Taking The Points: The Socialization Process Of A Sports Book “Regular”, Frederick W. Krauss Ph.D.

Occasional Papers

Patrons of a casino sports book use the environment for much more than the instrumental task of sports betting. It is also a place to congregate with other like-minded patrons and through this process complex interactional dynamics develop over time. The social world of the sports book emerges in a designated space for the betting act where patrons meet, interact, and establish a culture to which they adhere.

Envisioning Nevada’S Future: Goals & Strategies For Advancing Our Quality Of Life, Nevada Vision Stakeholder Group, Moody’S Analytics Sep 2010

Envisioning Nevada’S Future: Goals & Strategies For Advancing Our Quality Of Life, Nevada Vision Stakeholder Group, Moody’S Analytics

Brookings Mountain West Publications

Nevada’s severe downturn has brought to light many of the long-term challenges facing the state. Not only is its economy subject to painful swings, but Nevada’s primary drivers— consumer services (primarily gaming, hospitality and housing) and resource extraction—will provide less support than they have in past business cycles. Less economic vitality will make it harder to offer Nevadans the quality of life they expect.

The importance of the economy to quality of life is equally clear—quality of life is a hollow promise without a healthy and supportive economy. Similarly, a proper fiscal structure—both in terms of spending and revenues—is critical …

Green Power Marketing In The United States: A Status Report (2009 Data), Lori Bird, Jenny Sumner Sep 2010

Green Power Marketing In The United States: A Status Report (2009 Data), Lori Bird, Jenny Sumner

Publications (E)

This report documents green power marketing activities and trends in the United States. Aggregate green power sales data for all voluntary purchase markets across the United States are presented for 2009. The data presented in this report are based primarily on figures provided to NREL by utilities and independent renewable energy marketers. Because data cannot be obtained from all market participants, the estimates presented here likely represent an underestimate of the market size. Key trends identified in this year’s report include:
• In 2009, total retail sales of renewable energy in voluntary markets exceeded 30 million MWh, an increase of …

Monitoring Inventory Accuracy With Statistical Process Control, Kyle Huschka, John R. English, Todd Easton, Andrew Huschka Sep 2010

Monitoring Inventory Accuracy With Statistical Process Control, Kyle Huschka, John R. English, Todd Easton, Andrew Huschka

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

Inventory accuracy is critical in most industrial environments such as distribution, warehousing, and retail. Many companies use a technique called cycle counting and have realized outstanding results in monitoring and improving inventory accuracy. The time and resources to complete cycle counting are sometimes limited or not available. In this work, we promote statistical process control (SPC) to monitor inventory accuracy. Specifically, we model the complex underlying environments with mixture distributions to demonstrate sampling from a mixed but stationary process. For our particular application, we concern ourselves with data that result from inventory adjustments at the stock keeping unit (SKU) level …

A Real-Time Picking And Sorting System In E-Commerce Distribution Centers, Yeming Gong, Erik M. M. Winands, Rene B. M. De Koster Sep 2010

A Real-Time Picking And Sorting System In E-Commerce Distribution Centers, Yeming Gong, Erik M. M. Winands, Rene B. M. De Koster

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

Order fulfillment is the most expensive and critical operation for companies engaged in e-commerce. E-commerce distribution centers must rapidly organize the picking and sorting processes during and after the transaction has taken place, with the ongoing need to create greater responsiveness to customers. Sorting brings a relatively large setup time, which cannot be well admitted by existing polling models. We build a new stochastic polling model to describe and analyze such systems, and provide approximate explicit expressions for the complete distribution of order line waiting time for polling-based order picking systems and test their accuracy. These expressions lend themselves for …

Investigating Possible Synergies In Intermodal Operations With Truck And Rail, G. Don Taylor, Mia K. Burns, Gary L. Whicker Sep 2010

Investigating Possible Synergies In Intermodal Operations With Truck And Rail, G. Don Taylor, Mia K. Burns, Gary L. Whicker

11th IMHRC Proceedings (Milwaukee, Wisconsin. USA – 2010)

