The Role Of Organizational Learning Capabilities In Strategic Alliances, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau
The Role Of Organizational Learning Capabilities In Strategic Alliances, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau
Management Faculty Research
Recent studies on strategic alliance show great interest on how firms develop alliance capabilities to achieve alliance success. This study examines the relationship between organizational learning capabilities and alliance performance. The concept of organizational learning capabilities in this study is developed comprising training availability, technical expertise, and alliance experience. It proposes that a greater alliance learning capability is positively related to alliance goal achievement. The research further investigates how the inter- and intra-firm mechanism, the average level of technical expertise and alliance experience, and the gap of technical expertise and alliance experience between the partners impact alliance objectives.

Preference And Usage Of Pasture Versus Free-Stall Housing By Lactating Dairy Cattle, A. L. Legrand, M. A. G. Von Keyserlingk, D. M. Weary
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
The aim of the current study was to assess if cows preferred pasture or indoor housing, and how diurnal and environmental factors affected this preference. Lactating dairy cows (n = 5 groups, each containing 5 cows) were sequentially housed either in a free-stall barn on pasture, or given the choice between the 2 environments. Each group was tested 3 times under each condition, for a total of 21 d, to assess the effects of varying climatic conditions (outdoor temperature ranged from 9.9 to 28.2°C and daily rainfall from 0 to 65 mm/d over the course of the experiment). When provided …

Preference For Pasture Versus Freestall Housing By Dairy Cattle When Stall Availability Indoors Is Reduced, A. C. Falk, D. M. Weary, C. Winckler, M. A. G. Von Keyserlingk
Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection
Providing cattle with access to pasture has been shown to yield benefits, including access to more space, fewer agonistic interactions, better air quality, and the ability to perform a greater range of normal behaviors. Preference for pasture appears to depend on several parameters, including weather conditions and availability of shade. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the preference for pasture versus inside a freestall barn with variable stocking densities at the stalls. We also investigated the effect of temperature-humidity index (THI) and precipitation on this preference. Overall, cows spent on average 13.7 ± 2.6 h/d (mean ± …

Pcaob Inspections: Perceptions Of Triennial Firms With No-Deficiency Inspections, Bernard H. Newman, Mary Ellen Oliverio
Faculty Working Papers and Articles
The drive to enhance audit quality after the cascade of audit failures in the final decades of the last century and first two years of the new century resulted in a new structure for the oversight of public accounting firms. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) was established with the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. This Board was given the authority to inspect all public accounting firms who provide audits to publicly-owned companies reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission. Such public accounting firms were required to register with the PCAOB. Accounting firms who audit more than …

USD Evaluation of Applied Learning Model in Nonprofit Leadership and Management Master's Program
Student learning outcomes and student satisfaction of nonprofit management graduate degree programs have received much attention recently from researchers. However, little research examines the community impact of such programs.
This paper reports findings from a community impact study of the Masters of Arts in Nonprofit Leadership and Management at the University of San Diego. An extensive qualitative study was conducted to determine whether student-led applied projects conducted for nonprofit organizations had an impact on those organizations, and if so, to assess the type and duration of that impact. A key finding was that all organizations that were interviewed for the …

Assessing Impact Of Iso 9000 Certification On International Trade, Ha Le
All Theses
Introduced by the International Organization for Standardization in 1987, the ISO 9000 family of standards is a `generic quality management standard' that has been claimed to have a great impact on company performance and upon a company's ability to satisfy customers' expectations (ISO, 2009). In addition, ISO 9000 standards also help to create consensus on requirements and standards all around the world and in doing so can facilitate trade. While many studies have examined claims about the impact of ISO 9000 standards as a trade facilitation tool results, thus far, are ambiguous. ISO 9000 standards also have different impacts across …

How The Madoff Fraud Could Affect Your Cpa Practice, Stephen Scarpati
WCBT Faculty Publications
With an estimated $65 billion lost from trust funds, retirement plans, pensions, investment funds, inheritance monies, and nonprofit organizations, many people have been adversely affected by the Ponzi scheme perpetrated by Bernard L. Madoff. When you combine a lot of lost money with a lot of angry people, the result is a lot of lawsuits. The breadth of those lawsuits will encompass all associated with the affected organizations--including CPAs. Those messages were loud and clear at the May 27, 2009, breakfast symposium "Are CPAs the Next Madoff Victims? The Accountant's Liability," sponsored by The CPA Journal.

