The image of a nation is crucial in the conduct of international relations (Wang, J. (2006). Managing national reputation and international relations in the global era: Public diplomacy revisited. Public Relations Review, 32, 91–96). A favorable image plays a critical role in asserting one's influence (Benoit, W. L., & Brinson, S. L. (1994). AT&T: “Apologies are not enough”. Communication Quarterly, 42, 75–88; Wang, J. (2006). Managing national reputation and international relations in the global era: Public diplomacy revisited. Public Relations Review, 32, 91–96). Often, strategic communication tools like public relations and media diplomacy are used to enhance a nation's image …

Between Innovation And Legitimation-Boundaries And Knowledge Flow In Management Consultancy, Andrew Sturdy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Robin Fincham, Karen Handley

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Management consultancy is seen by many as a key agent in the adoption of new management ideas and practices in organizations. Two contrasting views are dominant-consultants as innovators, bringing new knowledge to their clients or as legitimating client knowledge. Those few studies which examine directly the flow of knowledge through consultancy in projects with clients favour the innovator view and highlight the important analytical and practical value of boundaries-consultants as both knowledge and organizational outsiders. Likewise, in the legitimator view, the consultants' role is seen in terms of the primacy of the organizational boundary. By drawing on a wider social …

Institutional Investors And The Informational Efficiency Of Prices, Ekkehart Boehmer, Eric K. Kelley Sep 2009

Institutional Investors And The Informational Efficiency Of Prices, Ekkehart Boehmer, Eric K. Kelley

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Using a broad panel of NYSE-listed stocks between 1983 and 2004, we study the relation between institutional shareholdings and the relative informational efficiency of prices, measured as deviations from a random walk. Stocks with greater institutional ownership are priced more efficiently, and we show that variation in liquidity does not drive this result. One mechanism through which prices become more efficient is institutional trading activity, even when institutions trade passively. But efficiency is also directly related to institutional holdings, even after controlling for institutional trading, analyst coverage, short selling, variation in liquidity, and firm characteristics.

Networking As A Job Search Behaviour: A Social Network Perspective, Greet Van Hoye, Edwin A. J. Van Hooft, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Although networking is typically recommended as a job search strategy in the popular press, research on networking as a job search behaviour is scarce. On the basis of social network theory, the present study investigated whether the structure and composition of job seekers' social network determined their networking behaviour and moderated its relationship with job search and employment outcomes. The data were collected in a large, representative sample of 1,177 unemployed Flemish job seekers, using a two-wave longitudinal design. Job seekers with a larger social network and with stronger ties in their network spent more time networking, beyond individual differences …

Understanding Early Diffusion Of Digital Wireless Phones, Robert J. Kauffman, Angsana A. Techatassanasoontorn Sep 2009

Understanding Early Diffusion Of Digital Wireless Phones, Robert J. Kauffman, Angsana A. Techatassanasoontorn

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

There is increasing empirical evidence from academic research and strong recognition among policymakers that wide diffusion and innovative uses of digital wireless phones are important sources of a country's economic growth and social development. Adopters do not necessarily adopt digital wireless phones at the same time though. Although the diffusion of innovation theory suggests five adopter categories according to their degree of innovativeness, this approach lacks theoretical justification and, more importantly, it makes a critical assumption of a normal distribution of adopters that needs empirical validation. This study investigates the basis for defining different adopter categories and factors that affect …

A Hybrid Firm's Pricing Strategy In Electronic Commerce Under Channel Migration, Robert John Kauffman, Dongwon Lee, Jung Lee, Byungjoon Yoo Sep 2009

A Hybrid Firm's Pricing Strategy In Electronic Commerce Under Channel Migration, Robert John Kauffman, Dongwon Lee, Jung Lee, Byungjoon Yoo

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Achieving an effective business design across the Internet and the off-line channel is a critical concern for a hybrid firm's choice of pricing strategy. Two pricing models are proposed to examine how consumer channel migration (one-way channel interaction from the traditional sales channel to the Internet) affects pricing strategy. One model has no interaction between the Internet and off-line channels. The other includes the possibility of one-way migration to the Internet channel and incorporates consumers' channel-switching costs and loyalty to the firm. The two models offer interesting results for understanding traditional and Internet-based selling. A high level of channel migration …

