An Empirical Examination Of The Usefulness Of The Motley Fool's "Flow Ratio", Don E. Giacomino, Michael D. Akers

Accounting Faculty Research and Publications

An item in the Motley Fool recently caught our attention. The article “Cisco vs. Lucent: The Flow Ratio Tells All” (by Matt Richey, June 6, 2000, in The Motley Fool.fool.com), introduced a new ratio that Richey claimed to be useful for measuring the investment worthiness of a company. Since our Financial Statement Analysis course covers traditional ratio analysis and since we were exploring some research ideas on measuring liquidity, the Fool Ratio seemed worthy of investigation

New Social Movements And The Struggle For Worker’S Rights In The Maquila Industry, Victoria Carty Jan 2003

New Social Movements And The Struggle For Worker’S Rights In The Maquila Industry, Victoria Carty

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

"Campaigns to improve worker’s rights in export processing zones (EPZs), also referred to the maquila industry in Latin America, is an important topic analytically and politically. On theoretical and practical levels, the co-existence of market economies with effective means to ensure adequate working conditions for workers is a critical question. Underlying the issue is a vigorous debate regarding how the global economy should be governed; who or what should govern it, and whose interest is should serve (Faux, 2002)."

Expert Assessments Of E-Commerce In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Theoretical Model Of Infrastructure And Culture For Doing Business Using The Internet, John Chituanya Okoli Jan 2003

Expert Assessments Of E-Commerce In Sub-Saharan Africa: A Theoretical Model Of Infrastructure And Culture For Doing Business Using The Internet, John Chituanya Okoli

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In spite of numerous socioeconomic problems in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), there has been an increasing growth of Internet connectivity, and much business activity has arisen to take advantage of this technology. This dissertation investigates experts’ assessments of the pertinent factors affecting e-business in SSA from the dual perspective of national infrastructure and culture. I review the literature related to e-business in SSA and develop three conceptual models that identify various pertinent factors and hypothesize their interrelationships in determining e-business outcomes. The first model includes all the factors I identify; the second model examines those factors that operate at the national …

Career Counseling For College Students: The Influence Of A Computer-Assisted Career Decision-Making Program On The Stability Of College Major Selection At A Research-Extensive University, Mary D. Feduccia Jan 2003

Career Counseling For College Students: The Influence Of A Computer-Assisted Career Decision-Making Program On The Stability Of College Major Selection At A Research-Extensive University, Mary D. Feduccia

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to determine the influence of Career Discovery I, the first module in a computer-assisted program for career decision-making, on the stability of the choice of college majors. This study sought to determine whether any differences existed in the stability of college majors between students who entered a Research-Extensive University with undeclared majors, used Career Discovery I, and declared a major by the end of the first semester of enrollment and students who entered the same University with declared majors and did not use Career Discovery I during the investigation. In addition, the study …

An Investigation Of The Factors That Influence Electronic Information Sharing Between State And Local Agencies, Asli Yagmur Akbulut Jan 2003

An Investigation Of The Factors That Influence Electronic Information Sharing Between State And Local Agencies, Asli Yagmur Akbulut

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates the factors that influence local government participation in electronic information sharing with state agencies. Although electronic information sharing has the potential to help government agencies to increase productivity and performance, improve policy-making and provide better public services to the citizens, there is still little information available about the factors that antecede electronic information sharing between local and state agencies. Synthesizing the pertinent literature on interagency information sharing and well-established theories such as diffusion of innovations theory, critical mass theory and social exchange theory, this study proposes that local government participation in electronic information sharing with state agencies …

Evaluating The Use Of The Web By Print Firms, Greg Parry Jan 2003

Evaluating The Use Of The Web By Print Firms, Greg Parry

Research outputs pre 2011

The disruptive impact of electronic commerce on the print industry has the potential to radically transform its value proposition. The challenge for the industry is to utilise the disruptive aspects of emerging technology to offer customers greater variety in the delivery of information and communication, and take advantage of potential cost innovations to improve declining rates of return. This paper reviews these developments and reports on an exploratory study of the Australian print industry that suggests that the extent of transformation has, to date, been limited.

