Academy Members Visit Missions As Part Of Annual Research Conference, Academy Of Accounting Historians

Accounting Historians Notebook

On August 14, 2002, approximately twenty members of the Academy and spouses toured Missions in the San Antonio area. The tour resulted from a suggestion by Marilynn Collins and with the help of Sarah Holmes and Sandy Welch, who presented a paper on accounting records of the San Antonio Missions at the Academy Research Conference the day before. Park Historian, Dr. Rosalind Rock spoke to the group. Dr. Rock has conducted research on the Missions in archives in Mexico and Spain.

An Empirical Analysis Of Auditor Resignations, Harold Edward Davis

There were two main objectives of this study. The first objective was to develop a theoretical model that will explain auditor resignations. To meet this objective, a model was developed which was primarily grounded in prior research related to auditor resignations as well as prior research addressing auditor switching. The second objective was to estimate the model at four different quarterly dates immediately prior to an event date (i.e., the resignation date) so that the effects of time on the explanatory power of the model and each independent variable could be ascertained. Survival Analysis Of Internet Companies: An Application Of The Hazard Model, Khaled Elkhal

The purpose of this study is to develop a model that predicts failure and estimates the time of survival of dotcoms using a number of financial and non-financial factors. This model can be used as a warning tool for stockholders, creditors, and consumers to protect themselves from such failures.

I employ the Cox (1972) Proportional Hazards Model in a cross-sectional and time-varying context using financial data over the 1998–2001 period. Results from a cross-sectional analysis reveal that the coefficient estimates for variables CFTL and NSTA are consistently negative and highly significant. This suggests that higher sales and cash flows lower …

Since the onset of the digital age, organizations have been able to make use of teams of individuals distributed geographically to remain competitive. While strides have been made to understand the effectiveness of collocated teams, research has yet to sufficiently explore the effects of emerging technologies on team processes and effectiveness. A laboratory study, where dyads were asked to create a spreadsheet by following a set of explicit instructions (i.e., a psychomotor task), was conducted to manipulate the communication modalities most commonly used between collaborators (i.e., face-to-face vs. audio) and compare the effects of adding a shared workspace application. Numerous surveys have established the importance of communication skills for entry-level accountants, but none has identified the specific communication skills needed. To help us identify what skills to emphasize in an accounting curriculum, members of the Institute of Management Accounting (IMA) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) were surveyed to determine (1) the relative importance of 32 business communication skills cited in business communication literature and (2) the level of satisfaction with college preparation in those skills. The importance of integrity in business is echoed in the recent disclosures involving Enron, Worldcom, and several other major companies. Academically, the professor must always be aware of the potential for academic dishonesty from students. Academic dishonesty includes plagiarism. This paper reviews the motivations for plagiarism, the methods of detecting and preventing plagiarism, and two electronic agents that assist in plagiarism detection.

The physical structure of the Internet has entered a transition recently due to the demand for higher bandwidth worldwide. Technologies such as T1 and frame relay have been superseded by asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and digital/asymmetrical subscriber loops (DSL/ASL). Along with the new hardware technology there are improvements in software/network protocols as well. The concepts of quality of service and reservation bandwidth further enhance the efficiency of these new technologies by optimizing the use of the increased bandwidth provided.

Colleges and universities frequently require business majors to take managerial accounting. Since many non-accounting majors find accounting boring this may be one of the reasons why they may have a difficult time learning the fundamental concepts of the course. This paper describes a project I employ when teaching managerial accounting to make cost accounting interesting and relevant. One of the reasons students may have a difficult time learning managerial accounting is that traditional accounting assignments generally provide students with all of the numbers. Online lecture materials are in wide use, but their level of detail as well as level of sophistication varies greatly. Incorporating some sophisticated yet easy-to-use web features into online lecture materials makes them both more useful and more engaging. The author explains how to apply pop-ups, image swapping, and bookmarks to enliven online materials, and discusses special applications for password protection and date-triggered links.

The implementation of the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) requires major organizational change for employment and training agencies. The initiative emphasizes coordination, collaboration and communication among organizations for better service delivery. At this time, states are developing systems that will enable them to address the needs of all customers seeking employment. The Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) has conducted state case studies for two purposes: (1) to identify how states have begun the process of collaboration under the new mandates of WIA; and (2) to understand the impact on customers with disabilities.
