BATS and Direct Edge, two large electronic exchanges, are merging to form the second largest exchange operator in the United States, taking over the ranking currently held by Nasdaq. This change exhibits the transformation of the industry toward electronic trading. While electronic increases speed and likely lowers trading costs, it doesn't come without risks, as the recent Nasdaq outage illustrates. See article here, Wall Street Journal.

Manuscript Collection Finding Aids
Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 2764. Letters of Herbert C. Thorpe, General Manager and Assistant Treasurer, United States Gas, Coal, and Coke Company, to his wife and father. Writing from Sturgis and Paducah soon after his arrival in Kentucky from New Jersey, Thorpe describes the stresses of his new management responsibilities and the challenges to the company in the event of a miners’ strike, and criticizes the work ethic of the miners. Thorpe died in Paducah of typhoid fever on 31 July 1904.

My ORCA project is primarily focused on organizational learning. I am working closely with Peter Madsen, my mentor, to gather data and find supporting literature. Our hypothesis is that strategic focus will increase the rate at which organizations learn. In a nuclear power plant, this can be measured by the number of delays for maintenance that occur in a plant. We hypothesize that organizations that operate in a narrowly defined domain will learn faster than other companies in that domain, even if they have the same level of aggregate experience. Investors, economists and financial analysts are constantly seeking to develop models that may help them learn what the stock market will do and how it functions. They do this so that they may take advantage of any market anomalies as soon as they appear and try to make “easy money.” Various pricing models (see Sharpe (1964), Litner (1965) and Fama and French (1993) for example1) have been and continue to be constructed that try to predict returns, and variables suspected to be correlated with returns have been included in these models in an attempt to determine specific predictors of returns.

“Working To Put Food On The Table”: Fractured Identities And Mission Drift In A South African Nonprofit Organization, Eric C. Darsow, Dr. Christopher Meek, Dr. Warner Woodworth

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) face a tradeoff between activities which further their mission and those which generate revenue to pay salaries and bills. For many NPOs, management’s increasing attention to cash flow suppresses the organization’s service-oriented mission and alienates staff. This ORCA grant funded a case study of this phenomenon at RSEF, a small development NPO in South Africa. I use organizational identity theory to explore ways in which a loss of mission focus affects how staff identify with their work, and how decreased identification impacts the organization’s ability to serve society. My interest in financial literacy and my decision to pursue an ORCA grant in this subject began in the fall of 2007. Many remember the upheaval that devastated financial markets beginning at this time. This upheaval is not just a memory because similar economic and financial conditions continue to this day. As a casual observer of this crisis as shown on the news, I began to think. I began to think about my own finances, saving for retirement, taxes, and the job market. The focus of my research was to observe the process of economic development at the grassroots level in Southern Africa. In Capetown, South Africa I found an organization that was working closely with marginalized youth in the townships and squatters camps. The Center For Opportunity Development (COD) works with youth, (ages 18-35), teaching business skills. The Center For Opportunity Development had just changed to a new approach of more practical learning when I joined with them. The Process Of Social Media Migration Among Young Professionals: A Grounded Theory, Maria Hermosa, Frauke Hachtmann

The purpose of this study was to develop a theory that explains the process of social media migration among young professionals. The theoretical propositions that emerged from this qualitative study explain how different causal, intervening, and contextual conditions interact with and affect the phenomenon of social media migration. Internal and external pressures have an effect on young professionals’ decision to join new social media sites while abandoning others. Intervening and contextual conditions provide specific circumstances in which social media migration might occur. Integrating useful and organizational features to ease the use of social networks were important strategies in the process …
