Variable Ticket Pricing In Major League Baseball, Daniel A. Rascher, Chad D. Mcevoy, Mark S. Nagel, Matthew T. Brown
Variable Ticket Pricing In Major League Baseball, Daniel A. Rascher, Chad D. Mcevoy, Mark S. Nagel, Matthew T. Brown
Kinesiology (Formerly Exercise and Sport Science)
Sport teams historically have been reluctant to change ticket prices during the season. Recently, however, numerous sport organizations have implemented variable ticket pricing in an effort to maximize revenues. In Major League Baseball variable pricing results in ticket price increases or decreases depending on factors such as quality of the opponent, day of the week, month of the year, and for special events such as opening day, Memorial Day, and Independence Day. Using censored regression and elasticity analysis, this article demonstrates that variable pricing would have yielded approximately $590,000 per year in additional ticket revenue for each major league team …

Web 2.0: A Social Informatics Perspective, Jonathan P. Allen, Howard Rosenbaum, Pnina Shachaf
Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Strategy
This position paper argues that the Web 2.0 phenomenon is an important object of study for information systems research, and that a social informatics approach to understanding Web 2.0 is particularly relevant and useful. We discuss Wikipedia as an example of empirical research on Web 2.0 that can help bridge the divide between academic and popular discourse on new technology movements.
Auditor’S Independence: Increasing Expectations And Expanding Responsibilities In The Early 1930s, Diane H. Roberts
Auditor’S Independence: Increasing Expectations And Expanding Responsibilities In The Early 1930s, Diane H. Roberts
Accounting
Auditor independence is an aspect of professional ethics crucial to user confidence in contemporary times and the early 1930s. Primary sources that reflect the thinking of the leaders of the accounting profession in the United States are examined to determine the profession's stance on independence issues. The period examined begins with the stock market crash of October 1929 and ends with the American Institute of Accountants' (AIA) fiftieth anniversary meeting in 1937. Thus both events leading up to and immediately following the passage of US Federal Securities Acts of 1933 and 1934 are examined. Although ownership interests in clients and …

What Makes Opera Thrive – Learning From Evaluation In The Performing Arts, Paul Lorton Jr
Business Analytics and Information Systems
For not-for-profit cultural enterprises to survive, they need to learn what makes them worthy of their community’s support for not-for-profit enterprises must secure contributions in addition to the revenues they may generate from their services. This discussion will examine the information contained in the some 500 IRS Form 990 (Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax) report from organizations that classify their activity as “Opera” and present a matrix of goals, achievement and income mixes to build on earlier efforts at defining success for Opera companies. By systematically exploring what the criteria are, how activity is measured against those criteria …
Could The Work System Method Embrace Systems Concepts More Fully, Steven Alter
Could The Work System Method Embrace Systems Concepts More Fully, Steven Alter
Business Analytics and Information Systems
The work system method was developed iteratively with the overarching goal of helping business professionals understand IT-reliant systems in organizations. It uses general systems concepts selectively, and sometimes implicitly. For example, a work system has a boundary, but its inputs are treated implicitly rather than explicitly. This paper asks whether the further development of the work system method might benefit from integrating general systems concepts more completely. After summarizing aspects of the work system method, it dissects some of the underlying ideas and questions how thoroughly even basic systems concepts are applied. It also asks whether and how additional systems …

Engagement Risk: Perceptions And Strategies From Audit Partners, Jack R. Ethridge, Treba Marsh, Bonnie Revelt
Faculty Publications
The audit function creates several important relationships among the various parties. One of the significant and potentially problematic relationships is between the audit firm and the audit client. The decision by the audit firm to accept or retain a client is crucial because of the potential risk of being associated with certain clients. The potential damage can range from financial loss and/or loss of prestige to the ultimate demise of the audit firm. Engagement risk is considered to be composed of three components: entity’s business risk, audit risk, and auditor’s business risk. This research questioned whether audit firms have significantly …

Creating Sustainability Through Corporate Branding, Hayley Lynn Ritz
Creating Sustainability Through Corporate Branding, Hayley Lynn Ritz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis provides a thorough definition of corporate branding, including its benefits when used as a strategic marketing tool. There are many who believe that the logo of a corporation is its brand. However, the logo is only one interpretation of the brand. The brand is the corporation's ethos. It is the fundamental character or spirit of the corporation. It is an expression of who the corporation is. It is the essence that links the corporation's product or service with its consumer through loyalty and emotional attachments. Corporations use various processes and methodologies when they begin to create and enhance …