Implementing An Enterprise Information System To Reengineer And Streamline Administrative Processes In A Distance Learning Unit, M'Hammed Abdous, Wu He
Distance Learning Faculty & Staff Publications
During the past three years, we have developed and implemented an enterprise information system (EIS) to reengineer and facilitate the administrative process for preparing and teaching distance learning courses in a midsized-to-large university (with 23,000 students). The outcome of the implementation has been a streamlined and efficient process which has delivered higher faculty satisfaction at a substantial cost reduction. In this paper, we propose a new conceptual and operational framework for process reengineering (PR) in higher education institutions. We also share our practical experience gained while designing, developing, and integrating three subsystems into an EIS. We hope that our experience, …

Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we propose a method for detecting circular shapes with subpixel accuracy. First, the geometric properties of circles have been used to find the diameters as well as the circumference pixels. The center and radius are then estimated by the circumference pixels. Both synthetic and real images have been tested by the proposed method. The experimental results show that the new method is efficient.

The Effect Of Holland's Person-Environment Fit On Trait Anger, Interpersonal Conflict At Work, And Workplace Aggression, Aimee Chantelle Pseekos
Dissertations
This study examined the effect of Person-Environment fit, as defined by Holland's (1997) theory, on trait anger, interpersonal conflict at work, and workplace aggression in a sample of employees in the United States. Job satisfaction was also examined with regard to concurrent and discriminant validity information for this sample. Results indicated that there was not a statistically significant effect of Person- Environment fit on trait anger, interpersonal conflict at work, or workplace aggression. The concurrent and discriminant validity of findings was supported through relationships between job satisfaction, Person-Environment fit, and workplace aggression. Limitations and implications for further research related to …

Gaining Understanding Through Creativity: Comparison Of The Understanding By Design Model And General Creativity Concepts, Michael James Thomas Joseph Bridge
Creative Studies Graduate Student Master's Theses
Results of the analysis presented here indicated that there are clusters of connections which suggest a moderate to strong link between the facets of Creativity and the facets of Understanding. Examining the facets of Perspective, Synthesis, Empathy, Application, Self-Knowledge, and Connect demonstrate the relationship appears to be a mutually supportive symbiosis between the Creativity and Understanding facets. This symbiosis from Creativity strengthens and supports the Understanding facets, and from Understanding strengthens and supports the Creativity facets.

The Leadership Of Emergence: A Complex Systems Leadership Theory Of Emergence At Successive Organizational Levels, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein, Donde Ashmos Plowman
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
Complexity science reframes leadership by focusing on the dynamic interactions between all individuals, explaining how those interactions can, under certain conditions, produce emergent outcomes. We develop a Leadership of Emergence using this approach, through an analysis of three empirical studies which document emergence in distinct contexts. Each of these studies identifies the same four “conditions” for emergence: the presence of a Dis-equilibrium state, Amplifying actions, Recombination/“Self-organization”, and Stabilizing feedback. From these studies we also show how these conditions can be generated through nine specific behaviors which leaders can enact, including: Disrupt existing patterns through embracing uncertainty and creating controversy, Encourage …

All Dissertations
This research develops and empirically tests multiple theory-based models of retail store design strategies. Specifically, we examine the impact that different `bricks and mortar' (store channel) service delivery system design strategies have on merchandise retailer effectiveness; which we measure in terms of satisfaction, operating, and financial performance. We draw our theory from a multidisciplinary literature base in the areas of organizational design, service marketing and operations strategy, retail management, and analyses of capital markets. The aim is to provide insights for advancing service operations research and to offer retail store managers and designers a method to weigh the tradeoffs associated …
Digitally Enhancing Customer Agility And Competitive Activity: How Firms Use Information Technology To Sense And Respond To Market Opportunities In Hypercompetitive Environments, Nicholas Roberts
All Dissertations
This dissertation studies how information technology (IT) facilitates customer agility and, in turn, competitive activity. Customer agility refers to the extent to which a firm is able to sense and respond quickly to customer-based opportunities for innovation and competitive action. As such, customer agility consists of two key dimensions: sensing and responding. We propose that IT plays a critical role in facilitating a firm's customer agility - in particular, its sensing and responding components.
The Internet has spawned a rich set of tools that allow firms to engage in rich, interactive dialogues with a broad and diverse customer base, thereby …