As the trucking industry continues to examine ways to provide better service at lower cost, many companies are more heavily utilizing intermodal (IM) strategies between truck and rail, especially for those loads that are relatively non-critical in terms of delivery time requirements and that have longer lengths of haul. As IM business grows, supporting dray infrastructure naturally develops around IM rail yards. What is unknown is whether it is best to have a dedicated set of drivers performing dray operations or if efficiency and cost savings can result when utilizing a joint driving fleet to concurrently support IM and traditionally …

How Arrogant Are Sales And Marketing Professionals: Perceptions Of Business Students, Art Weinstein, Margaret Britt, Joseph Balloun, Perry Haan

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Arrogance is a problem in business and other sectors of American society. This multi-university study assessed more than 500 business students’ perceptions of arrogance in sales and marketing environments. It also probed the arrogance issue in 12 other professions (five business-related and seven non-business occupations). Sales professionals were perceived as being more arrogant than marketers. Gender, ethnicity, and school type were found to be predictors of arrogance in marketing positions. Overall, sales were in the middle-of-thepack with respect to perceived arrogance (several professions were more arrogant and several professions were less arrogant), while marketers were considered relatively nonarrogant. Implications of …

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Criss Library conducted the ClimateQUAL survey during the 2009 fall semester. The library had been experiencing numerous changes due to a three year library renovation, several personnel resignations and library reorganizations. There was an over-riding perception of mistrust, fear and uncertainty that needed to be addressed. Our first step in addressing the negative perceptions was to run the ClimateQUAL survey to gather statistics for a better understanding of staff perceptions. Our next step was to report on the ClimateQUAL data to the library staff and start discussions on goals and solutions for addressing the organization climate. The third step was …

Selecting Predictor Subsets: Considering Validity And Adverse Impact, Wilfred De Corte, Paul Sackett, Filip Lievens Sep 2010

Selecting Predictor Subsets: Considering Validity And Adverse Impact, Wilfred De Corte, Paul Sackett, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The paper proposes a procedure for designing Pareto-optimal selection systems considering validity, adverse impact and constraints on the number of predictors from a larger subset that can be included in an operational selection system. The procedure determines Pareto-optimal composites of a given maximum size thereby solving the dual task of identifying the predictors that will be included in the reduced set and determining the weights with which the retained predictors will be combined to the composite predictor. Compared with earlier proposals, the simultaneous consideration of both tasks makes it possible to combine several strategies for reducing adverse impact in a …

Investing Into The Abyss: The Continued Misclassification Of Multi-Sector Managed Funds, John R Watson, N. Allen, Kok Fai Phoon, J. Wickramanayake

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The objective of this paper is to assess whether Australian multi-sector managed funds are misclassified, and then, having found this to be the case, determine if this misclassification has any impact on fund performance. We adopt a strong form of returns based style analysis to investigate a monthly sample of Australian multi-sector funds over the five-year sample period 2003:04-2008:03. The evidence provided demonstrates that insufficient attention has been paid as to whether fund managers are able to keep within their tactical asset allocation ranges and presents that misclassification exist for Australian multi-sector managed funds but that the effect on fund …

Obtaining Intangible And Tangible Benefits From Corporate Social Responsibility, Wei Nurn Chong, Gilbert Tan Sep 2010

Obtaining Intangible And Tangible Benefits From Corporate Social Responsibility, Wei Nurn Chong, Gilbert Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The relationship between corporate social responsibility (CSR) and corporate financial performance has been heavily studied in past research. However, little theory has been developed on how CSR may lead to greater corporate financial performance. In this paper, the authors attempt to fill this theoretical gap by explaining how CSR leads to the tangible benefits of attracting better employees, reduced turnover rate, greater efficiency, and reduced operating costs, via the intangible benefits of firm reputation, organizational commitment, and learning. Thereafter, managerial implications and further research opportunities are discussed.

Investor Inattention And The Underreaction To Stock Recommendations, Roger Loh Sep 2010

Investor Inattention And The Underreaction To Stock Recommendations, Roger Loh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Investors’ reaction to stock recommendations is often incomplete so that there is a predictable post-recommendation drift. I investigate investor inattention as a plausible explanation for this drift by using prior turnover as a proxy for attention. I find that low attention stocks react less to stock recommendations than high attention stocks around the three-day event window. Subsequently, the recommendation drift of firms with low attention is more than double in magnitude when compared to firms with high attention. Similar conclusions are reached with alternative proxies for attention. The evidence supports investor inattention as a source of the stock recommendation drift.

