The Role Of Academic/Industry Partnerships In The Development Of Supply Chain Managers, Edward Sweeney May 2002

The Role Of Academic/Industry Partnerships In The Development Of Supply Chain Managers, Edward Sweeney

Conference papers

The need for improvement in the logistics and supply chain management capability of companies in Ireland is becoming increasingly recognised. One of the main bottlenecks currently is the shortage of supply chain management professionals. Education and training has a fundamental role to play if the supply of suitably qualified human resource is to be addressed in a meaningful way. Recent research indicates that demand for people with the right knowledge and skills greatly exceed supply. There are numerous techniques and technologies which can facilitate improvement in a company’s supply chain capability. However, experience has shown that these tools alone can …

The Problem: State and Federal welfare reform programs have had the effect of increasing the size of the work force by reducing the availability of benefits available to the long-term unemployed. Coming at a time when unemployment fell to record low levels, all new entrants to the work force were greeted with a large array of opportunities. For the previously unemployed welfare recipient, the experience of moving into the work force has not been easy. Unlike better-educated new entrants into the work force, former welfare recipients have lived in a society essentially outside of the mainstream. By developing outside of …

Newtown Stationary: Getting Communities Back Into The Economic Development Game, Charles T. Moses

Today's inner cities can be places in which entrepreneurs, availing themselves of vertical and horizontal networks of business and community interests, can prosper. Government interventions such as the empowerment zone initiatives have generally not been successful in developing the indigenous entrepreneurial base in the inner city. Using the case of a single entrepreneur, this study explores alternative networking, inner city economics and the problem of failed statist policies as regards inner city economic development. It continues existing work aimed at deconstructing narratives that hold that inner cities lack effective reciprocal networks that would aid in economic development and details the …

Putting Socks On An Octopus: A Qualitative Understanding Of The Transformation To Customer Relationship Management, Patricia A. Sahm May 2002

Putting Socks On An Octopus: A Qualitative Understanding Of The Transformation To Customer Relationship Management, Patricia A. Sahm

Student Scholarship

The art of business underwent an upheaval in the last decade as new technologies met better-informed customers. One response to this new business environment can be seen in a recent repositioning from business models focused on products to ones based in customer centric actions. By the mid-1990s, this thinking led to the concept of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and to the explosive growth of CRM software and consulting services providers. After six to eight years of CRM implementations the results remain mixed with about 60-70% considered failures. What went wrong and how can it go right? Practitioners of CRM, whether …

See Jane And Samantha Lead: An Ethnography Of A Chair/Chief Executive Pair In A Nonprofit Organization, J. Bart Morrison May 2002

See Jane And Samantha Lead: An Ethnography Of A Chair/Chief Executive Pair In A Nonprofit Organization, J. Bart Morrison

Student Scholarship

This ethnography is about how nonprofit governance was achieved at one particular nonprofit agency, but it is not a how-to report or a report that explains specific factors that influence the effectiveness of nonprofit boards. Much of the conventional literature on the subject of nonprofit governance presents expert-based prescriptions of best practices. In contrast, this report is a rich description drawn from the social contruction of reality paradigm and derived from direct, intimate interaction over an extended period in a single organization. A basic narrative of the protagonists' experiences presented from their perspective provides a framework for multi-layered analysis. On …

Study Of Direct Internet Selling By Airlines In The U.S. Air Travel Distribution Industry, Sowmyan Raman May 2002

Study Of Direct Internet Selling By Airlines In The U.S. Air Travel Distribution Industry, Sowmyan Raman

Student Scholarship

The U.S. airline industry plays a very vital role in the national economy and defense. Even though the demand in this industry has been doubling every 8 to 10 years, the airline industry as a whole has seldom made any serious money during regulated or deregulated era. There is a strong downward trend in fare levels and airline yield. The downward pressure on yields makes cost reduction a major priority for all airlines. In the short and medium terms, equipment and fuel costs are beyond their control. Their inability to control the labor costs has pushed the airlines to focus …

"Like Visions In My Head: Understanding The Formulation Of Student Perceptions Of The Value Of The Liberal Arts Experience, And The Impact Of This Process On College Choice, Margaret L. Drugovich May 2002

"Like Visions In My Head: Understanding The Formulation Of Student Perceptions Of The Value Of The Liberal Arts Experience, And The Impact Of This Process On College Choice, Margaret L. Drugovich

Student Scholarship

Tuition-dependent, private postsecondary institutions need a continuous and predictable stream of students to assure their fiscal viability. Liberal arts colleges, like all postsecondary education institutions, are vying for student s in an increasingly competitive marketplace. As premium price leaders, many liberal arts institutions have been forced to make deep cuts to their 'sticker price' in the form of tuition discounts in order to compete with one another as well as with state institutions that increasingly espouse their ability to simulate the small college experience. However, discounting, though perhaps popular and even necessary, cannot be a long-term solution. According to Lovett, …