Why Global Banks Are Banking On India, Knowledge@Smu
Why Global Banks Are Banking On India, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Foreign banks are aggressively expanding in India, both organically and through acquisitions. After playing along the sidelines in the country for more than 100 years, they have galvanized themselves to secure their share -- and more -- of the new action in the rapidly growing economy and a boom in high-profit consumer lending. India's central bank has outlined the roadmap for foreign players to grow, while the banking industry's robust fundamentals and crisis-free track record are other draws. To be sure, the entrenched public sector banks don't relish the charge of foreign banks. But the real rivals on the competing …

Guangdong Huadi Group: How A Non-Family Business Manages To Thrive In China, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
With the development of a market economy in China, private companies have attracted more attention from academic researchers. For example, scholars Wang Xuanyu, Li Xingchun and Chen Ling analyzed Guangdong Huadi Group, a well-known Chinese manufacturer of household appliances based in Guangdong, a province in south China, in order to identify those factors that contribute to the success of a non-family business. The results of their study are in a paper titled, “Capital Joint-Venture and Trust Expansion--Research on non-family Entrepreneurial Partnership”.

"That was the moment I started to understand: I am totally responsible for my own success," said Breen, whose first job out of college was unloading shipments of toys at Marshall Fields.

The 'Myth Of Market Share': Can Focusing Too Much On The Competition Harm Profitability?, Knowledge@Smu
Knowledge@SMU
Business has long been likened to warfare, according to Wharton marketing professor Scott Armstrong, so it is hardly surprising that companies strive to beat their competitors and wrest away as much market share as possible. But such efforts not only waste time and energy, they can actually be detrimental to the firm's profitability, according to Armstrong. Based on new research and examples from today's business environment, Armstrong and co-author Kesten Green suggest that overemphasis on market share is the wrong approach. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Firm Performance As A Function Of Entrepreneurial Orientation And Strategic Planning Practices, James W. Kroeger
Firm Performance As A Function Of Entrepreneurial Orientation And Strategic Planning Practices, James W. Kroeger
ETD Archive
New business creation is essential for our nation's economy and accounts for all net new job creation. However, 56 of small businesses fail within four years of startup. One way to address this issue is to employ an approach combining an entrepreneurial orientation (EO) with key strategic management planning practices for firms seeking to gain a competitive advantage and improve firm performance. Entrepreneurial orientation is the propensity of firms to be innovative, proactive, and be willing to take risks. This research project empirically investigated the relationship among a firm's scanning intensity, locus of planning, planning flexibility and entrepreneurial orientation and …

Does Understanding National Business Cultures Help Build Regional Development?, Amanda Ratcliffe, Thomas Cooney Dr.
Conference proceedings
An EFER report in 1995 observed that little of the growth ofEurope’s top 500 companies came from existing products in existing markets, but almost two-thirds of the growth came from entering new markets. A large majority of Europe’s 500 are active in export markets, with exports accounting for 40% of their turnover as opposed to the 10% export share for SMEs overall. One of the critical reasons for the poor performance of SMEs within the international arena is their ignorance of local business cultures. Yet for a country – or a specific region – to achieve strong economic growth, it …

The Need For Wider Supply Chain Management Adoption: Empirical Results From Ireland, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney
Articles
Purpose - Empirical results are provided which suggest that there is a need for more widespread adoption of supply chain management among Irish firms.
Design/methodology/approach - The Republic of Ireland is a small, open, trade-dependent economy and is one of the fastest growing economies in the developed world. However, due to rising costs, there is an increasing trend in Ireland to outsource lower function manufacturing processes to lower cost locations but to retain high skill functions (such as R&D). This trend, together with other factors such as its peripheral location, suggests that supply chain management is critical from an Irish …

Human Resource Accounting, Sam Lilley
Human Resource Accounting, Sam Lilley
The Corinthian
How should human resources be accounted for? This has been a question for a long time. Employees can be viewed as a company's biggest asset, but because the value of human resources can be difficult to measure, it is often not reported. When the value of human resources or assets is not recognized on the financial statements, the value of the organization is understated.
Performance Pay Plans, Sailaja Potaraju
Performance Pay Plans, Sailaja Potaraju
The Corinthian
Organizations invest vast amounts of capital into devising and implementing compensation plans for their employees. The compensation scheme they choose can be used to subtly synchronize the employee's personal objectives with that of the organization. The focus of this paper will be on performance or incentive pay schemes, which are often used to increase efficiency and productivity in an organization.

Customer Behavior In An Online Ordering Application, Walter Lee Booker
The Corinthian
The purpose in writing this paper is to exemplify how the online activity of customers has changed the playing field of retail sales over the years. Online retail sales have increased substantially over the past few years. For example, sales reached a staggering $14.8 billion in the November 1 to December 26, 2004 time period: a 29% increase over the same period in 2003. More importantly, online sales growth has consistently outpaced in-store sales growth-in-store sales rose only 4.5% in the same period mentioned above.
