Alternative Predictors For Dealing With The Diversity-Validity Dilemma In Personnel Selection: The Constructed Response Multimedia Test, Britt De Soete, Filip Lievens, Janneke Oostrom, Lena Westerveld
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In the context of the diversity-validity dilemma in personnel selection, the present field study compared ethnic subgroup differences on an innovative constructed response multimedia test to other commonly used selection instruments. Applicants (N=245, 27% ethnic minorities) for entry-level police jobs completed a constructed response multimedia test, cognitive ability test, language proficiency test, personality inventory, structured interview, and role play. Results demonstrated minor ethnic subgroup differences on constructed response multimedia test scores as compared to other instruments. Constructed response multimedia test scores were related to the selection decision, and no evidence for predictive bias was found. Subgroup differences were also examined …

Considerable evidence suggests that how candidates react to selection procedures can affect their test performance and their attitudes toward the hiring organization (e.g., recommending the firm to others). However, very few studies of candidate reactions have examined one of the outcomes organizations care most about: job performance. We attempt to address this gap by developing and testing a conceptual framework that delineates whether and how candidate reactions might influence job performance. We accomplish this objective using data from 4 studies (total N = 6,480), 6 selection procedures (personality tests, job knowledge tests, cognitive ability tests, work samples, situational judgment tests, …
Changing Things Up In Recruitment: Effects Of A 'Strange' Recruitment Medium On Applicant Pool Quantity And Quality, Saartje Cromheecke, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens
Changing Things Up In Recruitment: Effects Of A 'Strange' Recruitment Medium On Applicant Pool Quantity And Quality, Saartje Cromheecke, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In a field experiment, we investigated the impact of a 'strange' recruitment medium on the quantity and quality of the applicant pool. Recruiting through an unusual medium (i.e., postcard) was associated with higher applicant pool quantity, as compared to a more frequently used medium (i.e., e-mail). With respect to quality, applicants recruited through the strange medium were higher educated. A follow-up questionnaire confirmed that the media were perceived to differ in strangeness, not in media richness or credibility. These results suggest that 'changing things up' in recruitment by employing strange recruitment media can positively affect key recruitment outcomes.
Managerial Incentives And Management Forecast Precision, Qiang Cheng, Ting Luo, Heng Yue
Managerial Incentives And Management Forecast Precision, Qiang Cheng, Ting Luo, Heng Yue
Research Collection School Of Accountancy
Managers have great discretion in determining forecast characteristics, but little is known about how managerial incentives affect these characteristics. This paper examines whether managers strategically choose forecast precision for self-serving purposes. Building on the prior finding that the market reaction to vague forecasts is weaker than its reaction to precise forecasts, we find that for management forecasts disclosed before insider sales, more positive (negative) news forecasts are more (less) precise than other management forecasts. The opposite applies to management forecasts disclosed before insider purchases. These results are consistent with managers strategically choosing forecast precision to increase stock prices before insider …

Science and Technology Parks are in the business of providing services to their tenants, a mix of large companies, Small and Medium Enterprises and startups. The service needs of each of these types of companies will be different. The quality of services can be improved by understanding the needs of the tenants both, prior to building the Science and Technology Parks as well as on an ongoing basis. It then proceeds to discuss how the Service Innovation framework could be applied to …

In modern society, more and more people are suffering from some type of stress. Monitoring and timely detecting of stress level will be very valuable for the person to take counter measures. In this paper, we investigate the use of decision analytics methodologies to detect stress. We present a new feature selection method based on the principal component analysis (PCA), compare three feature selection methods, and evaluate five information fusion methods for stress detection. A driving stress data set created by the MIT Media lab is used to evaluate the relative performance of these methods. Our study show that the …

Properly Improving Employee Attitudes Through Hr Programs And Recognition Practices, Jonathan Degraff, Dr. John Bingham
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Employers seek to enhance employee dedication and increase company productivity while controlling operating costs; hence, companies have recently been investing more in human resource (HR) programs and recognition practices. The honors thesis I recently completed at Brigham Young University sought to augment practioners’ and academicians’ knowledge about HR programs and recognition practices by evaluating their respective effects on employee attitudes. This report will review the methods and findings of my project, as well as explain how I used the ORCA Grant to achieve my goals.

Managing Organizational Identity: Government Dependency And Organizational Mission In South African: Social Development Nonprofits, Eric Darsow, Dr. Warner Woodworth
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Many nonprofit organizations in South Africa sacrifice their autonomy and mission focus in exchange for the secure funding source of government service provision. The purpose of this project was to investigate and develop management techniques whereby nonprofit organizations in South Africa can effectively serve as both government watch dogs and quality government services providers. Since nonprofit organizations are critical components of the social services infrastructure in South Africa, investigating ways to maximize their impact on target communities while still creating an invigorating and meaningful work environment can have significant positive impact on society. I collected field data in East London, …

An Empirical Analysis Of Healthcare Ipos And Seos, Jonathan Holloway, Dr. James C. Brau
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Overall, three phenomena exist in corporate equity issuances. These phenomena include hotissue markets, first-day underpricing, and poor long-run performance. Hot-issue markets refer to fluctuation in the volume of issuances. Hot waves are periods of high issuance volume, and cold waves are periods of low volume. The second phenomenon, first-day underpricing, results in the initial price of equity beginning lower than its first-day closing price. The third phenomenon, poor long-run performance, refers to the tendency of issuances to underperform during a period beginning the day after the issuance and ranging from one to five years.

The Impact Of Unionization On University Performance: A Cross-Sectional Time Series Analysis, Mark K. Cassell
The Impact Of Unionization On University Performance: A Cross-Sectional Time Series Analysis, Mark K. Cassell
Journal of Collective Bargaining in the Academy
In 1968 the union movement in higher education was launched on the CUNY campuses in New York when CUNY held the first academic labor union election on an “integrated, heterogeneous, multi-campus system” (Ladd and Lipset 1973). In the nearly five decades since that historic election, unionization has grown to cover more than a third of all public four-year institutions and 40 percent of faculty at those public institutions (see Figure 1). While unionization is more common at larger institutions, Figure 1 illustrates that even among the smallest public institutions, unionization has increased over time.

The Effects Of Inflation On Businesses In Brazil, Brian Morgan, Dr. Lee Radebaugh
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The grant I received has helped me write an honors thesis entitled, “The Effects of Inflation on Businesses in Brazil.” For many years now, Brazil has been plagued with high levels of inflation. Although small amounts of inflation can help an economy grow, inflation in Brazil has often exceeded such small amounts. Now, a new economic plan has been introduced which has cut inflation dramatically. My honors thesis focused on the effects of the constantly changing economic environment on businesses within Brazil.

Family Histories And Genealogies Over The Internet: What Is Now Available, Thomas O. Meservy, Dr. Rayman D. Meservy
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The objective of my research is to determine how to effectively organize and distribute family histories and genealogies over the Internet. I am interfacing the genealogical files using the PAF standard, which was produced by the LDS church, onto the Internet. The information and standards which are available on the Internet are being combined with the most effective method of producing a user-friendly front end to provide an ideal system for genealogical exchange, distribution, and collaboration.
