Pricing And Local-Content Decisions Of A Multinational Firm In A Duopoly Market, Nanqin Liu Aug 2013

Pricing And Local-Content Decisions Of A Multinational Firm In A Duopoly Market, Nanqin Liu

Lingnan Theses

The internationalization of production requires each multinational firm to determine the local content rate for his product that is made and sold in a foreign country. In this thesis, we investigate the local content rate and pricing decisions for a multinational firm who competes with a local firm in a market without and with a local content requirement (LCR). We develop and solve a two-stage decision problem in which the multinational firm determines his optimal local content rate and the two firms then make their pricing decisions. Our analytical results show that the multinational firm sets a lower local content …

How Does Asymmetric Information Relate To Investment Efficiency? Evidence From Analysts' Earnings Forecasts And Daily Stock Trading, Lingmin Xie Aug 2013

How Does Asymmetric Information Relate To Investment Efficiency? Evidence From Analysts' Earnings Forecasts And Daily Stock Trading, Lingmin Xie

Lingnan Theses

The adverse selection and agency cost theories suggest that the informational transparency of a firm can help to reduce over- or under-investment. This thesis examines how information asymmetry influences firm-level investment efficiency for companies listed in the U.S. market from 1993 to 2009. Information asymmetry is measured by the dispersion and error of the earnings forecasts made by financial analysts. I investigate how information asymmetry affects firms’ proneness to overor under-invest and the firms’ deviations from the investment levels predicted by investment opportunities. To be consistent with the prior literature, I also use the volatility of daily stock returns and …

Institutional Stock Ownership And Corproate Dividend Policy : Evidence From China, Jianghua Shen Aug 2013

Institutional Stock Ownership And Corproate Dividend Policy : Evidence From China, Jianghua Shen

Lingnan Theses

Agency theory suggests that institutional stockholders are able to influence the dividend policies of listed firms with the underlying objective of reducing a firm’s agency costs. This study explores the causal effects of institutional ownership on dividend policies for the firms listed in China. Using various measures of institutional ownership and dividend policy, I find that mutual fund ownership in a firm causes it to pay out more cash dividends or to initiate cash dividends. These effects are mainly evident in the firms controlled by the state and regional governments and those with relatively high free cash flows. The effects …

Even Adults Like "Happy Meals", Steven D. Dolvin

All Chapters

Higher risk companies, in order to sell bonds at lower interest rates, must often attach "sweetners" to the bond offering. Historically this has included warrants or conversion options. Recently, however, some companies have offered a combination of bonds and a loan of the company's shares, a so-called "Happy Meal." The bond buyers subsequently sell the shares short. If the company fails, the investors lose on the bonds, but make a profit on the short sale. This strategy is typically employed by hedge funds. See article here, Wall Street Journal.

Innovation As Determining Factor Of Post-M&A Performance: The Case Of Vietnam, Quan Hoang Vuong, Nancy K. Napier, Donaldine E. Samson Aug 2013

Innovation As Determining Factor Of Post-M&A Performance: The Case Of Vietnam, Quan Hoang Vuong, Nancy K. Napier, Donaldine E. Samson

International Business Program

This research aims to communicate new results of empirical investigations to learn about the relationship between determination of controlling an acquired firm’s capital, assets and brand versus its capability of innovation and ex post performance of Vietnam’s M&A industry in the 2005-2012 period. The analysis employs a categorical data sample, consisting of 212 M&A cases, and performs a number of logistic regressions with significant results being reported on relationships between pre-M&A strategic pursuit of innovation (versus capital/physical assets) of the acquired and post-M&A performance. In addition, pre-M&A capital expenditures tend to cause poor post-M&A performance. As a general conclusion, this …

A Categorical Data Analysis On Financial Failures In Vietnam, 2007-2013, Quan Hoang Vuong, Nancy K. Napier, Tri Dung Tran, Hong Kong T. Nguyen

International Business Program

In this paper, we examined 256 cases of financial failure and fraud occuring during the recent Vietnam’s chaotic years from 2007 to 2013, employing methods of categorical data analysis. Reported results suggest that the rent-seeking approach, or resource-based orientation, alone does not help explain the outcome of a business intention while the association between Orientation and Approach is the best-fit predictor. Rampant financial collapse not only increases the cost of funds but also erodes trust in the economy. Entrepreneurship development and creativity capacity building are necessary to improve socio-economic conditions and the environment. This work also introduces intuitive and cognitive …

Max Brooks’ 2006 novel, World War Z: An oral history of the zombie war presents an account of life in a post-apocalyptic world, from the perspective of those who lived through the experience. In the world [earth] of which Brooks speaks, there are people who, whether by personal preparedness, or pure chance, survived the apocalypse unscathed, and there are also those less fortunate, who were infected. The infected are in effect, reanimated corpses; referred to as Zed Heads (Zed, British for the letter Z), or, perhaps more familiar, ZOMBIES! The term zombie according to Brooks (2003) is “an animated corpse …

P/E Ratios, Steven D. Dolvin

Most investors know that the PE multiple is the ratio of price to earnings. While the market price is easy to agree upon, the earnings number that should be used in the ratio is not. Some investors prefer historical earnings, while others focus on forecasted earnings. Each of these approaches can provide widely different PE estimates, making comparison difficult. .

