Online Privacy Policies: An Assessment Of The Fortune Global 100, Randy Ryker, M. Khurrum S. Bhutta

Journal of International Information Management

Both industry leaders and government officials around the globe are struggling with how to address online privacy. One solution suggested by both groups within the United States is for companies to voluntarily comply with the fair information practices of Notice, Choice, Access, and Security. A content analysis of the online privacy policies of the firms in the Fortune Global 100 was conducted to determine the extent to which the most successful global companies comply with fair information practices. The results indicate that 1.2% fully complies, 87.2% partially comply and 11.6%) fail to comply with one or more fair information practice.

Leveraging Information Technology To Gain Competitive Advantage: A Case Study On General Electric Consumer Products, Bih-Ru Lea

The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of merging General Electric Lighting (GEL) and General Electric Appliance (GEA) into General Electric Consumer Products (GECP) and how IT strategies are used to gain competitive advantages in its industry. This study will analyze major IT projects being developed and implemented in relation to their impact on major information flows, organizational structure, IT architecture, control systems, and the labor characteristics of the ITfunction. Alternatives to achieve integration will then be discussed and recommendations will be proposed.

Impacts Of B2c E-Commerce On Hospital Productivity: An Empirical Study, Shin-Yuan Hung, Hsin-Min Hung, Mu-Yin Hung

Journal of International Information Management

This work conducted a comprehensive study of Business-to-Consumer Electronic Commerce (B2C e-Commerce) applications in Taiwanese hospitals. To further assess the impacts of B2C e-Commerce on hospital productivity, this study also employed three quantitative methods to analyze historical data. The results confirm those of broader research into applications of B2C e-Commerce to hospitals. Additionally, the results of the quantitative analysis demonstrate that B2C e-Commerce significantly impacts the hospital productivity.

Website quality has been given much attention as of late. In particular the factors that impact a consumer's perception of website quality is of great interest. This paper takes a currently validated measure of business-to-consumer website quality (WebQual™) and applies it to Chinese Web users in order to study the cross-cultural differences and similarities of U.S. and Chinese customers. Several cultural differences between U.S. and Chinese customers are revealed.

Best Practices And Web Practices: Comparing Corporate Supplier Diversity Programs With Web-Based Jminority Supplier Content, Dale Young

The growing use of the Web for business-to-business transactions means corporate Web sites could be used to communicate with diverse suppliers. This study compares the Web-based supplier diversity content on Fortune 500 public sites with the content of off-line minority supplier programs. Web sites are underused for communicating with diverse suppliers, as the content appears on only 12.5% of the sites. They emphasize information publishing because the most common Web-based supplier diversity items are contact information, such as a title and name, and third-party certification. Web-based supplier diversity content, however, is very similar to off-line diversity program content.

Non-Response Error Within Internet Surveys: A Cautionary Note, Carl S. Bozman, Donald E. Stem Jr

The use of the internet as a method to conduct survey research has expanded rapidly over the past decade. High speeds of response and lower expenses have driven this rapid growth. Relatively low response rates, however, suggest online surveys may be compromised by high levels of non-sampling error. This paper examines a major component of non-sampling error and the consequences that may be associated with internet survey non-response. Known population parameters are compared to point estimates from a census as well as a random sample of non-respondents in order to provide insight on the magnitude and direction of nonresponse error. …

