Pre-Acquisition Characteristics Of The Acquirers, Rupendra Paliwal Mar 2008

Pre-Acquisition Characteristics Of The Acquirers, Rupendra Paliwal

WCBT Faculty Publications

Existing empirical literature has extensively analyzed post-acquisition performance of the acquirers to evaluate success of the takeover. The academic literature tends to agree that target shareholders benefit from takeovers; however takeovers benefits for acquiring firm’s shareholders have been questioned. A majority of empirical literature indicate acquisition announcements are associated with a decrease in acquiring shareholder’s wealth. While pre-acquisition characteristics of takeover targets have been extensively analyzed, empirical literature has not directly and comprehensively analyzed pre-acquisition financial and operating characteristics of the acquiring firms. In this paper, I examine pre-acquisition operating performance and governance characteristics of acquirers. Results suggest that bidders …

Performance Implications Of Firm Resource Interactions In The Acquisition Of R&D-Intensive Firms, David R. King, Rebecca J. Slotegraaf, Idalene Kesner Mar 2008

Performance Implications Of Firm Resource Interactions In The Acquisition Of R&D-Intensive Firms, David R. King, Rebecca J. Slotegraaf, Idalene Kesner

Management Faculty Research and Publications

We explore the role of resource interactions in explaining firm performance in the context of acquisitions. Although we confirm that acquisitions do not lead to higher performance on average, we do find that complementary resource profiles in target and acquiring firms are associated with abnormal returns. Specifically, we find that acquiring firm marketing resources and target firm technology resources positively reinforce (complement) each other; meanwhile, acquiring and target firm technology resources negatively reinforce (substitute) one another. Implications for management theory and practice are identified.

The Strength Of 'Dispersed' Ties: An Examination In Persistence Of Social Capital Following Organizational Disbanding, R. Drew Sellers Mar 2008

The Strength Of 'Dispersed' Ties: An Examination In Persistence Of Social Capital Following Organizational Disbanding, R. Drew Sellers

Student Scholarship

This study examines social capital persistence following organizational disbanding. It utilizes data collected from a cohort of Arthur Andersen professionals employed in the same U.S. regional office of the firm prior to the 2001 Enron scandal. As predicted by extant research, results support the influence of bonding and utilization relationships. Interestingly, predicted support for bridging relationships was absent. The study also finds that individuals who were dispersed from their original cohort stood to gain more from their social capital, compared to their counterparts who were rehired by competitors with the same cohort after disbanding.

Predictors Of Management Effectiveness: Intelligence, Personality Or Emotional And Social Intelligence?, Raymond Massa Mar 2008

Predictors Of Management Effectiveness: Intelligence, Personality Or Emotional And Social Intelligence?, Raymond Massa

Student Scholarship

This study aims to contribute to the debate in differentiating emotional and social intelligence from intelligence (‘g’ or also referred to as IQ in normal parlance) and personality. A further aim and a consequence of this study is to offer a perspective on predictors of management effectiveness; in particular of Branch Managers in a financial sales environment. Emotional and social intelligence are described as a collection of competencies. Some scholars, however, argue that emotional and social intelligence competencies are merely manifestations of ‘g’ and personality. The question then is to what extent are emotional and social intelligence competencies independent of …

"We Can Do It!": How Clarity Interacts With Collective Efficacy In Organizational Change, Jonathan Coleman Mar 2008

"We Can Do It!": How Clarity Interacts With Collective Efficacy In Organizational Change, Jonathan Coleman

Student Scholarship

Organizations are challenged to adapt to changing conditions on a frequent basis. Leaders of these organizations communicate two critical ideas: clearly defining goals and generating the collective efficacy that those goals can be achieved. This study aims to explore the interrelationships between: (1) how communication develops path-goal clarity and collective efficacy, and (2) how clarity and efficacy interact to lead to the achievement of a performance objective. This paper captures results from a Fortune 100 company undergoing massive transformational change. The findings indicate that collective efficacy has a much stronger relationship to performance than path-goal clarity. For line workers, this …