Encouraging Entrepreneurship: Microfinance, Knowledge Support, And The Costs Of Operating In Institutional Voids, Subrata Chakrabarty, A. Erin Bass

Marketing and Management Faculty Publications

This study focuses on the supplemented strategies of microfinance institutions (MFIs), in which the MFI offers nonfinancial services, such as entrepreneurship related knowledge, in addition to financial services to impoverished borrowers at the bottom of the pyramid (BoP). We examine two contextual factors–foreign direct investment (FDI) and loan defaults–to better understand the relationship between providing knowledge support to encourage entrepreneurship and costs of operating at the BoP for MFIs. In contexts where FDI is low and loan defaults are high, providing knowledge support to encourage entrepreneurship aggravates the MFI's costs of operating at the BoP. However, in contexts where FDI …

Anterior Pelvic Tilt As A Predictor For Hamstring Injury, Rachel Ploor Aug 2013

Anterior Pelvic Tilt As A Predictor For Hamstring Injury, Rachel Ploor

Student Theses and Dissertations

Hamstring injuries are a common occurrence in athletics and result in a significant amount of time lost from training and competition. Many factors have previously been proposed that may have the potential to increase an individuals' susceptibility of sustaining a hamstring injury including fatigue, flexibility, strength, and anterior pelvic tilt. Anterior pelvic tilt was correlated with the hamstrings to quadriceps ratio at the knee and hip. Eight, Division I track and field athletes were assessed for anterior pelvic tilt and hamstrings to quadriceps ratio at the knee and hip. Over the course of the season, none of the participants sustained …

This thesis shows that the microcredit movement=s fixation on reaching financial self-sustainability is causing microfinance institutions to cease to achieve important objectives, namely: 1) reaching the poorest of the poor, and 2) providing bank members with social benefits.

Nebraska Monthly Economic Indicators: August 16, 2013, Eric Thompson, William Walstad, Shannon Mcclure, Mihdi Vahedi

Leading Economic Indicator Reports

The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) fell by 1.05% during July 2013. The decline in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, reverses a strong increase in June, and signals that Nebraska will be unable to sustain rapid economic growth. Taken together, results for the past two months indicate that economic growth will be modest at the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014. Components of the leading indicator showed few signs of growth during July. In particular, five of the six components of the leading indicator fell during the month. …

Evaluating An Entrepreneurial Opportunity Through A Business Plan, Tyler L. Baldwin, Dr. Hal Heaton Aug 2013

Evaluating An Entrepreneurial Opportunity Through A Business Plan, Tyler L. Baldwin, Dr. Hal Heaton

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The American dream consists of having a nice home, a good job, and a family with 2.4 children. Many even dream of being the master of their own destiny by having a business of their own. Some people say all they need is a good idea to start a business. However, turning this kernel of thought from an idea into a reality is more difficult than most people realize. My creative research project consisted of evaluating an entrepreneurial opportunity of a crepery (a restaurant specializing in dinner and dessert crepes) and determining whether or not it could become a successful …

Establishing A Foundation For The Testing And Evaluation Of Effective Scenario Elicitation Tools, Benjamin Dunford, Dr. Douglas Dean

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In system development, no other phase is as fraught with difficulties as determining what exactly the system “should do” for a proposed project. These difficulties arise through a divergence in how the end user envisions the system should operate and how the analyst or developer perceives the user would like the system to operate. The search for a common language that both analyst and end user could use to effectively communicate what a system “should do”, or the system requirements, gave rise to the use of scenarios. Scenarios are textual narratives of how the system should operate in a given …

Software Development In Monterrey, Mexico, J. Edgar Gómez, Dr. Robert Jackson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As Mexican companies enter the global market they discover how important it is to integrate advances in technology into their everyday business transactions. Software development is one of the areas of technological advances where great effort has been made. According to the Wall Street Journal (1), changes in technological development in Mexico are due in large part to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States and Canada, that has attracted large amounts of foreign direct investment (FDI).
