Here it is not even Memorial Day the traditional first marker in the baseball pennant races and the talk of a baseball strike is already in the air. What a lovely thought as spring moves on towards summer. Last week the news came that Donald Fehr and other Player's Association executives have been telling players to prepare themselves for a possible strike.

This is a study of the differing perspectives of business-oriented board members and a nonprofit CEO, providing insight into their relationships and into board governance practices. The study illuminates reasons why boards and CEOs find it difficult to fully use and leverage their joint skills. Nonprofit organizations are facing increased pressure and new challenges. They must contend with a shrinking resource base, greater competition for donor dollars and a donor market focused on the events of 9/11. Additionally, nonprofits are being asked to deliver more services, with fewer resources, to meet increased need. Adding to this mix is a generation …

As some of you will remember Kennedy was the NHL player for the Boston Bruins who revealed in late 1996 that as a young boy and then young man he was subject to repeated sexual abuse by his hockey coach Graham James.

One very controversial topic within advertising is subliminal advertising. There are many studies about the subject of subliminal messages and their effects (Trappey, 1996). This type of advertising uses subliminal stimuli, messages presented so fast or so softly or so masked by other messages that one is not aware of "seeing" or "hearing" them (Hawkins, Best, Coney, 1995). When marketers put subliminal messages in advertising, they create subliminal advertising. Subliminal advertising, therefore, involves the use of words, pictures, and shapes that are purposely inserted into advertising materials so that the viewers of the material perceive the imagery at a subconscious …

Financial Disclosure And Speculative Bubbles: An International Comparison, Benjamas Jirasakuldech, Thomas S. Zorn

This paper examines if a country’s financial disclosure system affects the likelihood of speculative bubbles. We compare stock returns of eight countries that differ in the quality of their disclosure systems as ranked by Saudagaran and Biddle (1992). We examine the hypothesis that stock prices of firms in countries with a low level of financial disclosure are more prone to speculative bubbles. We employ the duration dependence model developed by McQueen and Thorley (1994) to test for the presence of bubbles. Specifically in this paper, we are interested in understanding the differences between network composition and network strategies used by women entrepreneurs and women professionals. The focus herein is on the business/professional and social/friendship networks of successful women. Performance And Commitment Of Practitioner/Volunteer Leader Partnerships, Donald Zeilstra

A comparative case study design was used to study the effects of practitioner and volunteer leader interactions on performance and commitment in six capital fundraising campaigns of nonprofit organizations. Variation was found among the cases in the extent to which the interaction of the pairs were characterized by reciprocal relationships, and the scope and intensity of their learning orientation. As a feasibility test, the proposal that this variation would be positively associated with differences in performance and commitment was supported. As an exploratory study, insights about potential causal relationships were gained which may be tested in future research.

Intramural directors need to be proactive in this area. The benefits of intramural sports are vast, and they help many students become part of the college community.

CRIF Working Paper series

We review the history of international monies and the theory related to their adoption and use. There are four key characteristics of these currencies: high unitary value; relatively low inflation rates for long periods; issuance by major economic and trading powers; and spontaneous, as opposed to planned, adoption internationally. The economic theory of the demand for money provides support for the importance of these characteristics. The value of a unit is arbitrary for a fiat money, but the other characteristics are likely to be important for determining any fiat money that will be the international money in the future. If …

The piirpose of the present study was to examine the relationship of Job Title (Sales Manager, Salesperson) with Clothing Style (Short Skirt, Long Skirt, Pants) on perceptions of power. Seventy-eight participants completed the Perception of Power scale. The Perception of Power scale is a questionnaire that contains six measures of interpersonal power. The subscales were also added for an overall measure of power. Included with the questionnaire was a picture of a female model in one of three styles of business suit, applying for one of two jobs, for a total of six conditions. Results of 2x3 ANOVAs revealed no …
