"People Just Don't Seem To Be Listening": A Case For A Functional Approach To Reputation Management, Stephen E. Gustafson

Theses

This paper focuses on the growing study of corporate reputation management and the potential benefits of focusing management attention on building, sustaining, and defending the corporate brand's reputation. Specifically, the purpose of the paper is to provide a logical justification for major corporations to add the role of chief reputation officer to their organizational structures in order to properly manage this significant intangible asset.

Secondary research of print and electronic news media coverage was conducted to document a case history of the reputation crisis and ultimate demise of Big Five accounting firm Andersen (more commonly known as Arthur Andersen). The …

The Impact Of Government Policy On Technology Transfer: An Aircraft Industry Case Study, David King, Mark L. Nowack

Management Faculty Research and Publications

This case study explores the interaction between domestic and foreign governmental policy on technology transfer with the goal of exploring the long-term impacts of technology transfer. Specifically, the impact of successive licensing of fighter aircraft manufacturing and design to Japan in the development of Japan’s aircraft industry is reviewed. Results indicate Japan has built a domestic aircraft industry through sequential learning with foreign technology transfers from the United States, and design and production on domestic fighter aircraft. This process was facilitated by governmental policies in both Japan and the United States.

Human Resources' Role In Successful Mergers And Acquisitions, Vanessa Loecke Jan 2003

Human Resources' Role In Successful Mergers And Acquisitions, Vanessa Loecke

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

In comparing the success of AOL Time Warner's merger and Hewlett-Packard Compaq's merger, it's easy to see who came out the winner. In comparing their merger strategies, including their focus on HR issues, it's also easy to see why mergers and acquisitions need to be analyzed well in advance and include due diligence, including cultural due diligence, integration planning, and analysis of HR issues, including communication and employee retention. If more companies who are considering merging with or acquiring another company would put as much time as they do money into the merger, and analyze some of the key people-related …

E-Commerce: Choosing The Appropriate Tax Model, Jeffrey A. Scudder Jan 2003

E-Commerce: Choosing The Appropriate Tax Model, Jeffrey A. Scudder

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The Internet's economic role has increased dramatically over the past decade. Along with many benefits, e-commerce has brought with it some important policy questions. One question relates to tax policy, and whether Internet transactions should be subject to sales or use taxes. This paper examines that question, considering factors such as feasibility, efficiency, fairness (virtual v. "brick-and-mortar" retailers), and legality. The relationship between ecommerce tax policy and state and local government revenues will also be addressed. Based on these factors, the evidence suggests that taxing Internet sales would be feasible, efficient, and provide revenue for important public services.

The Strategy Of Sustainability: A Systems Perspective On Environmental Initiatives, Scott Marshall, Darrell Brown Jan 2003

The Strategy Of Sustainability: A Systems Perspective On Environmental Initiatives, Scott Marshall, Darrell Brown

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

The article presents a systems perspective on environmental initiatives as they relate to the efforts of firms looking to become environmentally sustainable. To achieve environmental sustainability, firms need to implement principles, policies, and practices (such as budgeting systems, job design, recruitment and selection, and organizational structures) from the standpoint of long-term ecosystem viability. Because this process requires firms to establish challenging goals, managers are often confronted with significant conflicts between the financial and the environmental and social considerations when introducing socially or environmentally oriented decision making. The author recommends the adoption of a commonly shared corporate vision to allow for …

Perceived Fairness Of And Satisfaction With Employee Performance Appraisal, Marie Burns Walsh Jan 2003

Perceived Fairness Of And Satisfaction With Employee Performance Appraisal, Marie Burns Walsh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Employee performance appraisal is one of the most commonly used management tools in the United States. Over 90 percent of large organizations including 75 percent of state employment systems require some type of annual performance appraisal (Seldon, Ingraham & Jacobson, 2001). Performance appraisal is one of the most widely researched areas in industrial/organizational psychology (Murphy & Cleveland, 1993). However, the traditional research agenda has done little to improve the usefulness of performance appraisal as a managerial tool. Recent research has moved away from studies of rater accuracy and psychometric measures to themes of employee reactions towards performance appraisal as indicators …