A Proposed Model To Evaluate The Benefits Of Government Sponsored Regional Electronic Marketplaces For Smes: Extending The Updated Delone & Mclean Is Success Model, Denise Gengatharen, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

Despite a growing body of research on the benefits of Internet-based electronic marketplaces, few evaluation models have emerged to examine them. This paper proposes a conceptual model to evaluate the benefits of a government-sponsored regional e-marketplace for small and medium enterprises (SME-REM). The updated DeLone & McLean IS Success Model is extended using data from a literature review on e-marketplaces, SME participation in e-commerce and from an ongoing case study of a government-sponsored SME-REM in Western Australia. The extended model considers a longitudinal approach and the context of the evaluation in determining the net benefits of government-sponsored SME-REMs.

Increasing The Adoption Of Electronic Commerce By Smes: Reflections From An Empirical Study, Rosemary Stockdale, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper examines the perceptions of SMEs, local business associations and government workers in four regions of Western Australia regarding the adoption of electronic commerce. It first discusses the drivers and barriers that affect SME participation in e-commerce as identified by the literature, before offering an alternative to the notion oj SMEs as a homogenous group, The authors reflect on the concerns raised in a recent empirical study and offer some conclusions and recommendations.

Market Makers' Recognition Of Key Success Factors In Electronic Marketplaces, Rosemary Stockdale, Craig Standing Jan 2003

Market Makers' Recognition Of Key Success Factors In Electronic Marketplaces, Rosemary Stockdale, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

This study examines the recognition and use of critical success factors by market makers in electronic marketplaces. A content analysis of e-marketplace websites enabled an examination of how these factors have been incorporated into marketplace sites. Evidence of market makers’ awareness of the success factors was found in all the sites although there remain questions and issues to be addressed. Awareness of the need for critical mass and privacy were very evident, but the key factors of security, technological infrastructure and neutrality were identified as areas of concern. Evidence of an awareness of the importance of trust by market makers …

Adoption Of M-Commerce: A Question Of Values?, Patricia Mcmanus, Craig Standing Jan 2003

Adoption Of M-Commerce: A Question Of Values?, Patricia Mcmanus, Craig Standing

Research outputs pre 2011

Mobile commerce is experiencing rapid growth. The underlying reasons for adoption of mobile services at the individual level are still unclear. The aim af this paper is to examine theoretical explanations for mobile adoption and to assess the significance of perceived values as an explanatory theory at the individual level. An understanding of consumers' perceived values can be useful for organisations since it has a deeper explanatory capability because it examines the intrinsic rationale in the decision making process. These can be more easily used/or predictive purposes.

A Study Of Corporate Diversification And Restructuring Activities In The 1980s And 1990s Using Multiple Measures, Mahesh N. Rajan

Faculty Publications

Using popular/common measures of diversification employed by industrial organization scholars (Jacquemin-Berry entropy measure) and strategy scholars (size of the primary business segment), this study examines the corporate diversification and restructuring activities of American firms (sample from the Fortune 250 list) in the 1980s and 1990s. There is empirical support for the widespread notion that in the 1980s and 1990s, firms underwent major restructuring efforts by divesting unrelated (unprofitable) businesses and strengthening their core business units and related segments. Additionally, the results illustrate the consistencies and discrepancies between the above measures.

Concealing And Confounding Adverse Signals: Insider Wealth-Maximizing Behavior In The Ipo Process, James S. Ang, James C. Brau Jan 2003

Concealing And Confounding Adverse Signals: Insider Wealth-Maximizing Behavior In The Ipo Process, James S. Ang, James C. Brau

Faculty Publications

We study a known negative signal, the sale of insider shares in an IPO and find that insiders adopt two concealment strategies consistent with wealth-maximizing behavior. First, insiders underreport the number of personally owned shares in the prominent original prospectus and use an obscure amendment to communicate the true higher level of shares to be offered. Second, when insiders increase shares in a later amendment, they tend to either increase secondary shares disproportional to primary share increases, or to reduce primary shares to wholly or partly conceal the increase in secondary shares offered. Insiders confound the negative secondary share signal …

Propping And Tunneling, Eric Friedman, Simon Johnson, Todd Mitton Jan 2003

Propping And Tunneling, Eric Friedman, Simon Johnson, Todd Mitton

Faculty Publications

In countries with weak legal systems, there is a great deal of tunneling by the entrepreneurs who control publicly traded firms. However, under some conditions entrepreneurs prop up their firms, i.e., they use their private funds to benefit minority shareholders. We provide evidence and a model that explains propping. In particular, we suggest that issuing debt can credibly commit an entrepreneur to propping, even though creditors can never take possession of any underlying collateral. This helps to explain why emerging markets with weak institutions sometimes grow rapidly and why they are also subject to frequent economic and financial crises. Journal …

