Performance Evaluation Models For Strategic Decision-Making: Towards A Hybrid Model, Geraldina Villalobos Quezada Dec 2005

Performance Evaluation Models For Strategic Decision-Making: Towards A Hybrid Model, Geraldina Villalobos Quezada

Dissertations

Performance management systems serve strategic, administrative, and developmental purposes; therefore, their role in an organization cannot be overestimated. As a function of this strategic role, different evaluation models have been developed and implemented by organizations: BSC, CIPP, TQM, Six Sigma, and AOP.

Following a review of current evaluation theory and practice models that focus on improving strategic decision-making in organizations, four research questions were developed that sought to identify the interrelationships, evaluation components, evaluation indicators, data collected to support the evaluation, evaluation implementation protocols, quantitative and qualitative analyses, outcomes, and critical factors of the BSC and CIPP models.

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong Training Academy: Achieving Business Results, Vida W. Chow

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The purpose of this study is to identify the essential elements, both tangible and intangible, of establishing a training academy at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong in order to achieve business objectives in a rapidly changing and competitive global environment in the hospitality industry. With the phenomenal growth of the tourism industry in Hong Kong, Macau, and the neighboring area in China, there is a growing competition in acquiring, retaining, and developing talents in the labor market. Having a well-established training academy is not only critical in consistently delivering the brand promises to the external customers, it is also fundamental …

Examining The Relationship Between Employer Knowledge Dimensions And Organizational Attractiveness: An Application In A Military Context, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye, Bert Schreurs Dec 2005

Examining The Relationship Between Employer Knowledge Dimensions And Organizational Attractiveness: An Application In A Military Context, Filip Lievens, Greet Van Hoye, Bert Schreurs

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study uses Cable and Turban's (2001) employer knowledge framework as a conceptual model to formulate hypotheses about a broad range of possible factors affecting the attractiveness of an organization (i.e. armed forces) among potential applicants (576 high-school seniors). Results show that gender, familiarity with military organizations, perceptions of job and organizational attributes (task diversity and social/team activities), and trait inferences (excitement, prestige, and cheerfulness) explained potential applicants' attraction to military organizations. Relative importance analyses showed that trait inferences contributed most to the variance, followed by job and organizational attributes, and employer familiarity. Finally, we found some evidence of interactions …

Retest Effects In Operational Selection Settings: Development And Test Of A Framework, Filip Lievens, Tine Buyse, Paul R. Sackett Dec 2005

Retest Effects In Operational Selection Settings: Development And Test Of A Framework, Filip Lievens, Tine Buyse, Paul R. Sackett

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study proposes a framework for examining the effects of retaking tests in operational selection settings. A central feature of this framework is the distinction between within-person and between-person retest effects. This framework is used to develop hypotheses about retest effects for exemplars of 3 types of tests (knowledge tests, cognitive ability tests, and situational judgment tests) and to test these hypotheses in a high stakes selection setting (admission to medical studies in Belgium). Analyses of within-person retest effects showed that mean scores of repeat test takers were one-third of a standard deviation higher for the knowledge test and situational …

The Risk Of Adverse Impact In Selections Based On A Test With Known Effect Size, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens Oct 2005

The Risk Of Adverse Impact In Selections Based On A Test With Known Effect Size, Wilfried De Corte, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors derive the exact sampling distribution function of the adverse impact (AI) ratio for single-stage, top-down selections using tests with known effect sizes. Subsequently, it is shown how this distribution function can be used to determine the risk that a future selection decision on the basis of such tests will result in an outcome that reflects the presence of AI. The article therefore provides test and selection practitioners with a valuable tool to decide between alternative selection predictors.

Cultural Diversity In Multinational Organisations, Marian Crowley-Henry Sep 2005

Cultural Diversity In Multinational Organisations, Marian Crowley-Henry

Conference papers

With the rhetoric in international management espousing the value of being able to access and capitalise on the knowledge of a workforce with international experience in order to compete globally and the need to embrace diversity (including cultural or ethnic diversity) in and across organisations, this paper discusses the findings from a qualitative research undertaking where senior and middle managers working for multinational organisations in a cross-section of industry sectors were interviewed. A total of twenty in-depth interviews were conducted with “foreign” managers based in Europe, the majority hired on local contracts. The findings presented in this paper outline the …

Recruitment-Related Information Sources And Organizational Attractiveness: Can Something Be Done About Negative Publicity?, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens Sep 2005