Font Size: Make Font Size Smaller Make Font Size Default Make Font Size Larger Exploiting Coordination Locales In Distributed Pomdps Via Social Model Shaping, Pradeep Varakantham, Jun Young Kwak, Matthew Taylor, Janusz Marecki, Paul Scerri, Milind Tambe

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Distributed POMDPs provide an expressive framework for modeling multiagent collaboration problems, but NEXPComplete complexity hinders their scalability and application in real-world domains. This paper introduces a subclass of distributed POMDPs, and TREMOR, an algorithm to solve such distributed POMDPs. The primary novelty of TREMOR is that agents plan individually with a single agent POMDP solver and use social model shaping to implicitly coordinate with other agents. Experiments demonstrate that TREMOR can provide solutions orders of magnitude faster than existing algorithms while achieving comparable, or even superior, solution quality.

In-Group / Out-Group Dynamics And Effectiveness In Partially Distributed Teams, Faina Privman Aug 2009

In-Group / Out-Group Dynamics And Effectiveness In Partially Distributed Teams, Faina Privman

Dissertations

When organizations collaborate they often do so using partially distributed teams (PDTs). In a Partially Distributed Team there exist at least two distinct sub-groups. In addition, at least one of the sub-groups has two or more members that are geographically co-located. Co-located members can meet face to face; chat in the hallway; have lunch together; and otherwise socialize with one another. On the other hand, remote members must rely on technology to communicate and work together. This distinct characteristic of partially distributed teams makes them especially susceptible to the In-Group / Out Group dynamic (Huang and Ocker, 2006). This dynamic …

Learning Without Default: A Study Of One-Class Classification And The Low-Default Portfolio Problem, Kenneth Kennedy, Brian Mac Namee, Sarah Jane Delany

Conference papers

This paper asks at what level of class imbalance one-class classifiers outperform two-class classifiers in credit scoring problems in which class imbalance, referred to as the low-default portfolio problem, is a serious issue. The question is answered by comparing the performance of a variety of one-class and two-class classifiers on a selection of credit scoring datasets as the class imbalance is manipulated. We also include random oversampling as this is one of the most common approaches to addressing class imbalance. This study analyses the suitability and performance of recognised two-class classifiers and one-class classifiers. Based on our study we conclude …

Wireless Networks: Certificateless Id-Based Authentication Using Threshold Signature For P2p Manets, Aasia Samreen, Seema Ansari

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

As far as the security of MANET (mobile and ad hoc network) is concerned, it depends upon the secure authentication especially for P2P MANETs. Identity based encryption was introduced to construct Public Key without requiring a certificate. Therefore, certificateless authentication combined with threshold digital signature and efficient key generation using identities such as IP address, are the challenging issues in front of researchers. In this paper we have addressed the problem of identity based secure authentication employing well-known RSA algorithm and secret sharing to generate threshold signature on a message.

The approach follows by fitting a model to face image and registering it to a standard template. The models consist of distribution of points in 2D and 3D. We extract a set of feature vectors from normalized images using principal components analysis and using them for a binary decision tree for classification. A …

Artificial Intelligence – Ii: Watermarking Of Chest Ct Scan Medical Images For Content Authentication, Nisar A. Memon, S.A.M. Gilani, Asad Ali Aug 2009

Artificial Intelligence – Ii: Watermarking Of Chest Ct Scan Medical Images For Content Authentication, Nisar A. Memon, S.A.M. Gilani, Asad Ali

International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies

Medical image is usually comprised of region of interest (ROI) and region of non interest (RONI). ROI is the region that contains the important information from diagnosis point of view so it must be stored without any distortion. We have proposed a digital watermarking technique which avoids the distortion of image in ROI by embedding the watermark information in RONI. The watermark is comprised of patient information, hospital logo and message authentication code, computed using hash function. Earlier BCH encryption of watermark is performed to ensure inaccessibility of embedded data to the adversaries.