Top management support has long been conceivable as an important factor for the success of IS projects. Due to the hierarchical nature of an organization, a cross-level interaction can occur among nested levels. Thus, using inappropriate statistical analysis can cause misleading results and lost of information. This study provides two contributions to the IS research. First, Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) was used to explain the cross-level interaction between organizational level and industry level. As we move on from the financial scandals of the early 2000s, the question of how to prevent the next Enron continues to be a pressing one. This Article focuses on the law’s deeply conflicted treatment of auditors of public corporations. Though the audit firm is charged with serving as the public’s watchdog in insuring good financial disclosure, the auditor’s actual client is the audited corporation itself, whose interests concerning disclosure are not necessarily aligned with those of investors. This article presents a broad view of systems analysis and design (SA&D) research. Although SA&D is a critical area of research in the information systems field, relatively little such research has been published in leading IS journals. To point toward increased research opportunities for SA&D work, this article presents a framework that illustrates the broad range of activities within the SA&D area. This framework contrasts with narrower views that consider SA&D to be concerned primarily with software development. The framework positions SA&D activities in a two-dimensional space. In 2001, Enron was forced to file bankruptcy due to fraudulent accounting practices (Enron). In 2003, the CEO of HealthSouth was charged with $1.4 billion in accounting fraud (SEC). In 2002, the SEC filed charges against former senior executives of Rite Aid for many fraudulent accounting practices including overstating net income by $1.6 billion (SEC).

This study uses structural equation modeling to investigate the influence of management control systems (i.e., quality goal, quality feedback, and quality incentives) on quality performance, the influence of quality performance on both financial performance and customer satisfaction, and the impact of customer satisfaction on financial performance at the business unit level. Overall the results indicate substantial support for our proposed theoretical framework. However, the direct relationship between customer satisfaction and financial performance was insignificant. Further analyses indicate that quality performance mediates the relationship between management control systems and financial performance and customer satisfaction. This study reports on the use of outdoor experiential training as a methodology for accelerating the group citizenship and leadership behaviors of undergraduate students. Using the emotional intelligence foundational skills of interpersonal competence and intrapersonal insight as a frame of reference for skill acquisition and measurement, it outlines the results of a self-assessment instrument and a small group problem solving exercise. Students reported a significant increase in group citizenship skills and the problem solving exercise indicated behavioral manifestations of these skills. This research investigated the relationship between the leader's perception of their power base and the follower's perception of the leader's power base. Two research questions focused the research. Leaders attempt to influence follower behavior (Weber, 1947; Lewin, 1951; Dahl, 1957). Hersey (1969) suggests that leadership equals influence. Furthermore, leadership is closely related to the concept of power (Stodgill, 19 74). Yukl (1989) concluded that French and Raven's work (1959) enjoyed wide acceptance in trying to define the type of leadership. Presence Of Informed Trading In Options Markets: An Experiment Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Rafiqul Bhuyan, Mohammad Robbani, Yuxing Van

Using Monte Carlo Simulation we show that informed trading take place in the options market. Our results indicate that at-the-money option contracts are less likely to be information based trades. Using Black-Scholes model to evaluate call and put options, we find that with positive and negative information shocks, informed investors are better off trading out-of-the-money and/or in-the-money-options. This is clear evidence that investors with inside or superior information would take advantage of options' leverage effect, Black (1975). Our analysis sheds light on the direction to revisit the models proposed by Easley et al (1998) and Chan et al (2002). We …

Managerial leadership is difficult to comprehensively define. A holistic understanding of managerial leadership is best obtained through examining and integrating multiple models. Four leadership models are reviewed from a historical, definitional, and applicatory perspective. The four models include three well-known, heavily researched theories (situational, transformational, and path-goal) and one relative newcomer (grass roots). Each model provides significant insights into the nature of true leadership, and the combination of these four models provides a holistic overview of leadership. After reviewing each model, the paper addresses points of convergence and divergence in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of managerial leadership.

Denying the consent to be governed: Risk leadership theory takes a radical approach to leadership change, and organizational improvement. It departs from the traditional and contemporary views of leadership where the leader/power figures serve as the change agents for their organizations. The increasing use of electronic monitoring has resulted in considerable debate among the public, labor groups, business groups, and increasingly among academicians. However, electronic monitoring research to date has been lacking and contradictory. This paper applies organizational behavior modification theories to argue that, when properly implemented, electronic monitoring can be an effective motivational tool. Organizational decisions regarding purpose and disclosure of monitoring, feedback source and monitoring related standards are theorized to affect the relationship between monitoring and employee motivation.
