This paper explores issues about firm sustainability in a time of rapid global change. As a strategist and product development practitioner, I need a better understanding of how those aspects of business intersect today. They are not frequently used in the same sentence; but I believe they come together in a firm’s research & development (R&D) process. Bowie Kuhn once said that he wanted to be remembered as the Baseball Commissioner who presided over a time of tremendous growth in the popularity of the game, and a time when no one questioned the integrity of the game. I read these words over and over again a few weeks ago in many of the obituaries published at the time of the former Commissioner's death. I cannot say that this is how I will remember him, and I do not know how history will remember him.

Key Considerations For Developing Electronic Medical Records Systems: Quantitative Research Study, Edward W. Wright

Student Scholarship

Despite promotion as a national objective, information technology remains relatively underutilized in US healthcare. Building upon an earlier qualitative study investigating the slow adoption of electronic medical records by family practice physicians, I conducted a survey of 368 family practice physician users and found that system ease of use was the only variable that had significant and substantive effects upon medical practice productivity, quality, and satisfaction. We discuss implications for EMR design and a national healthcare record network.

International Transmission Effects Of Volatility Spillovers Between Stock Returns And Exchange Rates: Evidence From Greece, Portugal And Spain Since The Introduction Of The Euro, Lucia Morales

This paper investigates the nature of volatility spillovers between stock returns and exchange rate changes for Greece, Spain and Portugal for the 1999-2006 period after the introduction of the Euro as well as the 1999-2001 and 2002-2003/May and 2003/June-2006 periods since the Euro has been introduced. We use an EGARCH model which takes into account whether bad news has the same impact on volatility as good news. We also investigate whether volatility spillovers between exchange rates and equity markets is stronger for some currencies than others. With multinational corporations increasingly seeking subsidiaries’ specific advantages in foreign countries to develop their innovative capabilities, internationalization of research and development has been greatly emphasized. However, in emerging economies, managers are encountering the challenge of high employee mobility under the weak intellectual property protection regime. This article investigates subsidiaries’ employee mobility and proposes that it negatively moderates the relationship between location advantages and the level of subsidiaries’ R&D. This article extends R&D internationalization and enhances current understanding of subsidiaries’ R&D activities. Further, it provides managerial implications as to how managers can improve R&D outcome by mitigating obstacles in emerging economies.

Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) has grown in incidence and importance over the past few years. However, beyond some expository studies, academic research on this phenomenon is sparse. Further, studies on IT outsourcing have primarily used a transaction cost economics (TCE) lens, and largely neglected other key theoretical explanations of the outsourcing decision and performance. In this dissertation, we examine how process level variables (process value chain position, relational governance, and process maturity) affect the excess stock return of a company. As part of an initiative to move towards greater financial stability in the Asian region, a Regional Monetary Unit is being proposed for the ASEAN+3 nations. These include China, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand. Other countries can be added in the future. Professors Hwee Kwan Chow, Peter N. Kriz, Roberto S. Mariano and Augustine H. H. Tan, from the School of Economics at Singapore Management University, offer their views on the need for a RMU, what its benefits are and how it would work.

Responding to fierce global competition for talent, organisations are increasingly developing and using innovative strategies to attract, hire, and retain employees. One strategy aimed at acquiring top-notch talent has been to consider applicants’ personality traits in the hiring process. One personality trait linked to favourable employee behaviours and attitudes is employee proactivity. Integrating several different literatures, Singapore Management University associate professor of organisational behaviour Gary Greguras, and University of Akron assistant professor of psychology James Diefendorff, developed and tested a model which explicates the processes through which proactivity relates to employee job satisfaction, life satisfaction, performance, and organisational citizenship behaviours.

The recollections of those who worked with Oppenheimer at Los Alamos clearly attribute much of the success of the laboratory to Oppenheimer’s leadership. Of specific interest are: Oppenheimer's efforts in recruiting, his ability to create a sense of meaning and purpose at the laboratory, his technical competence, and his ability to generate commitment and involvement among members of the laboratory.

This experiential exercise addresses a complex and many faceted problem in organizational psychology that is sometimes referred to as false consciousness. By bringing the subconscious into focus, we learn how we got where we are, and more importantly, we learn that while our environment may affect our beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors, we are in no way helpless pawns of our socialization. The exercise is a fun house of mirrors, providing opportunities to address myriad organizational behavior issues. In this article, we describe a modified game of Charades that was developed to facilitate a discussion on the basic principles of effective reward system design. Students are organized into small groups. Incentive schemes are then manipulated so that one player within the group strives for an individual incentive, while the rest of the team play for a group reward. Through this simple and “fun” activity, students learn firsthand what happens when individual and team interests and incentives are not aligned.
