Ad Hoc Teams: Do Students Actually Learn From Them?, Chi Lim, Terry Coalter

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Today’s organizations expect new college graduates to be well equipped to excel in team settings. Although instructors have good intentions, more often than not, students are ill-prepared to lean from their team experience. Little attention has been given to the ad hoc method of population team projects in business courses without properly training students to function in teams. The current study utilized team requirements in business classes to understand what students can gain from team projects when they undertake team projects without training.

What Constitutes An Effective Human Resources Curriculum?, Michael Sincoff, Crystal Owen

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

What constitutes an effective university curriculum in human resources management? In an effort to answer this question, the authors reviewed the research literature on human resources curricula, comparing, contrasting and synthesizing the recommendations that have been offered in recent studies. Although a number of scholars have addressed this issue from a variety of perspectives and offer many noteworthy points for consideration, the review of the research literature indicates that a definitive answer to the question of curriculum content has not yet been found. The authors summarize the recent research, categorizing studies in terms of type pf research (empirical versus conceptual), …

The Prospect Of Personalized Education Guided By Student Genetic Information, David Parmenter Jan 2005

The Prospect Of Personalized Education Guided By Student Genetic Information, David Parmenter

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Genetics-related research is rapidly developing increased understanding of the genes that underlie most human as well as the molecular processes in which these genes take part. It is reasonable for educators to assume that many learning-related traits will he found to have a genetic basis and that genetic testing will someday allow educators to access this learning-related information for each student. Knowledge of learning preferences would enable advisors, instructors and the students themselves to more closely match student needs with the appropriate educational environments and teaching methods. At the extreme, this information could make possible truly personalized education.

Outsourcing The Human Resource Function: Environmental And Organizational Characteristics That Affect Hr Performance, J. D. Lilly, D. A. Gray, Meghna Virick

Faculty Publications

A theoretical model is presented that identifies environmental and organizational characteristics that affect human resource (HR) performance in an organization. Specifically, we address the issue of when and under what circumstances does HR outsourcing contribute value to the firm by attempting to identify environmental and organizational characteristics that affect HR department performance and how HR outsourcing mediates that relationship. We propose that supplier competition in the HR provider market has a direct effect on the amount of HR outsourcing which in turn has a direct effect on HR performance. Environmental uncertainty (primary, competitive, and supplier) is proposed to moderate the …

Value As A Measure Of Tourism Performance In The Era Of Globalization Conceptual Considerations And Empirical Findings, Robertico Croes Jan 2005

Value As A Measure Of Tourism Performance In The Era Of Globalization Conceptual Considerations And Empirical Findings, Robertico Croes

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In general, both the World Tourism Organization (WTO) and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) consider the trends of tourist arrivals and receipts as indicators in comparing the performance of destinations and regions. These considerations are based on the annual average percentage change in arrivals and receipts and a comparison that is made across time. This methodology is incomplete, however, particularly in light of the new exigencies of globalization. The study proposes an alternative approach based on the concept of value. Value is founded on the premises of microeconomics, and it provides more reliable and effective information to improve …

Entrepreneurial Hunger—Shall We Try Chinese?, Joseph E. Levangie Jan 2005

Entrepreneurial Hunger—Shall We Try Chinese?, Joseph E. Levangie

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Many entrepreneurs are able to manage their businesses within relatively contained and familiar geographical and cultural circles. With a world economy shrinking every day amid a flood of digital information, today’s entrepreneur is increasingly confronted with opportunities to consider new ways to secure vendors and recruit customers. Many unfamiliar possibilities emerge. Should the entrepreneur venture beyond “comfortable” surroundings to consider international connections? Specifically, what about China? How practical is this fetching business temptation of larger markets and lower-cost subcontractors? What are the social, trade, financial, and political issues? Should a “China strategy” be a true entrepreneurial offensive, or rather a …

Using Action Research To Determine And Resolve Team Issues For Courseware Developers, Manley G. Morgan

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

A department consisting of four teams of courseware developers and instructors had been experiencing a lack of team cohesiveness as evidenced by the exclusion of individuals and unwillingness to support group goals. Using action research, a collaborative team was formed and data collected using surveys, interviews and observations. The results of the data were fed back to the collaborative team for data analysis. A week long team training session was held that provided for interpretation and clarification of courseware editing procedures. Team structure and location were also modified to allow for closer communications with the customer/supplier.

