Adding To The Pedagogical Portfolio: Launching A Student Business In A Semester Course, Elizabeth A. Mccrea Jan 2013

Adding To The Pedagogical Portfolio: Launching A Student Business In A Semester Course, Elizabeth A. Mccrea

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Common pedagogical approaches to entrepreneurship education include business plan writing, case studies, consulting, and simulations. Yet, in effect, these learning vehicles are simply proxies for the venture launch process. Operating under the assumption that learning entrepreneurship is a complex endeavor best addressed by a portfolio of pedagogical techniques, some instructors have experimented with launching student businesses in addition to traditional approaches. The challenge is how to do this with inexperienced undergraduate students within the confines of a 15-week semester. Included in the article are an outline of the process, a qualitative assessment of student learning, and suggestions for further research.

Serendipity As A Strategic Advantage?, Nancy K. Napier, Quan Hoang Vuong

International Business Program

Who, over the age of 20, hasn't experienced a serendipitous event: unexpected information that yields some unintended but potential value later on? Sitting next to a stranger on a plane who becomes a business partner? Stumbling onto an article in a journal or newspaper that helps tackle a nagging problem? Creating a new drug by accident?

Organizational Culture, Performance, And Competitive Advantage: What Next?, Bianca Jochimsen, Nancy K. Napier Jan 2013

Organizational Culture, Performance, And Competitive Advantage: What Next?, Bianca Jochimsen, Nancy K. Napier

International Business Program

For over 20 years, beginning in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the topic of organizational culture has been a key area of interest for managers and scholars worldwide.1 Much of the literature has focused on defining the term “organizational culture,”2 and its relationship to an organization’s performance3 and competitive advantage.4 In particular, research has examined its importance, its links with other variables that may influence performance, and how managers can use corporate culture to create and build successful organizations. In this chapter, we present an overview of selected past research on organizational culture and how …

Investor Overconfidence And Option Trading, Han-Sheng Chen Jan 2013

Investor Overconfidence And Option Trading, Han-Sheng Chen

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

This study examines investor overconfidence theory in the options market. The theory suggests that investors who experience high returns become overconfident in their security valuation and trading skills, and therefore trade more often, even when the high returns are market wide. Given stock investors often trade in both stock and options market, I hypothesize similar patterns could be found in the options market as well. Controlling for market volatility and stock idiosyncratic risk, past market return is positively correlated with option trading turnover. In addition, past positive market return leads to higher call option turnover ratio and higher call-to-put ratio. …

A Management Dashboard Model For Supply Chain Cost Estimations, Brad Masters Jan 2013

A Management Dashboard Model For Supply Chain Cost Estimations, Brad Masters

Business Administration Dissertations - Archive

As many organizations are unable to alter existing accounting systems for an Activity Based-type costing requirement, a "Dashboard" Costing Model is proposed. The model will 1) empirically verify management assumptions regarding actual Supply Chain costs, 2) satisfy management's objectives for acceptable accuracy and simplicity and 3) contribute to the current body of research by providing alternative methods of estimating Supply Chain costs within the Transaction Cost Economics framework. Future studies can expand upon this costing methodology, and test its applicability with other organizations in other industries for accuracy improvement and refinement.

The Industrial Dynamics Of Order Rationing, Shortage Gaming, And Retail Promotions Demand Shock: A Discrete Event Simulation Experiment, Uio In Sara Liao-Troth

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This research investigates the impact of order rationing strategies, shortage gaming responses, and retail promotions demand shock on the long-term system performance of the inventory ordering and fulfillment process between competing retailers and a shared upstream manufacturer. The research addresses a need to understand the horizontal dynamics of competition for supply inventory among interconnected entities within business systems. It also expands understanding of the interactions between various manufacturer order rationing strategies and retailer shortage gaming responses, in the context of supply capacity constraints arising from a retail promotions demand shock.

A discrete event simulation based on a US major appliance …

The Impact Of Securitization On The Expansion Of Subprime Credit, Taylor Nadauld, Shane M. Sherlund Jan 2013

The Impact Of Securitization On The Expansion Of Subprime Credit, Taylor Nadauld, Shane M. Sherlund

Faculty Publications

This paper investigates the relationship between securitization activity and the extension of subprime credit. The analysis is motivated by two sets of compelling empirical facts. First, the origination of subprime mortgages exploded between the years 2003 and 2005. Second, the securitization of subprime loans increased substantially over the same time period, driven primarily by the five largest independent broker/dealer investment banks. We argue that the relative shift in the securitization activity of investment banks was driven by forces exogenous to factors impacting lending decisions in the primary mortgage market and resulted in lower ZIP code denial rates, higher subprime origination …

Service-Oriented Methodology For Systems Development, Mark Keith, Haluk Demirkan, Michael Goul Jan 2013

Service-Oriented Methodology For Systems Development, Mark Keith, Haluk Demirkan, Michael Goul

Faculty Publications

Despite advances in software development practices, organizations struggle to implement methodologies that match the risk in a project environment with needed coordination capabilities. Plan-driven and agile software development methodologies each have strengths and risks. However, most project environments cannot be classified as entirely “risky” or “stable,” suggesting the need for hybrid approaches. We leverage a design science approach to implement a novel hybrid methodology based on concepts from the service-oriented paradigm. We motivate the approach using theory on interdependence and coordination, and design the methodology using theory on modularity and service-dominant logic. We also examine the effects of its adoption …

