The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) has forever changed corporate governance for publicly held corporations. Recent data suggest that the costs of compliance with the provisions of SOX can be very significant. Problems exist in the government and nonprofit sectors just as they do in the corporate sector. Recent alleged problems at the World Bank include kickbacks, payoffs, bribery, embezzlement, and collusive bidding. In 2002, the United Way scandal came to the public's attention. Its aftermath has had a dramatic impact on fundraising. Even universities are not immune from scandals. Organizations of all kinds should better understand what whistleblowing is, …

The Singapore Management University (SMU) initiated a peer helping program in January 2004 for the purpose of having the helpers act as a “bridge” between the University counseling service and the student community. Over the years, the peer helping program has broadened to include wellness education in addition to providing peer counseling, mentoring and mediation services for the student community. The paper analyses a recent collaborative knowledge transfer project between the Republic of Singapore and the Republic of Indonesia across the Straits of Malacca. The initiative was aimed at supplying the city state at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula with green vegetables from Riau, Indonesia, and to provide technical assistance to Riau farmers on protected cultivation and post-harvest technologies. One way to coordinate the efforts of workers along an assembly line that has fewer workers than work stations is to form a bucket brigade. Each worker in a bucket brigade simultaneously assembles a single item (an instance of the product) along the line. The worker carries the item from work station to work station until either he hands of his item to a downstream co-worker or he completes the work for his item. The worker then walks back to get another item, either from his co-worker upstream or from a buffer at the beginning of the line. The most …

Situated learning theory has emerged as a radical alternative to conventional cognitivist theories of knowledge and learning, emphasizing the relational and structural aspects of learning as well as the dynamics of identity construction. However, although many researchers have embraced the theoretical strengths of this perspective, methodological and operational issues remain undeveloped in the literature. This article seeks to address these deficiencies by developing a conceptual framework informed by situated learning theory and by investigating the methodological implications. The European Union has made a commitment to promoting sustainable mobility through advanced transport logistics. One of the principal areas yet to be addressed is that of the potential barriers to advanced transport logistics and the attitudes of industry to this advancement. This paper addresses some of these concerns and argues that competition for high-value contracts can be very tough, especially where the contracts are from large organisations that often prefer to develop a relationship with only one transport service provider. This research uses a qualitative approach to study the innovative capability of two organizations and the effect of innovation on their E-Commerce initiatives, strategies, and outcomes. The Innovation Strategy Model is used in this research to analyze the innovative capability of two organizations. The case study research methodology was selected and two case studies are presented. The research results show that one organization is more innovative than the other in terms of its innovative capability. A post-study follow-up shows that the organization that was high on innovative capability was very successful in their E-Commerce initiative whereas the other organization was …

This paper describes a meta-model for innovation using an automobile engine as a metaphor. This innovation meta-model is used to manage a collection of innovation models. We develop an algorithm to identify innovations with potential for success using this meta-model. Despite a multitude of studies by M and A researchers, failure rates have not significantly changed for several decades. The current methods, such as using regular search engines, are either ineffective or time consuming. In this work, a new approach for searching people sharing similar interests from the Web, called People-Search, is presented. Islamic finance offers both an equity based system dependent on profit-and-loss sharing modes along with other debt-based instruments that facilitate trade. Using mobile phones to conduct survey interviews has gathered momentum recently. However, using mobile telephones in surveys poses many new challenges. One important challenge involves properly classifying final case dispositions to understand response rates and non-response error and to implement responsive survey designs. Both purposes demand accurate assessments of the outcomes of individual call attempts. By looking at actual practices across three countries, we suggest how the disposition codes of the American Association for Public Opinion Research, which have been developed for telephone surveys, can be modified to fit mobile phones. The priority of the research is thus to establish which criteria are important for destination websites and to determine a mechanism for their measurement. These criteria are divided into both macro- and micro- level metrics which each combine to provide information that is actionable from a business’ perspective. This work lays the foundation for the anticipated outcome of this research, a robust methodology for measuring the effectiveness of destination websites coupled with a suite of actionable eMetrics that will accurately relate to the key business goals of a destination website.

The Effects Of The Small Business Founder’S Need For Cognition On Early Stage Performance, John Leaptrott

This study assesses the relationship between the need for cognition and early stage organizational performance for a sample of small business owners who started new childcare ventures. Their need for cognition was assessed as a predictor of performance that was measured by sales growth. The data supported a significant positive relationship between need for cognition and performance as predicted. This study suggests that the cognitive characteristics of small business owners can influence the performance of their businesses.
