What’S In It For Them? Advantages Of Higher Status Partners In Exchange Relationships, Fabrizio Castellucci, Gokhan Ertug Feb 2010

What’S In It For Them? Advantages Of Higher Status Partners In Exchange Relationships, Fabrizio Castellucci, Gokhan Ertug

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article explores the motivations that high-status firms have to enter exchange relationships with lower-status partners. We argue that high-status firms can secure greater effort from lower-status partners and that the amount of effort will be proportional to their status advantage over these partners. We further propose that such effort will translate to increased performance by mediating the negative consequences of affiliations with lower-status partners. This increase in performance constitutes the motivation for high-status firms to enter exchange relationships with lower-status partners. Findings using data on Formula One racing support our argument.

Audit Market Concentration And Audit Quality, Sanjay Kallapur, Srinivasan Sankaraguruswamy, Yoonseok Zang Feb 2010

Audit Market Concentration And Audit Quality, Sanjay Kallapur, Srinivasan Sankaraguruswamy, Yoonseok Zang

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

Policymakers and regulators have been concerned about the impact of audit market concentration resulting from decline in the number of audit firms due to mergers and the demise of Arthur Andersen. In this paper we find a positive association between audit market concentration (Herfindahl index) at the MSA level and audit quality (measured by discretionary accruals and the Dechow-Dichev (2002) measure of accrual quality). We control for fixed year effects, therefore our results are unlikely to be affected by the increase in concentration due to Andersen’s demise contemporaneous with an increase in audit quality because of regulatory measures such as …

Understanding Cognitive Differences In Processing Competing Visualizations Of Complex Systems, Madhavi Mukul Chakrabarty Jan 2010

Understanding Cognitive Differences In Processing Competing Visualizations Of Complex Systems, Madhavi Mukul Chakrabarty

Dissertations

Node-link diagrams are used represent systems having different elements and relationships among the elements. Representing the systems using visualizations like node-link diagrams provides cognitive aid to individuals in understanding the system and effectively managing these systems. Using appropriate visual tools aids in task completion by reducing the cognitive load of individuals in understanding the problems and solving them. However, the visualizations that are currently developed lack any cognitive processing based evaluation. Most of the evaluations (if any) are based on the result of tasks performed using these visualizations. Therefore, the evaluations do not provide any perspective from the point of …

Job Seeking And Job Application In Social Networking Sites : Predicting Job Seekers' Behavioral Intentions, Maria Marcella Plummer

Dissertations

Social networking sites (SNSs) are revolutionizing the way in which employers and job seekers connect and interact with each other. Despite the reported benefits of SNSs with respect to finding a job, there are issues such as privacy concerns that might be deterring job seekers from using these sites in their attempts to secure a job. It is therefore important to understand the factors that are salient in predicting job seekers' use of SNSs in applying for jobs.

In this research, a theoretical model was developed to explicate job seekers' intentions to use SNSs to apply for jobs. Two aspects …

Virtual worlds are computer-simulated worlds in which multi-players can simultaneously interact in a rich graphical environment. The development of virtual worlds, along with the massive growth of users, creates opportunities for business organizations. Although there have been many studies regarding the inconsistency between consumers` attitudes and behavior, prior research has almost exclusively focused on the relationship between the attitude before behavior and the initial behavior. Relatively little research has been conducted on consumer satisfaction after purchase and post-purchase behavior. This research proposed that the relationship between satisfaction and post-purchase behavior is moderated by consumers` psychological characteristics such as need for cognitive closure(NCC) and temporal self-construal(SC). The need for cognitive closure refers to individuals` desire for a firm answer to a question and an aversion toward ambiguity. We assumed the need for cognitive closure …

Market, Country And World Effects On Regional Equity Market Integration, Chee Wooi Hooy, Kim Leng Goh

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

This study explores the fundamental driving forces of regional equity market integration in a trading bloc. The determinant factors are categorized into market attribute, economic fundamentals and world information. Our sample consists of 26 equity markets of ive regional trading blocs, namely AFTA, CER, EFTA, EU and NAFTA over the period of January 1999 to August 2005. We measure market integration based on pricing errors as proposed by Korajczyk (1996) and Levine and Zervos (1998). Using panel regressions, our results show that equity integration in these trading blocs is driven internally, where only individual-market volatility and economic fundamentals play a …

The causes of contagion effects during periods of crisis are still unable to be fully explained by fundamental factors. This paper focuses on non-fundamental explanatory factors such as inancial centers' shock ampliication effects induced by global portfolio investors and extends Kaminsky and Reinhart (2003)'s center-periphery framework by introducing three time zones for the analysis of conditional distribution of 37 countries' daily stock returns from 1994 to 2003, and accessibility of stock markets to investigate if inancial centers stabilize or amplify shocks. Centers such as U.S. and Germany played a vital role in propagating turmoil in G7 countries and spreading shocks …

Market Integration And Financial Crisis: New Evidence From Asian Paciic Markets, Adwin Surja Atmadja, Yanhui Wu, Wan Juli

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

We investigated the stock market integration among national equity indices in eight countries from the period of 1995 to 2009, which was then clustered into four sub-sample periods. The multivariate time series analyses were employed to observe the degree and the existence of the integration. We found a cointegrating vector in each of three sub-sample periods. Interestingly, in the 1997 inancial crisis, we found that there was no indication of cointegration relationship among the equity indices. The results of block causality tests and the accounting innovation analysis indicate that the short run dynamic interactions among the stock indices became more …

Price Manipulation In Indonesian Capital Market: Empirical Analysis On Stockbroker’S Behavior And Interaction Pattern Between Domestic Investors And Foreign Investors, Buddi Wibowo

A stock broker has strong incentives to give a signal to public investors about price of some stocks in order to get an unfair proit. A usual pattern of manipulation done by stock broker is …

Reviewing The Role Of Systems Analysis In Data Networks And The Possible Role For System Theories Going Forward, Grant Kirby

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Data networks have been a very important catalyst in the growth of business in the US. As data networks became more complex in the 1970s and 1980s it was necessary to implement system analysis methodologies for the more complex networks. Over the last three decades data networks have become increasingly more complex and organizations and governments are increasingly more dependent on their services. The new applications and services being ushered in this next decade may well render current methodologies ineffective.