Creating Business Value Through E-Marketplace Trading, Susan Standing Jan 2013

Creating Business Value Through E-Marketplace Trading, Susan Standing

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Electronic marketplaces (e-marketplaces) have been researched over many years from the study of electronic data interchange (EDI) systems to the current internet based trading platforms. Early e-marketplaces connected a buyer and supplier using proprietary systems that established a market hierarchy. The buyer was responsible for the system, established the terms of trade and the electronically enabled supplier could connect to the system. These systems were costly to build, which limited their use, and only organisations with an integrated system could use them. The web based e-marketplaces opened up the possibility of connecting many buyers and suppliers and enabling electronic transactions. …

The Governance Schema Of Regional And Rural Public Hospital Nurses: How Relevant Are The Dimensions Of Stewardship Governance And Trust In Management?, Kim Clark Jan 2013

The Governance Schema Of Regional And Rural Public Hospital Nurses: How Relevant Are The Dimensions Of Stewardship Governance And Trust In Management?, Kim Clark

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study broadly pertained to the issue of public health sector governance. The field of healthcare governance had been characterised as having challenges of greater intricacy and sensitivity than those found in any other sector (Philippon & Braithwaite, 2008). While increasingly regarded as important to health system performance, governance had, however, been evaluated as poorly understood in conceptual and practical terms and subject to competing ideas regarding its role and challenges (Brinkerhoff & Bossert, 2013). Specifically, the thesis elucidated frontline regional and rural hospital nurses’ cognitive schema of strategic aspects of governance practice of managers in the Western Australian Country …

Uncertain Congestion Games With Assorted Human Agent Populations , Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng Jan 2013

Uncertain Congestion Games With Assorted Human Agent Populations , Pradeep Reddy Varakantham, Asrar Ahmed, Shih-Fen Cheng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Congestion games model a wide variety of real-world resource congestion problems, such as selfish network routing, traffic route guidance in congested areas, taxi fleet optimization and crowd movement in busy areas. However, existing research in congestion games assumes: (a) deterministic movement of agents between resources; and (b) perfect rationality (i.e. maximizing their own expected value) of all agents. Such assumptions are not reasonable in dynamic domains where decision support has to be provided to humans. For instance, in optimizing the performance of a taxi fleet serving a city, movement of taxis can be involuntary or nondeterministic (decided by the specific …

Kroc Fit Kids Needs Assessment, Brandon Dotts, Jason Jarvinen, Maria Todaro, Morgan Wilson

Program Design and Evaluation

The Salvation Army Kroc Center, a 12.4-acre family support, education, recreation, and cultural arts center located in the Rolando neighborhood of San Diego, is interested in designing an intervention program to alleviate the issue of low levels of physical activity and combat the childhood obesity problem. The Kroc Center is well suited to designing such an intervention because it works closely with six partner elementary schools in its surrounding neighborhoods. To assist the Kroc Center in developing an intervention, this needs assessment examines factors that may lead to low fitness scores, and the potential dangers to students, and the community, …

An Investigation Into Recent Developments In The Regulatory Regime For Financial Accounting In Ireland, Mark James Jan 2013

An Investigation Into Recent Developments In The Regulatory Regime For Financial Accounting In Ireland, Mark James

Theses

In the last decade the Irish accounting regulatory regime has been radically reformed from one consisting largely of private sector regulation to one where public sector regulation has increased importance. This change has taken place within a larger international context of the rise of the regulatory state, and a period of greater convergence between regulatory activities internationally. While an extensive body of research on this topic has accumulated in other countries, particularly America, Irish research has generally been focussed on the role of the accounting profession in this development. This study aims to build on the existing literature by focusing …

Driving Employee Engagement Through Internal Communication; A Public Relations Perspective: A Case Study Of Cork Institute Of Technology, Ireland., Desmond P. Carroll Jan 2013

Driving Employee Engagement Through Internal Communication; A Public Relations Perspective: A Case Study Of Cork Institute Of Technology, Ireland., Desmond P. Carroll

Theses

This study is concerned with the important role of internal communication (IC) as a driver of employee engagement and investigates how public relations (PR) might be best placed to advise on and oversee a system of managed or strategic communication within an organisation.

The literature reveals that a communications culture must pervade an organisation for effective communication to take place. Whilst early models leaned towards a predominant one-way transmission of communication, we are now witnessing a paradigm shift to a horizontal two-way system of communication and engagement.

The research methodology employed in this study was a qualitative case study which …

Efektywność Instrumentów Płatniczych W Polsce, Jakub Górka

Monografie/Monographs

Niniejsza monografia wpisuje się w tematykę badań nad społeczeństwem bezgotówkowym. W ostatnich latach podejmowano w Polsce próby stworzenia programu rozwoju obrotu bezgotówkowego, którego właściwe wdrożenie miało przyspieszyć proces zmiany zwyczajów płatniczych w naszym kraju i upowszechnić obrót bezgotówkowy. Idea takiego programu narodziła się w 2007 roku, a obecnie mają miejsce prace nad jego drugą wersją. Będąc uczestnikiem prac nad obiema wersjami autor w pracy dyskontuje zdobytą wiedzę i doświadczenie do wyciągania wniosków o charakterze zarządczym. Publikacja dotyczy przede wszystkim rynku polskiego.

Informatyka @ Przyszłości, Witold Chmielarz, Jerzy Kisielnicki, Tomasz Parys

Monografie/Monographs