Firm Performance And Insider Trading: A Comparison Between Voluntary And Involuntary Bankruptcy Filings, Jeffrey Donaldson, Robert Weigand Jan 2005

Firm Performance And Insider Trading: A Comparison Between Voluntary And Involuntary Bankruptcy Filings, Jeffrey Donaldson, Robert Weigand

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

We compare the financial performance and insider trading characteristics of firms finding for voluntary bankruptcy with firms that are petitioned into bankruptcy involuntarily by their creditors. We find that shareholders of firms filing for voluntary bankruptcy experience significantly greater losses around the bankruptcy announcement than shareholders of involuntary filers. We also find that insiders of firms filing voluntarily are net sellers of their firm's shares in the years leading up to bankruptcy, vs. net buying by insiders of involuntary filers. Moreover, firms filing voluntary bankruptcy successfully reorganize less frequently and liquidate more frequently titan firms that file involuntary bankruptcy. These …

Independent Auditor's Opinions Of Substantial Doubt: A Sox-2002 Markets Efficiency Evaluation, Jeff Grover Jan 2005

Independent Auditor's Opinions Of Substantial Doubt: A Sox-2002 Markets Efficiency Evaluation, Jeff Grover

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This study determined that cumulative abnormal stock returns of an auditor portfolio of firms with substantial doubt were positive but non-significant for a 23-event week period following the release of independent auditor opinions but transitioned to positive and significant for the remainder of the 35-event week window. The non-significant period supports the semi-strong form of the efficient markets hypothesis (EMH), which suggests that these opinions were quickly and efficiently absorbed by the firms' market value. The significant period anomaly violates the EMH and may suggest a lagged market response to an optimistic outlook of the market value of the auditor …

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This study used meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between leadership style and job performance in sales settings. Intellectual Property Asset Management: A New Dimension For Business Leadership, Francine Segars, Karen Moustafa Jan 2005

Intellectual Property Asset Management: A New Dimension For Business Leadership, Francine Segars, Karen Moustafa

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

As we move rapidly toward a knowledge society, intellectual property (used interchangeably hereinafter with "IP") is becoming the primary differentiating factor between companies (Drucker, 199 2). In the knowledge society, the means for production becomes intellectual property which is held within each individual employee within a company, along with a well thought out strategy for managing a company's IP. Leadership is required to ensure that this IP intellectual property is fully utilized by the company through an effective strategy. Leadership has been defined as the ability of an individual to use influence to produce an outcome (Bennis & Nanus, 1985; …

An Exploratory Investigation Into The Moderating Effect Of Emotional Intelligence On The Emotional Labor And Burnout Relationship, Wesley Scroggins, Suzanne Ray, Elizabeth Rozell

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Emotional intelligence has received increased attention in recent years. Much of this attention is due to research that supports a direct relationship between emotional intelligence and positive organizational behaviors. However, little research has investigated the moderating effects of emotional intelligence. This paper addresses this gap in the literature by investigating the moderating effect of emotional intelligence tilt the emotional labor and burnout relationship. Results support significant direct relationships of both emotional labor and emotional intelligence on burnout. The self-awareness dimension of emotional intelligence also moderated the emotional labor and burnout relationship. Implications f or research and practice are discussed.

Student Perceptions Of Effective Visual Aid Usage, Reginald Bell, Rahim Quazi

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

This study investigates whether significant differences exist across college undergraduates’ grade levels, majors, gender, age levels, and income levels regarding their perceptions of visual aid usage in effective perceptions. These differences were measured by subjecting 226 college undergraduates at a medium sized state university to a Visual Aid Usage Presentation Survey (VAUPS). Principal component factor analysis was performed on collected data, which revealed significant differences in students' perceptions across declared majors and college grade levels on factors. These results suggest that business professors should present visual information according to differing perceptions of effectiveness across majors and grade levels.

Leader Development And Emotional Competence: Authentic Leadership, Self-Awareness, And Personal Integrity, Nathan Keller, James Quick, Marilyn Macik-Frey, David Gray, David Mack, Cary Cooper

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Can leadership be taught? (Doh, 2003) The dramatic growth of leadership academies, institutes, and programs from political science to business and psychology to reserve officer training corps for U.S. military services makes this a compelling question. We say "yes" and then: How can it be taught? And how are leaders developed? Ours is a developmental theory for teaching leaders and suggests that emotional competence is at the heart of developing authentic leaders with personal integrity.

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations contains many of the basic tenets of capitalism Less well known is Smith's discussion of the state of education in the late eighteenth century in the latter chapters of the Wealth of Nations. Smith offers a detailed examination of professorial and administrative motivations of his day. Smith's analysis has direct application to many of the same problems that educational critics today have identified. This paper presents Smith's observations in the context of the controversies identified in today's educational reform movement.

Evolution Of The Cash Flow Statement Through 2003, Rita Jones, Keith Atkinson Jan 2005

Evolution Of The Cash Flow Statement Through 2003, Rita Jones, Keith Atkinson

Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)

Cash flows of a business are the most fundamental events upon which accounting measurements are based and upon which investors and creditors are assumed to base their decisions. Then why did the FASB wait until November 1987 to issue a standard "requiring" businesses to provide a Statement of Cash Flows, and what subsequent changes have been made to the standard? Possibilities of the delay include: (1) fear of regressing from accrual accounting emphasis to a cash emphasis: (2) the area of cash flows was not perceived to be "urgent " enough to warrant the attention of the standard-setting bodies forced …
