Consumer-Led Brand Development For A University Athletics Program, Lynn W. Mcgee Oct 2010

Consumer-Led Brand Development For A University Athletics Program, Lynn W. Mcgee

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

A foundational aspect of sports marketing is the study of how consumer relationships contribute to brand loyalty and behavior. A new baccalaureate university introduced intercollegiate athletics—and needed a process to define its distinctive brand assets and to select a brand name and brand mark. The qualitative and quantitative consumer-led process built brand loyalty using Gronroos' customer relationship model of external, internal and interactive marketing. A brand personality survey demonstrated significant differences in characteristics desired by different stakeholder groups. The benefits, challenges and implications of the consensus-building approach for practitioners are presented and the need for richer concepts and measures in …

A Study Of Price Evolution In Online Toy Market, Zhenlin Yang, Lydia L Gan, Fang-Fang Tang Oct 2010

A Study Of Price Evolution In Online Toy Market, Zhenlin Yang, Lydia L Gan, Fang-Fang Tang

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study and contrast pricing and price evolution of online only (Dotcom) and online branch of multi-channel retailers (OBMCRs) based on two panel data sets collected from online toy markets. Panel data regression analyses reveal several interesting empirical results: over time, OBMCRs and Dotcoms charge similar prices on average but Dotcoms significantly increase their shipping costs that eventually drive the overall average price of Dotcoms higher than that of OBMCRs. Price dispersions of both types of retailers are persistent. The price dispersion of OBMCRs is higher than that of Dotcoms at the beginning and does not change much over time, …

The Effect Of Institutional And Cultural Factors On The Perceptions Of Earnings Management, Marshall A. Geiger, Joyce Van Der Van Der Laan Smith Oct 2010

The Effect Of Institutional And Cultural Factors On The Perceptions Of Earnings Management, Marshall A. Geiger, Joyce Van Der Van Der Laan Smith

Accounting Faculty Publications

In this study we examine the effect of stakeholder orientation versus shareholder orientation, and the level of cultural secrecy on individuals’ perceptions of earnings management practices. Examining perceptions from 1,260 participants from 13 countries indicates that individuals from stakeholder-oriented institutional back- grounds were less accepting of earnings management, including both accounting earn- ings management and operating earnings management activities, than participants from shareholder-oriented institutional backgrounds, and that individuals from secretive cultures were more accepting of both types of earnings management activities. Our findings provide evidence of the anticipated perceptual differences across countries with respect to earnings management and suggest the …

Business Network-Based Value Creation In Electronic Commerce, Robert John Kauffman, Ting Li, Eric Van Heck Oct 2010

Business Network-Based Value Creation In Electronic Commerce, Robert John Kauffman, Ting Li, Eric Van Heck

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Information technologies (IT) have affected economic activities within and beyond the boundaries of the firm, changing the face of e-commerce. This article explores the circumstances under which value is created in business networks made possible by IT. Business networks combine the capabilities of multiple firms to produce and deliver products and services that none of them could more economically produce on its own and for which there is demand in the market. We call this business network-based value creation. We apply economic theory to explain the conditions under which business networks will exist and are able to sustain their value-producing …

Assessing Sport-Sales Training Effectiveness: To Enhance Sales Performance Of Prospective Sales Employees, Richard M. Southall, Ronald Dick, Thomas A. Pollack

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

The majority of entry-level positions within the sport industry fall in the area of sales. Yet, only recently have sportmanagement programs begun to offer courses devoted to sales education and training. The discipline of sales provides an ideal opportunity to incorporate experiential-based learning. While several recent articles have examined the application of experiential-learning to courses focused on ticket sales, this article presents the results of the first systematic assessment of such courses’ effectiveness. Specifically, this paper presents the results of an evaluation of sales-training programs that incorporate Southall, Nagel, LeGrande, and Han’s (2003) metadiscrete experiential learning model and the application …

Macroeconomic Effects Of Over-Investment In Housing In An Aggregative Model Of Economic Activity, Hian Teck Hoon Oct 2010

Macroeconomic Effects Of Over-Investment In Housing In An Aggregative Model Of Economic Activity, Hian Teck Hoon

Research Collection School Of Economics

Is there a theoretical basis for the view that the end of a period of over-investment necessarily leads to a period of below-normal employment as the excess capital stock is run down? We study the repercussions of a false boom in housing driven by prior expectations of future housing prices not justified by fundamentals. When these expectations are corrected, the result is a precipitous drop in housing prices and, on that account alone, some drop in employment. There is also a bulge in the housing stock. In the closed economy case, the downward shift of the term structure of interest …

Conflicting Or Complimentary? The Varying Approaches To Humanitarian Action, Andre Patzke Oct 2010

Conflicting Or Complimentary? The Varying Approaches To Humanitarian Action, Andre Patzke

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the international humanitarian aid community (IHAC), a group of national, political, public, and private actors, there are many dichotomies. These differences range from the organizations’ structures to their humanitarian philosophies. One philosophical schism amongst the IHAC actors is the seemingly contradictory approaches of the UN’s cluster system and that of the Dunantist organizations. In general, this schism can be characterized as a contrast in humanitarian ideologies; the integrated approach, which includes political development, on the one hand, and strict humanitarian aid that stays removed from issues of development on the other.

