Networks - Ii: Assessment Of Node Density In Cartesian Ad Hoc Routing Protocols (Carp), Imran Raza, Mohammad Hasan Raza
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
With the rapid development in the geographical positioning system (GPS) technology, the geographical routing category of the MANET protocols has recently been a hot research area. The Cartesian Ad hoc Routing Protocols (CARP) are a set of three adaptive and connectionless protocols that address the problem of routing and power consumption in MANET. These protocols are used to limit the number of forwarding nodes in a logical transmission area. Density of an ad hoc network is considered a network parameter in CARP, and is used in the calculations to form a logical transmission area. The CARP assume that the nodes …

Data Mining: Applying Centroid Based Adjustment To Kernel Based Object Tracking For Improving Localization, Rashid Mehmood, Muhammad Usman Ali, Imtiaz A. Taj
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
In recent studies kernel based object tracking (KBOT) using Bhattacharya coefficient as similarity measure is shown to be robust and efficient object tracking technique. Image histogram provides a compact summarization of the distribution of data in an image. Due to computational efficiency; histogram has been successfully applied in KBOT based tracking algorithms. However without spatial or shape information, similar objects of different color may be indistinguishable based solely on histogram comparisons. The application of meanshift algorithm (the core of KBOT) on 1-D low level features of histogram may converge to false local maxima and cause inaccuracy of target localization. In …

Application Of Ict - I: Risp Design Using Tightly Coupled Reconfigurable Fpga Cores, M. Aqeel Iqbal, Uzma Saeed Awan
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
Reconfigurable instruction set processors are the next generation processors which can adapt their instruction sets through a reconfiguration process in their hardware according to the demand of the application being under execution on them. In this way the processors adapt the hardware which is the most suitable solution for the running application and hence it accelerates the performance gain. The reconfigurable instruction set processors are programmable processors that contain the reconfigurable logic in one or more of their functional units. Among the most important design parameters are: the granularity of the reconfigurable logic, the structure of the configuration memory, the …

Networks - I: Networks-On-Chip: Challenges, Trends And Mechanisms For Enhancements, Omer Tayan
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
The rate of increase of silicon capacity in integrated circuits (IC) will enable system integration of several billion transistors to reside on a single chip in the near future. Future system-on-chip (SoC) systems must therefore integrate up to several hundreds of cores within a single chip, and SoC designs will employ on-chip communication networks (NoCs) as a result. This paper discusses the problems with many current SoC systems, surveys the challenges and trends facing future SoC designs and proposes a mechanism for enhancing NoC strategies of the future by enhancing memory management and utilization techniques within an NoC.

Artificial Intelligence – I: Robust Audio Steganography Via Genetic Algorithm, Mazdak Zamani, Hamed Taherdoost, Azizah A. Manaf, Rabiah B. Ahmad, Akram M. Zeki
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
Steganography is a technique used to transmit hidden information by modifying an audio signal in an imperceptible manner. The transmission must be possible in spite of subsequent imperceptible alterations (attacks) of the modified signal. We propose a novel approach of substitution technique of audio steganography. Using genetic algorithm, message bits are embedded into multiple, vague and higher LSB layers, resulting in increased robustness. The robustness specially would be increased against those intentional attacks which try to reveal the hidden message and also some unintentional attacks like noise addition as well.

Artificial Intelligence – I: Subjective Decision Making Using Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Advisor, Owais Malik
International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies
In this paper, we present and compare two-stage type-2 fuzzy logic advisor (FLA) for subjective decision making in the domain of students' performance evaluation. We test our proposed model for evaluating students' performance in our computer science and engineering department at HBCC/KFUPM in two domains namely cooperating training and capstone/senior project assessment where we find these FLAs very useful and promising. In our proposed model, the assessment criteria for different components of cooperative training and senior project are transformed into linguistic labels and evaluation information is extracted into the form of IF-THEN rules from the experts. These rules are modeled …

What started as a modest shelter for homeless families in downtown San Diego, has grown into Father Joe’s Villages (FJV), a multi-program, multi-dimensional approach to break the cycle of homelessness.
Since 1982, Fr. Joe’s Villages’ vision and mission reflect the aim the organization is determined to achieve within the communities it serves: to ensure that all neighbors in need will have access to food, housing, career development, healthcare, and education that will promote independence, self-sufficiency and fulfillment of one’s potential. To address these needs, FJV provides short and long term transitional housing for homeless men, women and families, and offers …

The First Steps Toward Developing Leadership Programs For Women In The United Arab Emirates: A Survey Study Exploring The Transformation Of Emirati College Students, Susan R. Madsen
Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications
Developing effective leaders has become one of the most critical challenges for many organizations today, as strong, competent leadership often separates high-performing, successful organizations from less effective ones. In many countries research is being conducted to assist practitioners in designing successful leadership development programs for both men and women. However, in some countries, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), these efforts are only in their infancy, and leadership development for women is a new concept. Needless to say, there is no evidence of existing research on the development of women leaders in that country, and only a few indications …

