On The Relevance Of Political Philosophy To Business Ethics, Jeffrey Moriarty Jan 2005

On The Relevance Of Political Philosophy To Business Ethics, Jeffrey Moriarty

Philosophy Faculty Publications

The central problems of political philosophy (e.g., legitimate authority, distributive justice) mirror the central problems of business ethics. The question naturally arises: should political theories be applied to problems in business ethics? If a version of egalitarianism is the correct theory of justice for states, for example, does it follow that it is the correct theory of justice for businesses? If states should be democratically governed by their citizens, should businesses be democratically managed by their employees? Most theorists who have considered these questions, including John Rawls in Political Liberalism, and Robert Phillips and Joshua Margolis in a 1999 article, …

Earnings Whisper Forecasts As Predictors Of Security Returns: Support For The Miller Price Optimism Model, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington Jan 2005

Earnings Whisper Forecasts As Predictors Of Security Returns: Support For The Miller Price Optimism Model, Rebecca Abraham, Charles Harrington

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This study provides empirical support for the Miller (1977) model which sets forth that security returns reflect the opinions of optimists in markets where more rational and pessimistic trading is excluded by high short-sale costs. Using the differential between earnings whisper forecasts and analysts’ consensus forecasts as a proxy for heterogeneous expectations of earning, this study finds that for stacks with higher differentials, optimistic valuations dominate resulting in significantly lower future security returns than for stocks with lower differentials. Low differentials stacks are shown to resemble value stacks while high differential stocks display the characteristics of glamour stocks.

Measuring Managerial Effectiveness During The Implementation Of Service Strategies, Bryant Mitchell, Lawrence Fredendall, Stephen Cantrell Jan 2005

Measuring Managerial Effectiveness During The Implementation Of Service Strategies, Bryant Mitchell, Lawrence Fredendall, Stephen Cantrell

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

In service firms performance is contingent upon the operations strategy being pursued. However, little research has been reported which empirically examines the implementation of operations strategy in service firms. We argue that implementing fill operation strategy in service is primarily done through the use of human resources. We then test the proposition that in service firms the most effective operations managers are the ones that make the most effective use of their human resources. This paper develop measures of strategic implementation and tests hypotheses about the effect of strategic implementation on firm performance using published data from the National Basketball …

Performance Implications Of Customer Relationship Management Strategy And Market Orientation Organizational Capabilities, Claudio Carpano, Michael Martin Ph.D., Mary C. Martin Ph.D., Hermann Ndofor Jan 2005

Performance Implications Of Customer Relationship Management Strategy And Market Orientation Organizational Capabilities, Claudio Carpano, Michael Martin Ph.D., Mary C. Martin Ph.D., Hermann Ndofor

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Customer relationship management can be a costly solution to implement and many of these initiatives fail to deliver their intended results. Several reasons may exist that explain why such programs fail, and this study attempts to explain CRM in terms of its use as a company strategy that when combined with the market orientation of a firm, can lead to improved company performance. By using contingency theory to develop that a "match" between culture and strategy allows a firm to better perform, an attempt will be made to establish a relationship between CRM strategy implementation and market orientation. A methodology …

Exploring Linkages Between Business Strategy And Patent Strategy: A Proposed Typology, Steven Popejoy Jan 2005

Exploring Linkages Between Business Strategy And Patent Strategy: A Proposed Typology, Steven Popejoy

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This paper is an attempt to develop a typology which would theoretically represent the relationship between a patent strategy and a business strategy in a given organization. Such a relationship follows from previous work in related fields which theories a linkage between business strategy and functional strategy that can have a positive impact on organizational performance. An underling assumption is made that intellectual capital represents a functional area for today's high tech firm. In creating the proposed typology, use is made of the Miles and Snow typology of business strategies.

The Reference Group Influence On Cell Phone Purchasing Behavior: Research On Chinese Youth, Xe (Stephen) Xihao Jan 2005

The Reference Group Influence On Cell Phone Purchasing Behavior: Research On Chinese Youth, Xe (Stephen) Xihao

The Corinthian

The cell phone has experienced a change from a private luxury product into a public necessity product in the late 1990s China. According to consumer behavior theories, individuals would be significantly influenced by their reference groups when making a purchasing decision of a certain commodity such as the cell phone. The reference group influence encompasses three types: informational influence, utilitarian influence, and value-expressive influence. This paper utilizes the empirical research method to investigate the three types of reference group influence on Chinese youth's cell phone purchasing behavior. The research results indicate that reference groups have a significant influence on cell …

