Effects Of Right-To-Work Laws: Can They Include Higher Levels Of Satisfaction For Union Workers?, Steven Lance Popejoy Jan 2010

Effects Of Right-To-Work Laws: Can They Include Higher Levels Of Satisfaction For Union Workers?, Steven Lance Popejoy

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This paper reviews theories and evidence on the effect of “right-to-work” laws on union members’ satisfaction with their unions. With the increase of right-to-work activity at the state level, and with federal right-to-work legislation pending in Congress, this has returned as an important political issue. Following a brief review of how the hypotheses of “taste,” “free-rider,” and “bargaining power” can influence various effects of right-to-work laws, the idea of utility maximization paired with measures of union satisfaction is explored to show theoretical evidence that greater levels of union satisfaction could exist in right-to-work states than exist in non-right-to-work states. Arguments …

Propensity To Just Meet Or Beat Quarterly Earnings Forecasts: An Examination Of The Effects Of Sox Sections 302 And 906, Stacy Ann Mastrolia Jan 2010

Propensity To Just Meet Or Beat Quarterly Earnings Forecasts: An Examination Of The Effects Of Sox Sections 302 And 906, Stacy Ann Mastrolia

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This paper examines whether the provisions of SOX Sections 302 and 906 are associated with improved quarterly financial reporting quality. SOX 302 and 906 require that senior managers certify the accuracy of their quarterly financial statements, and false certification now carries criminal penalties. Specifically, this paper examines whether companies are more or less likely to just meet or beat their quarterly earnings forecasts following the implementation of SOX 302 and 906. My results indicate that following Sox 302 and 906, companies are less likely to just meet or beat their quarterly earnings forecasts for quarters 2, 3, and 4, suggesting …

The Evolving Service Culture Of Cuban Tourism: A Case Study, Tony L. Henthorne, Babu P. George, Alvin J. Williams

Management Faculty Publications

The case examines the impressive growth of tourism in Cuba. It analyzes tourism development in a society striving to navigate its way economically amid numerous social and political challenges. The Cuban experiment with tourism is a shortterm mega success. However, it is highly uncertain whether long-term sustainability can be maintained without the appropriate managerial changes at all levels. This paper highlights challenges in the tourism employment sector – training, supervisory issues, and performance evaluation, within a centrally controlled bureaucratic system. Of specific interest is the disconnection between the natural hospitability of the Cuban people and low levels of tourist satisfaction …

The Ethics Of Bluffing: The Effects Of Individual Differences On Perceived Ethicality And Bluffing Behavior, G. Stoney Alder, Rebecca M. Guidice Jan 2010

The Ethics Of Bluffing: The Effects Of Individual Differences On Perceived Ethicality And Bluffing Behavior, G. Stoney Alder, Rebecca M. Guidice

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Although researchers have debated the ethicality of bluffing in business, little research has examined individuals’ attitudes and beliefs towards bluffing and how characteristics of the individual influence such perceptions and subsequent behavior. We consider this issue by examining how individuals’ ethical orientation influences their perceptions of the ethicality of bluffing select organizational stakeholders, their willingness to bluff, and their actual bluffing behavior. Results indicate that ethical orientation exerts direct effects on the perceived ethicality of bluffing and indirect effects on individuals’ reported willingness to engage in this misleading form of communication as well as their actual bluffing behavior. Implications for …

Data was collected through a review of the relevant literature and the collection of focus group responses from employees of the four community centers in Syracuse, New York. The study …

Endogenous Oca (Optimum Currency Area) Analysis And The Early Euro Experience, Thomas D. Willett, Orawan Permpoon, Clas Wihlborg Jan 2010

Endogenous Oca (Optimum Currency Area) Analysis And The Early Euro Experience, Thomas D. Willett, Orawan Permpoon, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Some have argued that the endogenous responses to the formation of a currency area are so strong that one need not worry about optimum currency area conditions ex ante. We argue that this is much too strong a conclusion. We draw on a number of recent studies to evaluate the endogeneity experiences of the eurozone in three major areas; trade flows, business cycle synchronisation and structural reforms to improve labour and product market flexibility. Simple before-and-after comparisons are insufficient for analysis of endogeneity. The experiences of non-euro Western European economies suggest that broader trends also had considerable influence on trade …

The Determinants And Measurement Of A Country Brand: The Country Brand Strength Index, Marc Fetscherin

Faculty Publications

Purpose: A strong country brand can stimulate exports, attract tourism, investments, and immigration. The purpose of this paper is to construct and present a country brand strength index (CBSI) which assesses the strength of a country brand based on objective secondary data.

Design/methodology/approach: By applying a company-based brand equity approach, we present a standardized country brand strength index.

Findings: Our results show that the countries with the strongest country brand are smaller, developed countries in Europe. Our proposed index leads to results similar to the widely used Anholt GfK Roper Nation Brand Index (NBI), which measures perceptions of a country …

The Relationship Of Cultural Dimensions To The Factors Of Gravity In Korean Trade, Timothy Veach

Faculty Publications - College of Business

Globalization has brought about the awareness that culture may play a crucial role in the degree of efficiency or even the success of transactions in international trade. In international business endeavors involving organizations in Korea, differences in national culture may have substantial implications. Hofstede's (1980, 1983) cultural dimensions have been developed and used widely in social sciences research in order to understand the role of national culture in business environments. In this study, empirical analysis is conducted on the influence of these dimensions on the factors of gravity in international trade. Specifically, this study is of an exploratory nature with …