The Effects Of Employee Service Quality Provision And Customer Personality Traits On Customer Participation, Satisfaction, And Repurchase Intentions, Jeannie Denise John Jan 2003

The Effects Of Employee Service Quality Provision And Customer Personality Traits On Customer Participation, Satisfaction, And Repurchase Intentions, Jeannie Denise John

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research investigates customer-employee interaction during service encounters, and whether the relationships between customer personality traits and quality of the employee’s service delivery will impact the customer’s participation, satisfaction, and repurchase intentions. Consumer personality is differentiated in terms of the self-monitoring (Snyder 1987) and locus of control (Rotter 1966) traits. Service quality provision is manipulated in terms of technical versus functional quality inputs, and whether these inputs are provided in a positive (i.e., good/superior) or negative (i.e., bad/poor) manner. These manipulations yield four combinations of service quality inputs: 1) positive technical and functional quality inputs; 2) positive technical, but negative …

From Intrapreneurship To Entrepreneurship: Is Technical Expertise Sufficient?— A Case Study, John Woodilla Jan 2003

From Intrapreneurship To Entrepreneurship: Is Technical Expertise Sufficient?— A Case Study, John Woodilla

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Following a successful career in industry, Dr. Douglas V. Shick, a newly minted entrepreneur, established NRS Associates, LLC, to perform consulting services based on two highly technical computer-modeling programs. Doug was heavily involved in the development of one program, an innovative computer simulation software for modeling a particular manufacturing process, through intrapreneurial activity during his corporate experience. Doug established his business on September 1, 2001, and on September 10 announced his services by e-mail to everyone he knew. The unforeseen events of the next day, September 11, produced some unexpected aftereffects that Doug had to factor into his developing business.

Ethical Issues In Open Source Software, Frances Grodzinsky, Keith W. Miller, Marty J. Wolf Jan 2003

Ethical Issues In Open Source Software, Frances Grodzinsky, Keith W. Miller, Marty J. Wolf

School of Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Publications

In this essay we argue that the current social and ethical structure in the Open Source Software (OSS) Community stem from its roots in academia. The individual developers experience a level of autonomy similar to that of a faculty member. Furthermore, we assert that the Open Source Software Community's social structure demands benevolent leadership. We argue that it is difficult to pass off low quality open source software as high quality software and that the Open Source development model offers strong accountability. Finally, we argue that Open Source Software introduces ethical challenges for universities and the software development community.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of planting rate on sugarcane variety trial data and interpretation. A planting rate by variety experiment was conducted at the LSU AgCenter’s Sugar Research …

Asymptotic Solutions Of Diffusion Models For Risk Reserves, Sally S. L. Shao Jan 2003

Asymptotic Solutions Of Diffusion Models For Risk Reserves, Sally S. L. Shao

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We study a family of diffusion models for risk reserves which account for the investment income earned and for the inflation experienced on claim amounts. After we defined the process of the conditional probability of ruin over finite time and imposed the appropriate boundary conditions, classical results from the theory of diffusion processes turn the stochastic differential equation to a special class of initial and boundary value problems defined by a linear diffusion equation. Armedwith asymptotic analysis and perturbation theory, we obtain the asymptotic solutions of the diffusion models (possibly degenerate) governing the conditional probability of ruin over a finite …

Reconsidering Gender And Investment In The Intrahousehold Decision-Making Process, Lin Johnson Iii Jan 2003

Reconsidering Gender And Investment In The Intrahousehold Decision-Making Process, Lin Johnson Iii

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

In the very recent past, the economics of the household and the economics of development appear to be edging toward a new convergence of concern around the nature and use of assets. However, these two literatures of economics continue to exist in separate spheres. I draw from both bodies of literature in order to examine gender differences in asset portfolios. I find systematic differences in the way that certain assets held by husbands versus wives influence household decision outcomes. A clear understanding of the nature and functions of various types of assets in hands of husbands and wives is necessary …

An emotional intelligence competency ( EIC ) survey ( the ECI-2 ) that measured eighteen competencies distributed among four cluster groups ( self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship management ) was administered to physician leaders and their supervisors, peers and direct reports. The resulting 360 degree assessment permitted a comparison of the physician leaders self assessment scores with one another and those working closely with them. In addition, independent objective and subjective measures of physician …
