Digital libraries deliver personalized knowledge directly to their users, without being restricted to the contents of a physical library. In a digital library information from any online source can be managed and shared, making more knowledge available to users than before. The information sharing is achieved by integrating many autonomous heterogeneous systems available. The challenge is to provide users with the ability to transparently access digital library contents in spite of the heterogeneity among the information sources.

The article focuses on managing word of mouth of organizational success. Word of mouth is based heavily on informal conversations and storytelling. It is the perfect example of a situation in which the command-and-control approach cannot be used. The article states that managing positive word of mouth is not about control but about collaboration and managing influence. It begins by building trust at every level possible in the organization, ensuring congruence between what is said and what is done, being consistent and reliable, developing ways to involve social network leaders in positive personal experiences with organizations.

Technology translation can be achieved through the blending of the sciences and arts in the form of digital imagery. Digital animation and video can be utilized to portray molecular events where the mechanism of action is known but the process occurs at a sub-microscopic level. There needs to be a strong collaboration between scientific advisors and digital artists when creating the animation such that the artistic interpretation of the molecular event conforms to the known and accepted confines of science. The Implied Jump Risk Of Libor Rates, Lim Kian Guan, Christopher Ting, Mitch Warachka

Business Faculty Articles and Research

This paper examines implied parameters from options on LIBOR futures. Jump-diffusion models are found to offer superior in-sample and out-of-sample performance when compared to their pure diffusion counterpart. The need to incorporate stochastic jump magnitudes into LIBOR dynamics is also documented. In addition, empirical evidence reveals that the jump component in LIBOR rates is important for pricing their derivatives. Furthermore, variation in jump risk often coincides with Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) decisions and a small subset of macroeconomic announcements.

As the calendar turns over from 2004 to 2005 we are back where we were a year ago with the BCS. Once again the "C" has been removed. At the end of the regular season there were five undefeated college football teams. In the meticulously constructed world of the BCS only two of those five teams played each other in bowl games negating the claim of a national championship although there certainly is a BCS champion.

Meese-Rogoff Redux: Micro-Based Exchange Rate Forecasting, Martin D. Evans, Richard K. Lyons

CRIF Seminar series

This paper compares the true, ex-ante forecasting performance of a micro-based model against both a standard macro model and a random walk. In contrast to existing literature, which is focused on longer horizon forecasting, we examine forecasting over horizons from one day to one month (the one-month horizon being where micro and macro analysis begin to overlap). Over our 3-year forecasting sample, we find that the micro-based model consistently out-performs both the random walk and the macro model. Micro-based forecasts account for almost 16 per cent of the sample variance in monthly spot rate changes. These results provide a level …

This research recognizes the importance of the founding conditions of a firm. A new construct, Founding Time (FT) has been conceptualized, measured, and validated to represent one of the founding conditions of a firm. FT is then used to understand the phenomena of growth of firms.

The impact of FT on the growth of a firm has been examined. This examination reveals that there is a certain zone of FT, which seems to result in high firm growth rates. This research also establishes that there is an optimum for the FT of a firm.

This paper provides an explanation of the continued persistence of the weekend effect. Using the 23 non-holiday Wednesday closings of 1968 as a benchmark, it is postulated that negative Monday returns can be explained by risk averse investors reacting to the arrival of new information.

Software development typically involves a large capital outlay for an asset with a highly uncertain useful life. A reduction in the degree of uncertainty is likely to have a significant impact upon the expected value of an application. One method for reducing uncertainty is to incorporate modularity (e.g. a portability layer) when the application is first developed. The inclusion of such a layer involves an additional development cost. Using a real options approach we estimate the value of the flexibility that such portability confers. This study examines the background as well as the ideological foundations underpinning the Cuba-Venezuela alliance. Castro and Chavez are now trying to consolidate a new political axis in Latin America, funded by Chavez’ oil diplomacy. Similarities with the Cuban experiment are highlighted, as well as Castro’s collaboration with the leadership of the Movimiento Revolucionario Bolivariano-MBR 200. The various dimensions of the cooperation between Venezuela and Cuba are explored, with emphasis on its political objectives and impact on each country. Item generation has received only cursory attention in the research literature, despite the fact that it seems obvious that poorly written items will result in poor psychometric properties of measures. In this paper, we review the literature on item generation, develop a typology of threats to construct validity, and evaluate five commonly used
organizational research measures with respect to typology. Our results demonstrate that the sampled measures have significant problems that may represent threats to construct validity. recommendations for improved item generation practice are offered.