It was not the focus of my research …

A Study Of Internship Programs In The Bed-And-Breakfast Industry, Pamela Frazier

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Effective internship programs can offer both interns and employers significant benefits. For the college student or mid-career changer seeking entrance into an industry, an internship offers practical experience in an area of interest while providing valuable skills, bolstering a professional resume, and increasing a worker’s marketability. For the employer, internship programs can support operational success and reduce employee recruitment costs. Specific to the highly labor-intensive hotel industry, internship programs have been instrumental in filling labor shortages during peak seasons, which allow hotel organizations to consistently provide optimal guest service. An industry known for their high employee-turnover rates, internship programs have …

Tradeoffs And Depletion In Choice, Jing Wang, Nathan Novemsky, Ravi Dhar, Roy Baumeister Oct 2010

Tradeoffs And Depletion In Choice, Jing Wang, Nathan Novemsky, Ravi Dhar, Roy Baumeister

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Four experiments examine why choices deplete executive resources. The authors show that the resolution of trade-offs is a driver of depletion effects arising from choice, and the larger the trade-offs, the greater is the depletion effect. The authors also find that choice difficulty not related to trade-offs does not influence the depleting effect of the choices. Finally, the authors find that though people can intuit some depletion effects, they do not intuit that choices or trade-offs within choices might be depleting and therefore fail to predict that larger trade-offs are more depleting.

Labor And Media: A Strained Relationship, Mac-Z Zurawski Oct 2010

Labor And Media: A Strained Relationship, Mac-Z Zurawski

All Student Theses and Dissertations

The labor movement or union community of America has been in a steady decline for more than a decade. The 1950s saw the pinnacle of success with one-third of the U.S. workforce being unionized. Today only 8% of the private workforce is unionized. One way in which this decline may be perceived as more pronounced is through media alienation. According to journalists across the nation such as Philip M.Dine unions have been alienated by media and its type of union coverage. In this study, I analyze the way in which the New York Times portrays the labor movement during the …

Corporate Governance And Mindfulness: The Impact Of Management Accounting Systems Change, John Joseph Williams, Alfred E. Seaman Oct 2010

Corporate Governance And Mindfulness: The Impact Of Management Accounting Systems Change, John Joseph Williams, Alfred E. Seaman

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

The International Federation of Accountants (2009) argues that a governance structure should go beyond conformance with regulations and equally support a performance dimension that can lead to better outcomes. This paper explores the relationship between these two governance dimensions and the capacity for mindfulness, utilizing organizational theory that describes high reliability organizations. Survey data was obtained from top-level accounting professionals in a sample of 124 Canadian firms. Regression results support the hypothesis that both the conformance and performance dimensions of governance are significant determinants of the capacity for mindfulness. Additional analysis shows that the explanatory power of this relationship persists …

Auditor Reputation And Earnings Management: International Evidence From The Banking Industry, Kanagaretnam Kiridaran, Chee Yeow Lim, Gerald J. Lobo Oct 2010

Auditor Reputation And Earnings Management: International Evidence From The Banking Industry, Kanagaretnam Kiridaran, Chee Yeow Lim, Gerald J. Lobo

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We examine the relation between auditor reputation and earnings management in banks using a sample of banks from 29 countries. In particular, we examine the implications of two aspects of auditor reputation, auditor type and auditor industry specialization, for earnings management in banks. We find that both auditor type and auditor industry specialization moderate benchmark-beating (loss-avoidance and just-meeting-or-beating prior year’s earnings) behavior in banks. In addition, we find that once auditor type and auditor industry specialization are included in the same tests, only auditor industry specialization has a significant impact on constraining benchmark-beating behavior. In separate tests related to income-increasing …

The Role Of Emotions In Crisis Responses: Inaugural Test Of The Integrated Crisis Mapping (Icm) Model, Yan Jin, Augustine Pang, Glen T. Cameron Oct 2010

The Role Of Emotions In Crisis Responses: Inaugural Test Of The Integrated Crisis Mapping (Icm) Model, Yan Jin, Augustine Pang, Glen T. Cameron

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to extend current theories in crisis communication, by developing a more systemic approach to understanding the role of emotions in crises and the strategies organizations can use to respond. The authors' integrated crisis mapping (ICM) model is premised on a public-based, emotion-driven perspective where different crises are mapped on two continua, the organization's engagement in the crisis and primary public's coping strategy. Design/methodology/approach: Content analysis was used to analyze 259 stories in US mainstream newspaper covering five different crisis cases. Findings: The initial test suggests theoretical rigor. It found that publics involved in …

Application Of The Fractional Diffusion Equation For Predicting Market Behaviour, Jonathan Blackledge Oct 2010

Application Of The Fractional Diffusion Equation For Predicting Market Behaviour, Jonathan Blackledge

Articles

Most Financial modelling system rely on an underlying hypothesis known as the Eficient Market Hypothesi (EMH) including the famous BlackScholes formula for placing an option. However, the EMH has a fundamental flaw: it is based on the assumption that economic processes are normally distributed and it has long been known that this is not the case. This fundamental assumption leads to a number of shortcomings associated with using the EMH to analyse financial data which includes failure to predict the future volatility of a market share value. This paper introduces a new financial risk assessment model based on Levy statistics …

U.S.-Based Fast-Food Restaurants: Factors Influencing The International Expansion Of Franchise Systems, Ilan Alon, Liqiang Ni

Faculty Publications

Studies of international franchising are scant, but increasing, and can be divided into two streams of research: those focusing on environmental predictors of internationalization and those focusing on strategic, firm-level characteristics. Examingin the latter category, this study empirically explores a set of firm-level attributes as predictors of decision-making on whether or not firms seek international expansion. using longitudinal data from Bond's Franchise Guide 2001-2000, we draw on a sample of U.S.-based fast-food franchise systems to test our hypotheses. Specifically, out database is comprised of 1,058 observations of 158 chains and we estimate a semi-parametric logistic modlel for international franchising. The …