The Effects Of Land Transport On Animal Welfare, D. M. Broom Jan 2005

The Effects Of Land Transport On Animal Welfare, D. M. Broom

Transport of Farm Animals Collection

Animal welfare during and as a result of transport can be assessed by using a range of behavioural, physiological, pathological and carcass-quality indicators that are described in this paper. Measures of the extent of any disease, injury or mortality resulting from, or exacerbated by, transport are important because health is an important part of welfare. Many of the indicators are measures of stress as they involve long-term adverse effects on the individual. Factors affecting the welfare of animals before, during and after transport which are discussed are: definition of the responsibilities and competence, attitudes to animals and need for training …

Third Cybernetic Revolution: Beyond Open To Dialogic System Theories, Khadija Al Arkoubi Jan 2005

Third Cybernetic Revolution: Beyond Open To Dialogic System Theories, Khadija Al Arkoubi

Management Faculty Publications

We question Systems Theory by adopting a Bakhtinian dialogism approach. We argue that a dialogism approach gets us beyond first order cybernetic (control) and second order (open) system thinking to a third order cybernetics (multi- dialogisms). We believe third order cybernetic theory is an extension of Bakhtin's work. We explore how dialogue is not equivalent to polyphonic dialogism; the later does not assume being in same time and space, as in some meeting. Further, we look at three other dialogisms (stylistic, chronotopic, & architectonic). Multi- dialogisms raise questions for dialog, learning, and appreciative inquiry approaches. We conclude with insights on …

Illinois Work-Based Learning Programs: Worksite Mentor Knowledge And Training, Julie A. Chadd, Marcia A. Anderson

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Teacher-coordinators and worksite mentors of high school work-based learning programs throughout Illinois were the subjects of this study which described worksite mentors' knowledge of teaching work skills to students participating in work-based learning programs and the nature of the training provided to these worksite mentors. There were no statistically significant differences in knowledge of teaching among worksite mentors based on attendance at training. Informal training was offered to worksite mentors most often to acquaint them with work-based learning program procedures. Worksite mentors who did not attend training stated it was not offered while those who attended formal training rated it …

The Characteristics Of “Necessity” In A Work Place: A Replication Study, Chong W. Kim, Andrew Sikula Sr. Jan 2005

The Characteristics Of “Necessity” In A Work Place: A Replication Study, Chong W. Kim, Andrew Sikula Sr.

Management Faculty Research

As defined in our previous paper (Kim and Sikula, 2003), there could be three types of person and roles they play in the workplace: Necessity, Common and Parasite. A Necessity is the one who is an irreplaceable person. A Common is a worker of average ability and talent, and a Parasite is an employee free-loader who is a moocher more than a contributor.

The purpose of this paper is to replicate the first paper, and compare the results of two data sets. The data for the first paper collected from 34 undergraduate senior students in an Organizational Behavior (OB) class, …

Reaching Out: Alumni Outreach For The Rueckert-Hartman School For Health Professions, Mary Catherine Lumpp

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Regis University Alumni and Parent Relations Department reaches out to generations of former students, and with University growth the challenge of this continually increases. Ways the Department can enhance support to graduates of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions (RHSHP) were explored through varied media. The action research included interviews, an alumni survey, consultation with sister Jesuit schools, and review of secondary literature specific to the topic of alumni associations and organizational change. Results suggest that the Alumni and Parent Relations Department must openly communicate with the leadership of RHSHP in order to succeed in supporting the unique needs …

Supply Chain Learning Needs: Towards A Port Community Perspective, Edward Sweeney, Pietro Evangelista Jan 2005

Supply Chain Learning Needs: Towards A Port Community Perspective, Edward Sweeney, Pietro Evangelista

Articles

The traditional role of ports in the wider supply chain context is currently being subject to a process
of radical review. In broad terms, the traditional model is being replaced by a model which focuses on higher value and more knowledge intensive activities. This trend requires a change in the way in which new knowedge and skills are developed by staff in companies of all kinds within port communities. Traditional models need to be re-evaluated to reflect the increasing importance of knowledge and skills acquisition, particularly in relation to the supply chain management (SCM) concept and the evolving role of …

Behavioral Factors In Strategic Alliances, Purnendu Mandal, Dale H. Shao, Chong W. Kim Jan 2005

Behavioral Factors In Strategic Alliances, Purnendu Mandal, Dale H. Shao, Chong W. Kim

Management Faculty Research

Recently, there has been a growing trend among information technology (IT) organizations to form strategic alliances to increase competitive advantages in the marketplace. For an organization to exploit the benefits of alliances, human factors and IT factors must be among the basic components of any strategic plan (Kemeny & Yanowitz, 2000). Despite the obvious need to consider human and IT factors when developing a long-term plan, many strategic plans developed in the past that led to alliances have failed to consider human aspects. Examples of failure in the implementation of IT systems due to the lack of consideration of human …