Veto Power And Wealth: Analysis Of The Development Of The Swiss Old Age Security, Christina Zenker
All Works
Switzerland was one of the last OECD-countries to introduce a program for old age security "“ the AHV. For many decades, expenditures both in absolute terms and as a portion of GDP remained low in OECD comparison. In the 1970ies however, expenditures exploded "“ within 10 years, the expenditures as a percentage of GDP doubled. This article explains this astonishing development by applying the veto player theory. Veto player theory is useful to determine changes in the policy stability. The higher the policy stability, the more difficult it is to move away from the political status quo. The lower the …

Plus Ça Change: Innovation And The Spirit Of Enterprise In Tocqueville’S America, Christine Dunn Henderson
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Tocqueville describes the spirit of enterprise—along with the taste for material well-being—as “the distinctive characteristic” of the American people. This paper explores the American spirit of innovation and enterprise, beginning with the centrality of this spirit for America's commercial greatness. Tocqueville observes that the taste for innovation is a part of American national character, and its roots can be traced to the equality of conditions which characterizes democratic life. But the same equality of conditions which promotes the spirit of innovation also can also threaten it, for equality of conditions paradoxically encourages individuals both to rely upon their own judgment …
The Impact Of Exchange Rate Movements On Firm Value In Emerging Markets: The Case Of Mexico, Chrystell Flota
The Impact Of Exchange Rate Movements On Firm Value In Emerging Markets: The Case Of Mexico, Chrystell Flota
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
It is a widely held belief among financial theorists, economic analysts, empirical researchers, and even the financial press, that exchange rate fluctuations ought to affect a firm's cash flow expectations and thus the value of the firm. Previous research has examined the relationship between currency exposure and firm value by focusing primarily on developed economies and on various variables regarding the firm's assets and revenues. The empirical evidence has not fully established what the link is between currency exposure and firm value; however, the evidence suggests that the relationship could be firm-specific, depending on the geographical distribution of the firm's …

Two Essays On Financial Sector Performance In Latin America, Omar M. Al Nassar
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This dissertation consists of two essays on financial sector performance in Latin America. These two essays complement each other so that, when placed together, they are expected to provide policymakers with guidelines on how to design appropriate financial sector reform strategies in an attempt to promote long-term economic development, and thus to attract more foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows not only for Latin American countries, but also for developing countries in general.
Chapter one investigates the extent to which the short and the long-run relationship between financial development and economic growth exists in Latin America. It focuses on two major …

The Influence Of Work Personality On Job Satisfaction: Incremental Validity And Mediation Effects, Daniel Heller, D. Lance Ferris, Douglas Brown, David Watson
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Drawing from recent developments regarding the contextual nature of personality (e.g., D. Wood & B. W. Roberts, 2006), we conducted 2 studies (1 cross-sectional and 1 longitudinal over 1 year) to examine the validity of work personality in predicting job satisfaction and its mediation of the effect of global personality on job satisfaction. Study 1 showed that (a) individuals vary systematically in their personality between roles— they were significantly more conscientious and open to experience and less extraverted at work compared to at home; (b) work personality was a better predictor of job satisfaction than both global personality and home …

Design/methodology/approach – The meta-analysis method is used to combine different data in various studies of one topic into one comprehensive study. More than 30 crises are meta-analyzed. Findings – The CEO needs to step up to revise earlier statements or when the integrity …
Technology Adoption: Influence Of Availability And Accessibility, William S. Mcconnell
Technology Adoption: Influence Of Availability And Accessibility, William S. Mcconnell
All Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Farmers are small business leaders using available technology to remain competitive. The availability of technology is dependent on the suppliers' use of the marketing mix 4Ps theory--product, price, placement, and promotion. The purpose of this study was to determine how the relation between availability and accessibility influences the adoption by rural farmers of new technological innovations, specifically internet services. Results indicated availability factors (product, price, placement, and promotion) positively correlated to accessibility factors (perceived usefulness, ease of use, and behavioral intention). The study provides empirical support for an extended technology acceptance model (TAM) that includes availability factors as external variables.