Nonprofit Organisations And Social Entrepreneurship Intentions, Wee Liang Tan Sep 2010

Nonprofit Organisations And Social Entrepreneurship Intentions, Wee Liang Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Nonprofit organizations are valued because they provide services that address unmet needs. Non-profit organizations who engage in social entrepreneurship augment their contributions through the new services, programs, enterprises and revenue generated. It is not surprising, therefore, for policy makers to encourage social entrepreneurship, social innovations and social enterprises. Such an initia-tive was introduced in Singapore recently. However, not all nonprofit organizations seek to innovate or create social enterprises. They may continue to devote themselves to their specific fields and exist-ing practices. Entrepreneurship research suggests that under certain conditions, organizations engage in entrepreneurship through new ventures, projects, and innovations. Hence, it …

Does Auditor Tenure Improve Audit Quality? Moderating Effects Of Industry Specialization And Fee Dependence, Chee Yeow Lim, Hun-Tong Tan Sep 2010

Does Auditor Tenure Improve Audit Quality? Moderating Effects Of Industry Specialization And Fee Dependence, Chee Yeow Lim, Hun-Tong Tan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We investigate whether the relation between auditor tenure and audit quality is conditional on auditor specialization and fee dependence. Although prior studies have investigated the relation between extended auditor-client tenure and audit quality, none has examined how this relation is jointly influenced by both auditor specialization and fee dependence. Our main analyses, using accrual quality as a measure of audit quality, show that firms audited by specialists (vs. non-specialists) have relatively higher audit quality with extended auditor tenure, and that this relation is negatively moderated by auditors’ fee dependence on clients. These results are robust to sensitivity tests, and alternative …

A New Perspective On Role-Player Training In Assessment Centres, Eveline Schollaert, Filip Lievens Sep 2010

A New Perspective On Role-Player Training In Assessment Centres, Eveline Schollaert, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The most recent assessment centre guidelines emphasize that exercises should be designed to evoke a substantial amount of relevant behaviour (International Task Force on Assessment Center Guidelines, 2009). However, no empirical evidence exists of how one can manage this This study aims to fill this gap by suggesting that role-player training should be extended via the use of 'prompts' to evoke behaviour. Prompts are standardized cues that a role-player consistently mentions in an AC exercise across candidates to elicit behaviours related to specific job-related dimensions In the present study, role players and candidates were randomly assigned to two experimental conditions …

Strategic Management Of Communication: Insights From The Contingency Theory Of Strategic Conflict Management, Augustine Pang, Yan Jin, Glen T. Cameron Sep 2010

Strategic Management Of Communication: Insights From The Contingency Theory Of Strategic Conflict Management, Augustine Pang, Yan Jin, Glen T. Cameron

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The dilemma facing crisis scholars could not be more paradoxical: How does one explain and predict the outcome of a phenomenor - characteristics which Chaffee and Berger (1987) argue to be the foundation of a theory - that is so contextual-dependent, where the twists and turns of unfolding events often frustrate the natural ebb of what one could reasonably surmise as logical trajectory?

Do Online Reviews Reflect A Product’S True Perceived Quality? An Investigation Of Online Movie Reviews Across Cultures, Noi Sian Koh, Nan Hu, Eric K. Clemons Sep 2010

Do Online Reviews Reflect A Product’S True Perceived Quality? An Investigation Of Online Movie Reviews Across Cultures, Noi Sian Koh, Nan Hu, Eric K. Clemons

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper investigates when the reported average of online ratings matches the perceived average assessment of the population as a whole, including the average assessments of both raters and non-raters. We apply behavioral theory to capture intentions in rating online movie reviews in two dissimilar countries – China and the United States. We argue that consumers’ rating behaviors are affected by cultural influences and that they are influenced in predictable ways. Based on data collected from IMDB.com and Douban.com, we found significant differences across raters from these two different cultures. Additionally, we examined how cultural elements influence rating behavior for …
