While Macau offers world class casinos, casino gaming is not legalized in Mainland China. Current media reports, however, indicate a growing interest by the Chinese government in establishing casinos in the Hainan Province. This study assesses the perceptions of residents about potential gaming development in their community. Resident attitude surveys have been used by planners and policymakers in order to gain local support for tourism projects and initiatives. A series of hypotheses were tested. Gravity models have been widely used in expanded gaming debates to persuade investors that proposed casinos will be financially successful and to persuade state and local government officials, as well as a skeptical public, of the economic and fiscal benefits of casino gaming. How did people learn to bet on sports and how did a sports betting culture develop in Finland? How has this setting evolved over space and time? The answers contribute to the growing understanding of learning, socialization, and contextualization in the study of gambling and may inspire service providers, regulators, and harm preventers alike. We argue that broad structural patterns and micro-cultural processes should be investigated jointly and qualitative information should complement quantitative monitoring of human behavior. In the first essay titled "Shareholder Coordination, Information Diffusion and Stock Returns", we show that the quality of information sharing networks linking firms' institutional investors has stock return predictability implications. First, we demonstrate that firms with high shareholder coordination experience less local comovement and less post earnings announcement drift, consistent with the notion that coordination improves firms' information environment. We then document that the stock return performance of firms with high shareholder coordination leads that of firms with low shareholder coordination, supporting the view that coordination acts as an information diffusion channel. Self-publishing in the United States has increased to between 50-75% of book titles published annually, facilitated by the popularity of ebooks and print-on-demand. Amazon.com and other companies have encouraged the trend by paying royalties and providing support to authors. This increase in self-published materials poses a new challenge for Universal Bibliographic Control (UBC). Today, UBC is much different in the age of information overload compared with the relative information scarcity before the arrival of the Internet. Libraries have nonetheless retained an interest in bibliographically controlling traditional books. Self-published books can be indistinguishable from trade publications but fall outside many of …

This paper investigates the key components of an intelligent web user interface to facilitate online investment as a novel approach to compensating for the impersonality of e-commerce. By analyzing challenges to online brokerage services and evaluating key criteria for a viable intelligence system, we develop a decision tree based intelligent web user interfaces model. The resulting intelligent model is intended to help online shoppers avoid common mistakes by means of implicit reasoning, flexible knowledge granularity, and effective reasoning-by-exception, which is significantly different from the traditional approaches that largely rely on assistance from remote control knowledge engines. Exploring Different Operationalizations Of Employee Engagement And Their Relationships With Workplace Stress And Burnout Among It Professionals In Community Hospitals, Paula E. Anthony-Mcmann

Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations

This study suggested that the relationships between workplace stress, burnout and employee engagement depend on how the construct of employee engagement is actually measured. The study's hypotheses predicted negative relationships between employee engagement and workplace stress and further predicted that burnout would play a mediating role in those negative relationships. However, it was predicted that even similarly conceptualized measures of employee engagement would expose different relationships with these variables suggesting that the selection of employee engagement measurement instruments is vital both to understanding different aspects of the construct and to its operationalization in practice.