Recruitment-Related Information Sources And Organizational Attractiveness: Can Something Be Done About Negative Publicity?, Greet Van Hoye, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The present study begins to fill a gap in the recruitment literature by investigating whether the effects of negative publicity on organizational attractiveness can be mitigated by recruitment advertising and positive word-of-mouth. The accessibility-diagnosticity model was used as a theoretical framework to formulate predictions about the effects of these recruitment-related information sources. A mixed 2 x 2 experimental design was applied to examine whether initial assessments of organizational attractiveness based on negative publicity would improve at a second evaluation after exposure to a second, more positive information source. We found that both recruitment advertising and word-of-mouth improved organizational attractiveness, but …

The Importance Of Traits And Abilities In Supervisors' Hirability Decisions As A Function Of Method Of Assessment, Filip Lievens, Scott Highhouse, Wilfried De Corte Sep 2005

The Importance Of Traits And Abilities In Supervisors' Hirability Decisions As A Function Of Method Of Assessment, Filip Lievens, Scott Highhouse, Wilfried De Corte

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Past research on the importance of traits and abilities in supervisors' hirability decisions has ignored the influence of the selection method used to derive information about these traits and abilities. In this study, experienced retail store supervisors (N = 163) rated job applicant profiles that were described on the Big Five and General Mental Ability (GMA) personality dimensions. Contrary to past studies, the supervisors were also informed about the method of assessment used (paper-and-pencil test vs. unstructured interview). Hierarchical linear modelling analyses showed that the importance attached to extraversion and GMA was significantly moderated by the selection method, with extraversion …

Can Emotional Intelligence Be Increased Through Training?: An Experimental Study, Jane Murray, Peter Jordan, S Hall-Thompson Aug 2005

Can Emotional Intelligence Be Increased Through Training?: An Experimental Study, Jane Murray, Peter Jordan, S Hall-Thompson

Jane Murray

The training of emotional intelligence in organizations continues to be the subject of much academic discussion. Since the emotional intelligence construct first began to gain attention in the early 1990's academics and practitioners alike have debated whether the skills and abilities associated with emotional intelligence can be learned. As the debate continues, organizations maintain their investment in emotional intelligence training programs that propose to increase the emotional intelligence of individuals, and also increase their overall workplace performance. In this paper we identify specific emotional intelligence skills and abilities that can be trained, and compare these skills to current emotional intelligence …

Does Training Increase Emotional Intelligence In Groups And Group Performance?, Peter Jordan, Jane Murray Aug 2005

Does Training Increase Emotional Intelligence In Groups And Group Performance?, Peter Jordan, Jane Murray

Jane Murray

In this presentation we will discuss the results of a study examining the efficacy of training emotional intelligence skills and abilities in groups. While performance differences have been found between groups with members that average high in emotional intelligence and groups with members with average low in emotional intelligence (Jordan & Troth, 2004), other longitudinal research suggests that these performance differences were minimized the longer the groups worked together (Jordan, Ashkanasy, Hartel, & Hooper, 2002). Thus, we present a field study that examines this question at a greater level of depth.

Work And Family Conflict: Does Home-Based Telework Make A Difference?, Susan R. Madsen Aug 2005

Work And Family Conflict: Does Home-Based Telework Make A Difference?, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

Organizations continually seek to find ways to improve the performance of individuals, groups, and the entire organization. Research has shown that, when employees’ work-family conflict levels are reduced, performance in the workplace can be increased. How to reduce these levels, however, is a complex task. One claim that has been made, but not thoroughly researched, is that teleworking can assist employees in reducing their work-family conflict. This empirical study researched the effects of home-based teleworking on work-family conflict. Its purpose was to investigate the differences in work and family conflict (i.e., overall, forms, directions) between full-time worksite employees and full-time …

Sorry, But It's The Law: The Westernization Of Islam, Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

Gwendolyn Yvonne Alexis

The last quartile of the 20th Century vastly changed the religio-cultural landscape of the West. Previously the stronghold of Christianity, the West has entered into a period of deep diversity as a result of the unprecedented level of migration of non-Western, non-Christian peoples to western destinations. These new immigrants, with their foreign cultures and unfamiliar religions, came westward with the full expectation that they--like the diverse array of Christian emigrants who migrated westward decades before--would fully enjoy religious liberty in nations long heralded for their commitment to democratic principles and respect for civil rights. How are these immigrants faring on …

Personal Or Organisational Control? A Critical Perspective From The Multinational’S International Assignees, Marian Crowley-Henry, David Weir Jul 2005

Personal Or Organisational Control? A Critical Perspective From The Multinational’S International Assignees, Marian Crowley-Henry, David Weir