Executive Perks: Compensation And Corporate Performance In China, Ilan Alon, Pattarin Adithipyangkul, Tianyu Zhang
Faculty Publications
Many studies have examined CEO compensation in developed countries, where a long tradition of disclosure renders data readily available. In emerging economies, particularly in China, where market-based compensation is a relatively new phenomenon, there are few studies of CEO compensation. In addition, information on the use of non-cash compensation is almost absent. Building on the general literature on CEO compensation, and Chinese economic and management studies, this article singularly contributes to the extant literature by (1) examining the motivational determinants of CEO perk compensation, on the one hand, and (2) exploring the relative contribution of perks to performance. We anticipate …

Pepperdine Private Capital Markets Report
The Pepperdine private cost of capital survey was originally launched in 2007 and is the first comprehensive and simultaneous investigation of the major private capital market segments. This year’s survey specifically examined the behavior of senior lenders, asset‐based lenders, mezzanine funds, private equity groups, venture capital firms, angel investors, privately‐held businesses, investment bankers, business brokers, limited partners, and business appraisers. The Pepperdine survey investigated, for each private capital market segment, the important benchmarks that must be met in order to qualify for capital, how much capital is typically accessible, what the required returns are for extending capital in today’s economic …
The Water Torture Of Baseball's Steroid Leaks, Richard C. Crepeau
The Water Torture Of Baseball's Steroid Leaks, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
When I was a young boy I remember using the term "Chinese water torture" for any activity that seemed long, torturous, and pointless. I have been reminded of this repeatedly over the last few years as slowly, usually one by one, the names of those baseball players who tested positive for some sort of performance enhancing drugs have become public. Anonymous and confidential drug testing that was conducted for Major League baseball and the MLB Players Association in 2003 to determine the extent of a drug problem in baseball has turned out to be not so confidential.

Surveyed Consumer Response To Grocery Store Social Networking Websites, Greg Aszman
Surveyed Consumer Response To Grocery Store Social Networking Websites, Greg Aszman
Agribusiness
This study was undertaken to determine whether or not people would respond favorably to a grocery store setting up a page on a social networking website (i.e. MySpace) and if so, what people would like to see on the page. Self-addressed, self-stamped envelopes containing a survey and a cover letter were passed out to obtain the information. This project used simple means and frequencies to analyze the whole population and sections of the population; social network users and non-social network users. Independent T-Tests and Chi-Square tests were used to compare the two groups. A statistical program, SPSS, was used to …

Aiming For “Brand Bonuses” In Times Of Budget Cuts, Knowledge@Smu
Aiming For “Brand Bonuses” In Times Of Budget Cuts, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Branding, perceived by the bean-counters as an expense item, is always among the first to go during recessions. In its place are price cuts and price promotions aimed at delivering value to customers. The common (and predictable) belief is to stimulate demand quickly, so as to sustain production and operations during the trying times. After all, brand equity cannot possibly help close a sale or bring in the cash –- or can it? To answer this question, SMU’s Provost, Rajendra K. Srivastava, examined the financial performance of brands during a downturn in a hunt for the elusive “brand bonus”.

Forget the stereotype of the Indian accountant, IT manager or call centre operator. Instead, think savvy bigwigs with hungry appetites for all things foreign. Some of the world’s largest and most successful corporate acquisitions over the last 15 years have been carried out by conglomerates bearing the Indian flag. Tata, Mittal, Bharat Forge and Infosys are but just the more prominent names. Many others are emerging. What can we learn from these powerhouses and what makes them tick?

Shopping With Elephants: Coming To Terms With Nepotism In The Retail Space, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Nepotism, favouritism and discrimination: issues that exist not only in business and politics, but also, in shopping malls! Research has shown that customers will likely receive benefits and superior service when they demonstrate a common “bond” with the people who serve them. Perks include free products, upgrades, queue-jumps and other value-adds, such as staff recommendations and extra attentive service. While such “allowances” create wonderful retail experiences for customers who receive it, is it fair for those who don’t?

Community websites are increasingly viewed as treasure troves of opinions, from restaurant service to hotel accommodations, from mobile phone reviews to reliability ratings of an online auctioneer. An underlying factor behind the success of such websites is the implicit trust between users – to offer unbiased, accurate views. Consequently, a trustworthy online community puts users at ease to make decisions and perform transactions confidently. So web administrators would do well to maintain a trusting online community, if only to keep the cash tills a-ringing. But is it possible to measure or monitor something as unquantifiable as inter-user trust?
