The Profit Impact Of A Strategic Approach To Web Enhanced Services (Wes)—A Study Of The Motor Carrier Industry, Gregory M. Kellar, John Xiaoqun Zhang

An increasing number of motor carriers offer web-enhanced services (WES) such as real-timetracking-and-tracing, on-line ordering, and conflict resolution. However, the burst of the Internet bubble raised questions as to whether investments in such Internet-related services increase corporate profitability (e.g., Nagarajan et al., 2000). This article studies financial and operational values that web-enhanced services add to publicly traded interstate trucking companies. Large companies offering WES were found to be more profitable than smaller companies in general, and they were more profitable than other large carriers not offering WES. Investments in WES appear to provide a strategic advantage specifically for large companies.

Using a sample of recent retirees, the study described here sought to test the general propositions of the Wanberg, Watt, and Rumsey (1996) model by (a) including specific variables that are likely to be relevant to older adults seeking work after retirement (bridge employment) and (b) integrating more recent variable groups (e.g., situational constraints) suggested by recent research (e.g., Wanberg, Kanfer, & Rotundo (1999) and Kanfer, Wanberg, & Kantrowitz (2001). We investigate the demand for new finance Ph.D.s from 1989 to 2001. Three categories of schools (Top 20, Top 21-50, and Other Finance Departments) are explored and the differences between private and public institutions are reported. The demand for assistant professors is the greatest and most institutions require an earned Ph.D. While most do not specify the position type, there is some evidence that tenure-tracked ones are on the rise. The most desired areas of expertise are corporate/business finance, investments, and bank management/financial markets and institutions. The total demand is positively related to the Gross Domestic Product and Dow Jones.

This study demonstrates how the subordinate’s defensiveness predicts perception of managerial behaviors, which in turn leads to trust in supervisors. From a social information processing perspective, defensiveness, the affective reaction to uncertainty and vulnerability, serves as the frame subordinates use to decode and evaluate managerial behaviors.