Conference papers

This paper presents findings from a qualitative study of non-national employees of multinational organisations based in Sophia Antipolis (South of France). Here twenty-three in-depth interviews with non-nationals employed by a multinational in the area, together with contextual data regarding the particular case of Sophia Antipolis contribute to the discussion on power and control in an international, organisational context. Irrespective of the initial motivations to follow on an international career, this study highlights the tensions individuals encounter in their desire to retain their international status while seeking out a more individual, balanced, protean career, potentially beyond their current employing organisations. The Highs And Lows Of Emotional Intelligence: How Does Emotional Labour And Workplace Training Affect Emotional Intelligence, Peter Jordan, Jane Murray

Jane Murray

The emotional intelligence construct continues to attract significant attention, research and investment from industrial and organisational psychologists, practitioners and organisations worldwide. This symposium presents some of the most recent academic and practitioner work being conducted in the area of emotional intelligence in Australia. Specifically, this symposium examines how these differing areas of research interrelate to increase our understanding of the affects emotional intelligence has on individuals in organisations. In total, three papers will be presented. The first presentation provides an overview of emotional intelligence from a practitioner perspective. In particular, this presentation focuses on some misconceptions that are currently impeding …

Emotions At Work: What Emotions Dominate Working Lives?, Peter Jordan, Jane Murray Jun 2005

Emotions At Work: What Emotions Dominate Working Lives?, Peter Jordan, Jane Murray

Jane Murray

There has been extensive research on peoples' experience of emotions at work. In particular, Weiss and Cropanzano's (1996) affective events theory has provided the research community with a model that enables emotions to be identified as influencing specific events in the workplace. While this model deals with the generation of emotion in response to specific events we are yet to understand what recent affective memories individuals have of their workplace. This is significant as these memories can contribute to an overall affective climate within organisations. In this study, data were collected from 365 individuals across 16 workplaces. Respondents were asked …

Increasing Emotional Intelligence: Presenting The Results Of A Training Intervention, Jane Murray, Peter Jordan, Neal Ashkanasy

Jane Murray

This poster presents the results of an eighteen month study examining the impact of an emotions focused training intervention on emotional intelligence. In total 280 staff from a large Queensland public sector organisation attended a two-day training program that focused upon imparting the skills and abilities associated with Mayer and Salovey's (1997) four-branches of emotional intelligence (awareness, understanding, facilitation and management of emotions). Utilising an experimental methodology, the experimental group's emotional intelligence was tested prior to the commencement of training and again after the training had been completed using the Workgroup Emotional Intelligence Profile (WEIP-6; Jordan, Ashkanasy, Härtel, & Hooper, …

Theories Of The Employment Relationship: Choosing Between Norms And Contracts, Michael L. Wachter Jun 2005

Theories Of The Employment Relationship: Choosing Between Norms And Contracts, Michael L. Wachter

All Faculty Scholarship

In this paper, I analyze three types of labor market relationships that are prevalent in the economy - the external labor market that exists outside of firms, and the union and nonunion employment relationships that exist inside firms. The parties' relationships in each of these markets are markedly different from one another with respect to their use of contracts versus norms, their enforcement mechanisms, and their reliance on external competitive market pressures. Why do these very distinct forms exist? This paper provides an answer to this question. To be successful, each of the structures has to resolve problems of match-specific …

Effects Of Career Plateauing On Turnover: A Test Of A Model, Christine Y. Rilovick Jun 2005

Effects Of Career Plateauing On Turnover: A Test Of A Model, Christine Y. Rilovick

Theses and Dissertations

The structure of most organizations dictates that only 1% of the employees will retire before they reach a career plateau. It is estimated that the number of people perceiving they are career plateaued will only increase in the future since more unusually well-qualified candidates will be competing for a diminishing number of positions. Given that an estimated 80% of the work conducted in organizations is performed by employees who are career plateaued, it would be beneficial to better understand if these plateaued individuals are likely to remain with the organization despite being plateaued. Therefore adding career plateauing to an existing …

With A Little Help From My Friends (And Substitutes): Social Referents And Influence In Psychological Contract Fulfillment, Violet Ho

Management Faculty Publications

This study investigated employees’ choice of social referents and the impact of social influence on their beliefs of psychological contract fulfillment. Using data from a field study conducted with 99 employees in a research organization, we found that one’s referent choice varied with the domain of promise evaluated. When evaluating the organization’s fulfillment of organization-wide promises, employees’ referents were primarily coworkers with whom they had close direct ties, namely, friends and advice givers. On the other hand, when evaluating the fulfillment of job-related promises, employees’ referents were mainly fellow workers who could substitute for them and people with whom they …