The Relations Between Knowledge, Search Strategy, And Performance In Unaided And Aided Information Search, John A. Barrick, Brian C. Spilker Jan 2003

The Relations Between Knowledge, Search Strategy, And Performance In Unaided And Aided Information Search, John A. Barrick, Brian C. Spilker

Faculty Publications

Information search is a critical step in resolving complex issues in many different decisionmaking domains. This study examines the relations between knowledge, search strategy, and performance in both unaided and aided information search. The results of an experiment indicates that (a) task-relevant knowledge is directly related to performance in aided but not in unaided information search; (b) in unaided information search, search strategy mediates the relation between knowledge and performance; that is, knowledge indirectly affects performance through its effect on search strategy; and (c) an information search aid moderates both the relation between knowledge and search strategy and the relation …

An Empirical Model Of Price And Quality Effects Of E-Commerce, Scott E. Sampson, Kendall Hulet Jan 2003

An Empirical Model Of Price And Quality Effects Of E-Commerce, Scott E. Sampson, Kendall Hulet

Faculty Publications

During the e-Commerce boom of the late 1990s it was predicted that the Internet would have a significant impact on prices of various goods and services. Whether the net impact would he positive or negative was harder to forecast, there being opposing effects. We develop a model that describes some of those effects, including information asymmetry, search costs, price dispersion, trust premiums, and convenience premiums. The model is discussed, and a major portion is statistically tested with empirical data. As an exploratory gesture, the model is extended to consider product quality effects of online shopping. The final section concludes with …

Delayed Discharges From An Adult Intensive Care Unit (Icu), Teresa Williams Jan 2003

Delayed Discharges From An Adult Intensive Care Unit (Icu), Teresa Williams

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Introduction - Maximising efficient and effective use of resources without compromising quality of care is essential in the current healthcare climate. Intensive care unit services are one of the most resource intensive and therefore expensive services within a hospital. Because intensive care unit services comprise a significant portion of hospital costs and resources, appropriate utilisation of intensive care units is imperative. The occurrence of delayed discharges and the reason for the delays is important as they impact on the efficiency and effectiveness of intensive care unit services. Patients who no longer need intensive care unit care block beds for impending …

The Service Delivery Process : An Examination Of How Consumers Evaluate Technology-Assisted Service Encounters In The Retail Banking Industry, Catherine W. Munene

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study examined consumers' perceptions post-adoption of technology and how these perceptions affect their levels of dis/satisfaction and their continued use of technology·assisted service encounters. To this end, this study investigated the criteria that consumers in Western Australia's retail banking industry are likely to use when evaluating banking transactions involving EFTPOS, ATM, telephone, and Online banking modes. II examined whether these criteria changed with the mode of electronic banking in use and whether the significance of the criteria changed with

consumers' demographic characteristics. In addition, this study explored whether consumers who use these modes of electronic banking experience the paradoxes …

Non-Business Use Of The World Wide Web : A Study Of Selected Western Australian Organisations, Craig Valli Jan 2003

Non-Business Use Of The World Wide Web : A Study Of Selected Western Australian Organisations, Craig Valli

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Employees undertake a wide range of activities when they use the World Wide Web in the work place. Some of these activities may leave the modem Internet connected organisation vulnerable to undue or unknown risk, potential productivity losses and expense us a result of misuse or abuse or the Internet provision. Much of the existing literature on this subject points to a purported epidemic of misuse in the workplace. If this practice is so prevalent and widespread, what can modem Internet connected organisations do to identify the abuse and reduce the risks and losses that these abuses represent? To what …

Research Opportunities In Internal Auditing, Douglas F. Prawitt Jan 2003

Research Opportunities In Internal Auditing, Douglas F. Prawitt

Faculty Publications

This chapter discusses staffing and managing the internal audit function (IAF) as a component of organizational governance, and has two main purposes. First, it familiarizes interested practitioners and researchers with current trends and issues in staffing and managing the IAF. Second, it suggests questions and topics for future thinking and research among practitioners and academics. Managing and staffing an IAF is a vast and complex undertaking that remains relatively unexplored by rigorous research. The chapter contains several citations to practitioner information and academic research, but it does not attempt to include a comprehensive literature review of all relevant articles or …