Regret Aversion And Decision Process Quality: Effect Of Regret Salience On Decision Process Carefulness, Jochen Reb Mar 2008

Regret Aversion And Decision Process Quality: Effect Of Regret Salience On Decision Process Carefulness, Jochen Reb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

A considerable amount of past research has examined the effects of regret aversion on which options decision makers choose. However, past research has largely neglected to address the effect of regret aversion on the decision process. We conducted five experiments to examine the effect of making regret salient on decision process quality. We predicted that increased regret aversion would lead to more careful decision processing. The results consistently supported this prediction across the different decision situations, incentive structures, regret salience manipulations, and dependent variables used. In all experiments making regret salient led decision makers to take significantly longer to reach …

Non-Audit Service Fees And Audit Quality: The Impact Of Auditor Specialization, Chee Yeow Lim, Hun-Tong Tan Mar 2008

Non-Audit Service Fees And Audit Quality: The Impact Of Auditor Specialization, Chee Yeow Lim, Hun-Tong Tan

Research Collection School Of Accountancy

We posit that the effect of non-audit fees on audit quality is conditional on auditor industry specialization. Industry specialist auditors are more likely than nonspecialists to be concerned about reputation losses and litigation exposure, and to benefit from knowledge spillovers from the provision of non-audit services. We find evidence that audit quality measured by increased propensity to issue going-concern opinion, increased propensity to miss analysts' forecasts, as well as higher earnings-response coefficients increases with the level of non-audit services acquired from industry specialist auditors compared to nonspecialist auditors.

The Effect Of Personality And Trust On Virtual Team Effectiveness, Eugene A. Pierce Mar 2008

The Effect Of Personality And Trust On Virtual Team Effectiveness, Eugene A. Pierce

Student Scholarship

Many organizations, such as the Department of Defense (DoD), are using virtual teams to meet the challenges of working globally. These teams are faced with unique challenges due to geographical distance. Literature suggests that trust is especially important in a virtual environment and that team leader personality is suggested to impact team member trust (Handy, l995; Cohen & Bailey, 1997). The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between team leader personality, team member trust and perceived team effectiveness in virtual teamwork. Participants in the study included 873 virtual team members within a combined government (DoD) and commercial …

Can Positive Employees Help Positive Organizational Change? Impact Of Psychological Capital And Emotions On Relevant Attitudes And Behaviors, James Avey, Tara S. Wernsing, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Although much attention has been devoted to understanding employee resistance to change, relatively little research examines the impact that positive employees can have on organizational change. To help fill this need, the authors investigate whether a process of employees’ positivity will have an impact on relevant attitudes and behaviors. Specifically, this study surveyed 132 employees from a broad cross-section of organizations and jobs and found: (a) Their psychological capital (a core factor consisting of hope, efficacy, optimism, and resilience) was related to their positive emotions that in turn were related to their attitudes (engagement and cynicism) and behaviors (organizational citizenship …

Inland Resupply Without A Road Or Runway: Airdrop Solutions Including High-Altitude Precision Systems, Derek L. Williamson

Theses and Dissertations

Given the variety of airdrop options now available, it may be difficult to determine the best mix of paradrop and aircraft types to employ, how the chosen types affect delivery weight capacity and what the least cost would be for the operation while still accomplishing the mission regarding drop zone weight, altitude, offset, and accuracy requirements. This research creates a planning tool to analyze these decisions and also identify trends regarding the best aircraft and paradrop types to use considering cost and capability in a strategic rather than tactical setting. This is accomplished through the formulation of a linear program …

Managing in a contemporary world has become increasingly more complex. It has evolved from a manufacturing setting with little to steer managers but a single, financial indicator to managing a greater percentage of intangible assets through numerous leading and lagging indicators. The industry has also evolved from centrally located and managed to decentralized, multi-national companies. In response to these changes, a new strategic management tool was developed called the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). This management tool has proved successful throughout the last decade. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the implementation and use of Air Force Materiel Command's (AFMC's) …

