The Emerging Academic Discipline Of Knowledge Management, Martin Grossman Jan 2007

The Emerging Academic Discipline Of Knowledge Management, Martin Grossman

Management Faculty Publications

Although knowledge management (KM) has gained worldwide recognition as an important strategic imperative, its integration into academia has lagged. A review of the literature, as well as an examination of information systems (IS) curriculum models, was performed to determine how KM related courses are being integrated. The analysis revealed that KM is still not considered appropriate as an integral component of the undergraduate IS curriculum; rather it is more prevalent in optional courses or those covering advanced topics, and integrated into the curriculum at the graduate level. The sluggish adoption of KM into mainstream academia is countered by an increasing …

During this time, Christy was a Department of Pictorial Publicity (DPP) committee artist commissioned by the committee chair, Charles Dana Gibson. The DPP was part of the Committee on Public Information (CPI) developed by the Woodrow Wilson administration to generate the propaganda necessary to gain the support of the American people to enter World War I. Evaluating Short-Term Tourism Economic Effects In Confined Economies: Conceptual And Empirical Considerations, Robertico Croes, Denver E. Severt Jan 2007

Evaluating Short-Term Tourism Economic Effects In Confined Economies: Conceptual And Empirical Considerations, Robertico Croes, Denver E. Severt

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Given the necessary involvement of government with the tourism product, accountability for government's expenditures of tax dollars is of increasing importance. This paper discusses the literature for three types of analyses that governments can use to ascertain the effectiveness of their spending of tax dollars to promote a tourism destination. The shortcomings and benefits for each method are discussed. Conclusions based on the type of method chosen require that the user understand the specific context, time horizon and their need for the study. For the case study presented in this paper, the context of a confined area, the time horizon …

Enhancing Performance By Salvaging Route Reply Messages In On-Demand Routing Protocols For Manets, Rendong Bai, Mukesh Singhal, Yi Luo

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Researchers prefer on-demand routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks where resources such as energy and bandwidth are constrained. In these protocols, a source discovers a route to a destination typically by flooding the entire or a part of the network with a route request (RREQ) message. The destination responds by sending a route reply (RREP) message to the source. The RREP travels hop by hop on the discovered route in the reverse direction or on another route to the source. Sometimes the RREP can not be sent to the intended next hop by an intermediate node due to node …

Steve Ballmer Speaks Passionately About Microsoft, Leadership ... And Passion, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

For Microsoft, 2006 was a year of new product introductions: the Windows Vista operating system, a new version of Office and the Zune music player, to name a few. For Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer -- who spoke at Wharton recently as part of the school's Leadership Lecture series -- these new products serve as a reminder of his goals: Convince customers that Microsoft's latest products are ground-breaking, transform a company with $44 billion in sales into an agile innovator, compete against new business models and recruit enough talent to keep the software giant relevant 25 years from now.

Post Haste: Why Pitney Bowes Wants To Automate India's Mailstream, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

How big is the mailbag of the world's most populous democracy? In a recent annual report, the Indian Department of Posts claims that its mail traffic was 8.6 billion pieces in 2003-04. In 2004-05, it says, that number dipped to 7.4 billion. Sound like a business in gradual decline? Not so, say executives at Pitney Bowes, the U.S.-based provider of mail management services, which has $5.5 billion in annual revenues and more than 35,000 employees worldwide. Two years ago Pitney Bowes took over its Indian distributor to set up shop in that country. How has its foray fared so far? …

Webs Of Power: Multiple Ownership In Tourism Destinations, Ziene Mottiar, Hazel Tucker Jan 2007

Webs Of Power: Multiple Ownership In Tourism Destinations, Ziene Mottiar, Hazel Tucker

Articles

It has been widely noted in the tourism small business literature that collaboration between groups of businesses operating within clusters contributes both to business development and the success of destinations and regions. This paper aims to contribute to the research on tourism destination networks by focusing on multiple ownership, or portfolio entrepreneurship, when more than one small or micro business within a specific destination are owned by the same entrepreneur. Courtown, in Ireland and Göreme in Turkey are presented as two case studies in which the existence of multiple owners was identified. The implications of multiple ownership on tourism operation …

Broadening The Entrepreneurial Perspective, Ziene Mottiar, Sarah Ingle

Articles

In this paper entrepreneurial literature is combined with industrial district literature to try and explain regional success in an Irish industrial sector. A new approach called interpreneurship is introduced as an explanatory concept for regional success in an Irish case study. A number of conclusions are drawn regarding the extent to which the interpreneurship approach is valid and the authors recommend that this is an important concept for further research.

Oxytocin Increases Generosity In Humans, Paul J. Zak, Angela Stanton, Sheila Ahmadi Jan 2007

Oxytocin Increases Generosity In Humans, Paul J. Zak, Angela Stanton, Sheila Ahmadi

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Human beings routinely help strangers at costs to themselves. Sometimes the help offered is generous-offering more than the other expects. The proximate mechanisms supporting generosity are not well-understood, but several lines of research suggest a role for empathy. In this study, participants were infused with 40 IU oxytocin (OT) or placebo and engaged in a blinded, one-shot decision on how to split a sum of money with a stranger that could be rejected. Those on OT were 80% more generous than those given a placebo. OT had no effect on a unilateral monetary transfer task dissociating generosity from altruism. OT …

Lifestyle Entrepreneurs And Spheres Of Inter-Firm Relations: The Case Of Westport Co. Mayo, Ireland, Ziene Mottiar Jan 2007

Lifestyle Entrepreneurs And Spheres Of Inter-Firm Relations: The Case Of Westport Co. Mayo, Ireland, Ziene Mottiar

Articles

A relatively small body of literature in tourism which concentrates on the issues of small firms and entrepreneurs and ‘this area of inquiry is vastly under-researched’ (Thomas, 2004, p.1). A key piece of research (Rimmington et al, 1999) classifies entrepreneurs in the tourism sector and one category which has received research attention has been that of lifestyle entrepreneurs. This article outlines the literature on lifestyle entrepreneurs and concludes that much of the focus to date has been on the individual entrepreneur. This current paper investigates how lifestyle entrepreneurs interact with other entrepreneurs in the destination in which they operate, and …

Two-Stage Least Squares: Simultaneous Determination Of Days On Market And Length Of Listing Contract, Matthew Joseph Davis Jan 2007

Two-Stage Least Squares: Simultaneous Determination Of Days On Market And Length Of Listing Contract, Matthew Joseph Davis

Theses & Honors Papers

Over eight million new and existing homes are sold each year, while every seller has a similar objective; to simultaneously maximize sales price and minimize the duration the home is on the market. There is no predetermined manner in which to select how long one should list the property with a broker, if the seller decides to not sell the property themselves, or how long a broker will need to sell the property. Numerous studies have been conducted to examine various factors affecting days on market (DOM), while no research has been conducted on the effect length of contract (LOC) …