The Connected Celebrity And Nonprofit Advertising, Robert T. Wheeler May 2002

The Connected Celebrity And Nonprofit Advertising, Robert T. Wheeler

Student Scholarship

This study draws on two different inquiry methologies to explore the issue of advertising effectiveness of celebrity endorsers in a nonprofit setting. In Chapter 2 the author develops a framework that incorporates connection (congruence), source credibility, involvement, and gender as key elements in understanding the connection between celebrity endorsers and nonprofit organizations, and its impact on advertising effectiveness. In a controlled experiment the proposed model is tested using data collected in 12 sessions at two west coast universities (N=398). The results of this quantitative study support the principal model that posits a realtionship between connection, source credibility, and intention to …

The "Shop" Around The Corner: How Do Leadership Attitudes Effect An Organization? An Ethnographic Study, Barbara Clemenson May 2002

The "Shop" Around The Corner: How Do Leadership Attitudes Effect An Organization? An Ethnographic Study, Barbara Clemenson

Student Scholarship

Nonprofit leaders are frequently passionate about their organizations, many having devoted their lives and sacrificed significant material benefits for the sake of their causes. Often, though, this intense devotion unconsciously engenders an attitude of ownership towards their organizations (“This is my cause,” “I know best,” “No one else could possibly care/know/do as much as I do.”), rather than an attitude of stewardship (“We must welcome the best and all work in partnership together to address this great cause, and see that it continues addressing this need long after we are gone.”). This ethnographic study examined one nonprofit organization that espoused …

Measuring Morale In A Municipal Law Enforcement Agency: A Multidimensional Approach, Thomas J. Roth May 2002

Measuring Morale In A Municipal Law Enforcement Agency: A Multidimensional Approach, Thomas J. Roth

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations

Administrators of both public and private sector firms are charged with the effective management of their respective agencies. Effective management includes not only striving to fulfil the goals of the organization toward the external client, it includes proper management of employees, a vital resource to any organization. Likewise, police administrators are bound by duty to not only uphold the laws within their jurisdiction, they are also responsible for maintaining a desirable work environment for their employees. Because a police agency's effectiveness is largely based on the combined total of the knowledge, skill and abilities of all its individual officers, employee …

Obstacles To International Accounting Standards Convergence, Jane E. Campbell, Heather M. Hermanson, John P. Mcallister

Faculty Articles

Given the recent changes in the international sector, along with the similarities in the conceptual frameworks of the FASB and IASC, the relatively swift convergence of US GAAP and International Accounting Standards is a distinct possibility. This article contends convergence is possible, and reviews 3 key areas that could hinder or foster it: 1. the general organization, in terms of form and topical content, of the frameworks, 2. a significant pervasive difference between the frameworks, and 3. specific differences within the major topical areas of the frameworks.

The Impact Of Air Quality On The Selection Of A Home, Carol Lane

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Hedonic price method studies have assumed that individuals consider air quality as a characteristic of their homes. The purpose of this study is to determine if air quality is a significant characteristic considered when an individual decides where to live. This study uses a survey to determine where air quality ranks amongst the different characteristics of a home. My results show that air quality is significant but ranks below structural and neighborhood characteristics.

Workplace Violence: A Case Study, Robert F. White May 2002

Workplace Violence: A Case Study, Robert F. White

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This paper addresses the problem of workplace violence. Because research into workplace violence is relatively new, there is not much research into managerial response to violent incidences. This paper helps to establish a template that may become a useful managerial tool to decrease the potential for future workplace violence that may lead to loss of life and unnecessary monetary loss. Managers are not necessarily equipped to develop appropriate measures to effectively deal with violent issues. Given the proper tool, managers can often work wonders. The paper focuses on homicide in the workplace, which has been the second leading cause of …

This paper will examine variables including employee support for telecommuting, the likelihood of employees working away from the office, and the number of days employees wish to telecommute. A factor analysis was employed to determine if patterns of …

Product Schema Integration For Electronic Commerce: A Synonym Comparison Approach, Guanghao Yan, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim May 2002

Product Schema Integration For Electronic Commerce: A Synonym Comparison Approach, Guanghao Yan, Wee-Keong Ng, Ee Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In any electronic commerce system, the heterogeneity of product descriptions is a critical impediment to efficient business information exchange. In the ABECOS electronic commerce system, buyer agents, seller agents, and directory agents liaise with one another in e-commerce activities. Only when agents have a common ontology of product descriptions (also called product schemas) are they able to interact seamlessly in e-commerce activities. This gives rise to the product schema integration problem (PSI); the problem of integrating heterogeneous schemas of a certain product into one globally compatible schema. We adopt an integration approach based on product attribute synonyms. We give a …