Liquidity Distribution In The Limit Order Book On The Stock Exchange Of Thailand, Nuttawat Visaltanachoti, Charlie Charoenwong, David K. Ding Mar 2008

Liquidity Distribution In The Limit Order Book On The Stock Exchange Of Thailand, Nuttawat Visaltanachoti, Charlie Charoenwong, David K. Ding

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The liquidity distribution, or the shape of the limit order book, influences trading behavior and choice of order submission by public liquidity suppliers. The present study seeks to discover whether liquidity providers are concerned about being picked off by informed traders, and whether they are less willing to supply liquidity at the market or demand higher price spreads. The results show that liquidity at the market is a small portion of total liquidity, and that firm size, minimum tick size, volatility, and trading volume play significant roles in determining the liquidity distribution within an order book.

A Closer Look At The Frame-Of-Reference Effect In Personality Scale Scores And Validity, Filip Lievens, Wifiried De Corte, Eveline Schollaert Mar 2008

A Closer Look At The Frame-Of-Reference Effect In Personality Scale Scores And Validity, Filip Lievens, Wifiried De Corte, Eveline Schollaert

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article contributes to the understanding of why the use of a frame-of-reference leads to increased criterion-related validity of personality inventories. Two competing explanations are described and tested. A between-subjects (N = 337) and a within-subject (N = 105) study are conducted to test the hypothesized effects of use of a frame of reference on reliability and validity. Regarding the effects on reliability, use of a frame of reference reduces within-person inconsistency (instead of between-person variability) in responding to generic items. Use of a frame of reference further leads to higher validity as a result of the reduction of between-person …

While Hong and his neighbors have, since the early 1980s, concentrated on the small plot of land that the state allocated to them, in recent years, Dounan village has begun producing vegetables in large enough scale to market to distant, wealthy coastal areas, bringing new-found prosperity to the area. After gaining experience producing vegetables both on the plot that the government allocated to his family, and on his neighbors’ …

Advertising And Collusion In Retail Markets, Kyle Bagwell, Gea Myoung Lee Mar 2008

Advertising And Collusion In Retail Markets, Kyle Bagwell, Gea Myoung Lee

Research Collection School Of Economics

We consider non-price advertising by retail firms that are privately informed as to their respective production costs. We first analyze a static model. We construct an advertising equilibrium, in which informed consumers use an advertising search rule whereby they buy from the highest-advertising firm. Consumers are rational in using the advertising search rule, since the lowest-cost firm advertises the most and also selects the lowest price. Even though the advertising equilibrium facilitates productive efficiency, we establish conditions under which firms enjoy higher expected profit when advertising is banned. Consumer welfare falls in this case, however. We next analyze a dynamic …

Further investigation of structural equation modeling demonstrates that higher relationship quality resulted in higher reputation and customer loyalty. The findings will provide travel agency managers with a guideline to develop and implement effective marketing strategies in Chinese tourism …

How A Multidimensional View Of Perceived Organizational Support Impacts Self-Efficacy And Task Understanding During Training For Boundary Spanning Tasks, R. Scott Wallace Mar 2008

How A Multidimensional View Of Perceived Organizational Support Impacts Self-Efficacy And Task Understanding During Training For Boundary Spanning Tasks, R. Scott Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Perceived organizational support (POS), defined as how much employees feel the organization they work for cares for them and assists them in their needs, has been traditionally characterized in a single dimension. This study examines the implications of a multidimensional view of POS. POS was separated into three different dimensions based on the organizational level from which support can be viewed to originate: corporate headquarters, the home office, or the training environment. These dimensions of POS were tested to discover their effect on the self-efficacy and task understanding of individuals training for boundary-spanning tasks. These tasks are those that place …

An Analysis Of The Factors Affecting Training Transfer Within The Work Environment, Daniel J. Williams Mar 2008

An Analysis Of The Factors Affecting Training Transfer Within The Work Environment, Daniel J. Williams
