Corporate And Individual Influences On Managers' Social Orientation, Joachim W. Marz, Thomas L. Powers, Thomas Queisser

WCBT Faculty Publications

This paper reports research on the influence of corporate and individual characteristics on managers' social orientation in Germany. The results indicate that mid-level managers expressed a significantly lower social orientation than low-level managers, and that job activity did not impact social orientation. Female respondents expressed a higher social orientation than male respondents. No impact of the political system origin (former East Germany versus former West Germany) on social orientation was shown. Overall, corporate position had a significantly higher impact on social orientation than did the characteristics of the individuals surveyed.

A Real-Time Data Set For Macroeconomists: Does The Data Vintage Matter?, Dean D. Croushore, Tom Stark

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper uses a real-time data set to analyze data revisions and to test the robustness of published econometric results. The data set consists of vintages, or snapshots, of the major macroeconomic data available at quarterly intervals in real time. The paper illustrates why such data may matter, examines the properties of several of the variables in the data set across vintages, and examines key empirical papers in macroeconomics, investigating their robustness to different vintages.

The Utilization Of Perceived Needs Importance In Explaining And Predicting Responsiveness To Organizational Inducements, Melissa N. Castillo

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The concern over attraction and retention strategies in organizations has been widely acknowledged through the voluminous amount of research. As functions of human resources management (HRM), the emphasis in utilizing effective attraction and retention strategies cannot be ignored due to their importance to the firm's overall performance. In meeting this concern, inducements have been recently mentioned to be the missing link in providing more effective recruitment and retention strategies. Inducements are deliberate modifications of a job characteristic or the work environment, including benefits for the sole purpose of enhancing the attractiveness of a job to potential applicants and maintaining that …

It Competency And Firm Performance: Is Organizational Learning A Missing Link?, Michael J. Tippins, Ravipreet S. Sohi Aug 2003

It Competency And Firm Performance: Is Organizational Learning A Missing Link?, Michael J. Tippins, Ravipreet S. Sohi

Department of Marketing: Faculty Publications

Many companies have developed strategies that include investing heavily in information technology (IT) in order to enhance their performance. Yet, this investment pays off for some companies but not others. This study proposes that organization teaming plays a significant role in determining the outcomes of IT. Drawing from resource theory and IT literature, the authors develop the concept of IT competency. Using structural equations modeling with data collected from managers in 271 manufacturing firms, they show that organizational learning plays a significant role in mediating the effects of IT competency on firm performance.

Helping Cob Students Use Their Business Degree To Get Into Law School, Jon Jeffery Carlston Aug 2003

Helping Cob Students Use Their Business Degree To Get Into Law School, Jon Jeffery Carlston

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Getting into law school these days has become ultra-competitive. GPA's and LSAT scores that worked just a few years ago will not get a law school applicant into the same schools they will today. The economy as well as the attractiveness of a law degree (J.D.) have lead to record increases in the number of students applying for law school. Law schools have been forced to "raise the bar" in order to deal with the demand. Because this is the case, undergraduate students must find ways to distinguish themselves among applicants, stay on top of the application process, and achieve …

Antecedents Of Consumer Trust In B-To-C Electronic Commerce, Dan J. Kim, Donald L. Ferrin, H. Raghav Rao

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Despite the importance of trust in electronic commerce, there is insufficient theory and evidence concerning the determinants of consumer trust about an Internet vendor’s trustworthiness, and the influence of consumer trust on the consumer’s purchasing intention. The purpose of this study is to: i) develop a theoretical framework identifying the antecedents of a consumer’s trust and purchase intention, ii) test the proposed model using Structural Equation Modeling, analyzing Internet consumer behavior data collected via a Web survey, and iii) provide theoretical and managerial implications. The results of the study show that consumers’ disposition to trust, privacy protection, security protection, consumers’ …

Operationalizing Technology Improvements In Product Development Decision-Making, Shantanu Bhattacharya, V. Krishnan, Vijay Mahajan Aug 2003

Operationalizing Technology Improvements In Product Development Decision-Making, Shantanu Bhattacharya, V. Krishnan, Vijay Mahajan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Achieving competitive advantage and price premiums in many technology-based markets requires the incorporation of current technology in new products. To do so, firms in hyper-competitive environments increasingly plan and design their products concurrent with the independent development and validation of underlying technologies. Simultaneous validation of a core technology has important implications for a company's product positioning and launch sequence decisions making these traditional marketing decisions relevant to operations managers. Prior research has shown that to minimize cannibalization in the absence of such improvements in technology, a firm should not launch low-end products before high-end products. However, concurrent evolution of technology …

Broadcast Scheduling For Mobile Advertising, Bert De Reyck, Zeger Degraeve Aug 2003

Broadcast Scheduling For Mobile Advertising, Bert De Reyck, Zeger Degraeve

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We describe a broadcast scheduling system developed for a precision marketing firm specialized in location-sensitive permission-based mobile advertising using SMS (Short Message Service) text messaging. Text messages containing advertisements were sent to registered customers when they were shopping in one of two shopping centers in the vicinity of London. The ads typically contained a limited-time promotional offer. The company's problem was deciding which ads to send out to which customers at what particular time, given a limited capacity of broadcast time slots, while maximizing customer response and revenues from retailers paying for each ad broadcast. We solved the problem using …

Factors Influencing The Adoption Of E-Marketplaces By Small Organizations: An Empirical Investigation, Xin Tan, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah, Charalambos Iacovou, Jaekyung. Kim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The emergence of mobile computing combined with the increased popularity of the Internet is changing our daily lives. The increasing use of small portable computers, wireless networks and satellites un folds the new technology of mobile computing, which allows transmis sion of data to computers that are not physically linked to a network. As a result, people can communicate on the move. Mobile devices with new input and output methods and form factors are dramatically different from traditional desktop computers (Rodden et al., 1998). These technological changes make increasing demands on both the quality of user interface and the functionality …

A Study On Tolerable Waiting Time: How Long Are Web Users Willing To Wait?, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The WWW has become an important channel for information access, electronic commerce, and publication. With an exponential increase in the number of Web users and the popularity of multimedia technology, users often face a long waiting time for downloading Web pages. Although various technologies and techniques have been implemented to alleviate the situation and to comfort the impatient users, little research has been done to assess what constitutes an acceptable and tolerable waiting time for Web users. This research reviews the literature on computer response time and users’ waiting time, and assesses Web users’ tolerable waiting time in information retrieval. …

Dairy Policy And Price Volatility, Charles F. Nicholson, Thomas Fiddaman Jul 2003

Dairy Policy And Price Volatility, Charles F. Nicholson, Thomas Fiddaman

Agribusiness

The US dairy industry is shaped by a patchwork of regulations accumulated over a long history of intervention to achieve various, sometimes conflicting, policy goals. Price supports have long been a central feature of dairy markets, but were largely withdrawn beginning in 1988. Since that time, there has been a dramatic increase in the variability of farm milk and milk product prices. The origins and desirability of volatility has been the subject of much debate; unfortunately models in existence to date have shed little light on the question due to their adoption of essentially non-dynamic methods. This article introduces a …
