Success To The Successful: The Use Of Systems Thinking Tools In Teaching Ob, E. Anne Bardoel, Tim Haslett Sep 2004

Success To The Successful: The Use Of Systems Thinking Tools In Teaching Ob, E. Anne Bardoel, Tim Haslett

Organization Management Journal

This paper discusses the use of an experiential pedagogy based on two systems thinking tools that can be incorporated in the teaching of organizational behavior (OB) concepts and case studies. It is contended that combining causal loop diagramming techniques and the application of Senge’s archetypes provides useful tools in assisting students to understand interdependencies, difficulties of implementation, impacts of assumptions, and provide further insights into OB concepts. This paper demonstrates the insights that thesecsystems thinking tools can provide by using the “Success to the successful" archetype as an example.

Membership On Editorial Boards And Rankings Of Schools With International Business Orientation, Kam C. Chan, Hung-Gay Fung Dr., Pikki Lai Sep 2004

Membership On Editorial Boards And Rankings Of Schools With International Business Orientation, Kam C. Chan, Hung-Gay Fung Dr., Pikki Lai

GFCB Working Paper Series

Using four-year data (1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002), we have provided a ranking of schools with international business (IB) orientation based on the membership on editorial boards of 30 leading international business journals. Participation on editorial boards of quality journals is highly selective, and should provide a quality indication of the schools. Both quality unadjusted and adjusted board membership based ranking are calculated in this study. Several interesting findings are worth noting. First, U.S. schools play a significant leadership role among the leading IB programs. Second, the findings of this study also show the major contribution of non-U.S. schools, which …

Complexity Theory As A Practical Management Tool: A Critical Evaluation, Aaron C.T. Smith Sep 2004

Complexity Theory As A Practical Management Tool: A Critical Evaluation, Aaron C.T. Smith

Organization Management Journal

Complexity theory is receiving increasing attention in both academic and popular literature as a potential management tool. As momentum gathers surrounding its popularity in practical management, complexity theory is poised to become a management ‘fad’, and potentially an influential paradigm for the future. However, much of the literature concerning complexity theory contains inconsistent terminology and a lack of operationally empirical definitions. This has made it difficult for researchers to specify empirical questions in order to frame complexity research, and for practitioners to acquire the key principles for implementation. It has also opened a Pandora’s Box of commentaries which proclaim that …

An Investigation Into The Absence Of Disabled People From Commercial Advertising And Its Impact On The Disabling Experience, Mary-Ann O'Donovan Sep 2004

An Investigation Into The Absence Of Disabled People From Commercial Advertising And Its Impact On The Disabling Experience, Mary-Ann O'Donovan

Masters

Much research has been conducted into the effects of advertising on various minority groups – women, gay people, black people, unemployed youths. However, research regarding the relationship of mainstream advertising and disable people is sparse. Disable people are one of the largest minority groups in the world and yet, they are almost invisible within advertising and consumer research, and within advertising itself. It is this lack of representation in commercial advertising that interests the researcher. Disabled people have historically been excluded from many facets of society- education, employment, leisure – with advertising viewed as one more mechanism to further this …

Towards A Conceptual Framework Of Electronic Purchasing Consortia, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth Sep 2004

Towards A Conceptual Framework Of Electronic Purchasing Consortia, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Conference papers

In supply chain management literature, there has been little empirical research on consortium
purchasing focusing on a detailed analysis of information and communication (ICT) based
procurement strategies. Based on the exploration of academic literature and two surveys among
purchasing organisations as well as e-Marketplaces / procurement service providers (PSPs) in the
automotive and electronics industry sectors, the research methodology assesses the overall
statement: ‘Effective participation in electronic purchasing consortia (EPC) has the potential to
enhance competitive advantage. Implementation requires a clear and detailed understanding of the
major process structures and drivers, based upon the technology-organisation-environment
framework’. Key factors and structures …

Engaging In Excellence Through Academic Service-Learning: A Way To Teach And Learn Citizenship And Justice In Any College Course, Susan R. Madsen Sep 2004

Engaging In Excellence Through Academic Service-Learning: A Way To Teach And Learn Citizenship And Justice In Any College Course, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Academic service-learning is a relatively new pedagogy that is now being used in college and university courses across the country. In a 1995 speech by D. M. Shafer, it was cited as a "means of responding to concerns about the loss of a sense of community and concurrent citizenship behaviors in the country" (Easterling & Rudell, 1997, p. 59). Although some would purport that the trend toward decreased civic engagement among the teens and young adults of today is unique, Dewey (1938) had these similar concerns nearly seven decades ago. He explained:

The society is a number of people held …

A Comparison Of Implementation Issues And Strategies For Radio Frequency Identification Technologies Between The U.S. Military And Private Sector Organizations, Kristine M. O'Brien, Stephen M. Swartz Sep 2004

A Comparison Of Implementation Issues And Strategies For Radio Frequency Identification Technologies Between The U.S. Military And Private Sector Organizations, Kristine M. O'Brien, Stephen M. Swartz

Journal of Transportation Management

The purpose of this research was to study the implementation of radio frequency identification (RFID) technologies used to track equipment and supplies. Current implementation issues and strategies for future use were collected from leading edge organizations from the military and private sector. A formal comparison found both similarities and differences between how industry and the Army are implementing and using RFID technologies in their supply chains and logistics networks. This article focuses on these similarities and differences, to include a gap between the Army and industry regarding RFID tag use and implementation, and a difference in the overall focus of …
