if scarcity positively influences consumer preference when consumers are informed that the product is available for a limited time only. We ran an experiment that involved 100 actual Starbucks consumers. We handed out two different sets of questionnaires at five different Starbucks stores in St. Tammany Parish and Orleans Parish. In the experimental condition, consumers learned that Pumpkin Spice Latte would be …

Walt Disney And The Propaganda Complex: Government Funded Animation And Hollywood Complicity During Wwii, Amanda Cunningham Apr 2014

Walt Disney And The Propaganda Complex: Government Funded Animation And Hollywood Complicity During Wwii, Amanda Cunningham

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Walt Disney’s work as an animator during World War II had a measurable impact on culture and in the development of government produced messages. It is important to examine this understudied area of Disney’s life and his studio’s efforts to produce wartime training and propaganda films during WWII. Government agencies, including the U.S. Treasury, contracted Disney to produce 32 animated shorts between 1941 and 1945 (Gabler, 2007).

Employing a semiotic approach of cinema, this study focuses on the cartoons The New Spirit (1942), Der Fuehrer’s Face (1943) and Education for Death: The Making of the Nazi (1943). While American wartime …

The Role Of Self Concept In Consumer Behavior, Marisa Toth

Graduate Research Symposium (2010 - 2017)

Understanding the processes that underlie consumer behavior has become an increasingly important area of research, especially for businesses and marketers. One of the most commonly studied variables believed to impact consumer behavior is self-concept.

The purpose of the current study is to examine the influence of self-concept in consumer behavior and identify factors that influence the relationship. Specifically, what is the relationship between different aspects of the self-concept and the consumption of publicly and privately consumed luxuries and necessities? Furthermore, how will this relationship be affected by the level of self-monitoring an individual displays?

The Status Of Women Leaders In Utah Businesses, Susan R. Madsen, D. Candice Backus, Glaucia Jones Apr 2014

The Status Of Women Leaders In Utah Businesses, Susan R. Madsen, D. Candice Backus, Glaucia Jones

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

In September 2013, the Center for American Progress released a report titled“ The State of Women in America: A 50- State Analysis of How Women Are Faring Across the Nation.” This report ranks Utah last of all 50 states in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership. Although the focus is solely on the percentage of women in elected office and private sector management positions, we feel that a more detailed look on the status of women in leadership in various sectors within the state is useful. This is the last of four 2014 briefs, each …

Tie Strength, Embeddedness, And Social Influence: A Large-Scale Networked Experiment, Sinan Aral, Dylan Walker Apr 2014

Tie Strength, Embeddedness, And Social Influence: A Large-Scale Networked Experiment, Sinan Aral, Dylan Walker

Business Faculty Articles and Research

We leverage the newly emerging business analytical capability to rapidly deploy and iterate large-scale, microlevel, in vivo randomized experiments to understand how social influence in networks impacts consumer demand. Understanding peer influence is critical to estimating product demand and diffusion, creating effective viral marketing, and designing “network interventions” to promote positive social change. But several statistical challenges make it difficult to econometrically identify peer influence in networks. Though some recent studies use experiments to identify influence, they have not investigated the social or structural conditions under which influence is strongest. By randomly manipulating messages sent by adopters of a Facebook …
